No. We dropped ours a couple of years ago. When we did , DH was able to use that phone number on his cell so everyone who knew our old number could still call us with no problems. Mine is an out of town number but it is the town where lots of our friends live so they can call me without having to call long distance. We have not missed our landline one little bit. As far as cost, I'm not sure. We went to Insight for our computer and television and while that is not cheap, dropping the landline helped.

We have a land line phone. All of our family lives at least 500 miles away so I do a ton of long distance calling. We also have Verizon cell phones and we have 4 of them. We have a very small plan as we dont use them very much except to call each other and that is free.

We get great cell phone reception at our house so we had our land line disconnected about a year ago. We saved about $75 a month because we had 2 different land lines in our house.

Cuthie, I am hesitant to give up our landline because there are people in my life - like your karate instructor - that I frequently need to contact who have gone all-cell, and I'm stuck driving across town to talk to them because their numbers aren't listed and I don't have their cell numbers. I also have people call me frequently whose calls I truly do need to receive who wouldn't have 'found' me but for the fact that my number was in the book. Be they people from church, people with whom I work, the parents of my children's friends.... I just find it to be a big headache to need to get hold of someone and not have a place to look up their number, or to have to call five other people to find someone who has their cell #. Half the ladies in my Bunco group have cell service only, and so when I went to make the "It's at my house!" reminder calls and got six "This number has been disconnected or is no longer in service" messages when I called the numbers that are in the book as being theirs, I wanted to throw my phone across the room. ![]() We have Tracs for cells since I don't have big cell needs. I signed up for a Tracfone users Yahoo group, and discovered ways to really get more minutes for your $. |

Yes we do - but just the basic service - no frills on the landline. But I'm hesitant to get rid of it - every time it storms really bad our cell towers are out of service. So cell phones don't work when it storms bad here.

DH and I were just discussing whether or not to get rid of our land line. Ours only averages $20/month. Although we don't get many calls on it, all of us prefer to use it to make calls when at home. It's just easier to handle and we don't have to worry about reception. I also like having a phone number that we can give out when needed. We do not give out our cell numbers to anyone outside our circle of family/friends. On a side note ~ we drove down to San Diego the other day and made a game of counting how many people were talking on their cell phones. I think we averaged every 3rd or 4th car had someone talking while driving! |

Seems to me that doing a ton of long distance calling would be more of an incentive to use your cell phone. We have a nationwide plan not just a local calling area. With the nationwide plan, there's no need for a long distance carrier. A nationwide plan would most likely be cheaper than paying for a lot of long distance. We also have unlimited mobile to mobile with Alltel customers and the Circle of Friends which includes 10 numbers that each of us can call unlimited. |

For security systems, if you rent at blockbuster ect you need a landline. we have one national calling included. Kids can call home or cell if they need me. if i have to leave the kids for a few minutes they can call me if they need something. my cell number only goes to friends and family, son is grounded from my phone after i had $58 worth of text message chages after i said my phone was not set up for those so he's not ready for a phone himself. if he goes to a dance he does take mine and I explain I can log onto theinternet and see what numbers was called from it so dont waste minutes for nothing.

| This is a question that we have been kicking around for a couple months and I have been the one that is hesitant to give up the landline. And as dorky as this sounds, it's for sentimental reasons. Twenty years ago when I was a single woman struggling to buy her first house I was having to put expenditures on a priority list. Because the local phone company in AZ would not accept my phone credit history from CA they demanded a large deposit and installation fees. I just couldn't justify the luxury of a phone when I needed things like a septic tank or propane tank. My Dad was very proud of me and wanted updates on the progress back in MI. The phone was his housewarming gift to me. We lost Dad nine years ago and the phone holds many good memories. Yeah, I know it's just a phone but I'm not ready.

We use Cheap Prepaid International Calling Cards and Discount Long Distance Phone Service - OneSuite for long distance so no huge charges there... I think that as some of you have mentioned, not having the number listed in the phone book would be a drag and yes, probably a huge hassle for others trying to reach us. Thanks for all of the replies. They are really helpful! |

where we live, the cell dont work inside and who wants to stand outside all the time! also, cell phones here dont show up your address on the 911 system and believe me, when you need to call 911, you dont want to have to take the time to give them directions! I found this out when one of my clients called 911 and had to tell them how to get to their home and if they had had a land line, the address would have shown up for the dispatcher and time would not have been wasted.

We have AT&T we just pay the bare min. Plus internet for 9.99 a month. We had Comcast, but I got tired of them raising the rates. Our DSL is just as fast as cable We can make outgoing calls but its 9 cents a min. The way I figure it. 5 cell phones can do the job. most of our calls are free on the cells.

We have a landline and I won't even consider cancelling it until cellular 911 becomes a lot more reliable. We have children (ages 4 & 7) and they know to call '911' in an emergency. With a land line, there is always a phone available (on the wall) for them to use. If I cancel the land line, they will first have to find a cell phone and then possibly give the operator our address and directions to our house. My kids are smart, but in an emergency, some people don't think clearly and aren't able to give simple information that they normally could with no problem. The landline gives me piece of mind and also I don't want to take a lot of calls when I'm out and about. Only my family, closest friends and my kids school have my cell phone number. I will give it out to others on an as-needed basis (like a repair service, so the repair man can call me when he's on the way to my house, etc.). When I'm out, I'm busy and don't need to be talking on the phone. My in-laws dropped their landline awhile ago and it makes me nervous when my kids stay with them. They do tend to leave their cell phones on the kitchen counter, however, so my kids could probably find them if they needed to make an emergency call. My two brother-in-laws are in their 20s and neither of them have a landline, but they are hardly ever home and they always have their cell phones with them. For them, I think it's great not to bother with a land line. Sarah.....mom to Jason & Devin Sarah.......mom to Jason & Devin |

We do still have a landline in our house, because we have four kids. The two older ones have cell phones, but it is not feasible to buy for the little guys right now. Otherwise, I would drop the landline in a heartbeat-I think it's about $30 per month.

I think it's a good idea with kids, there was a story awhile back here if i remember right the person called 911 for an emergency <cant rmember what kind> on the cell, they said the street and all but the system picked up that it was in another borough and that's where the crews went. here if I say I'm in such and such zipcode it doesnt actually tell you the name of the borough I'm in it tells you I'm in another town

We are sticking with a landline for now, for several reasons. The 911 thing mentioned in earlier posts, the fact that I can't find my cell phone half the time, the fact that this is a big house and we currently have 6 phones on the upper level and probably 5 on the lower level and there is always a phone handy, and the last reason is that I have trouble hearing on my cell phone. I have to put it on speaker phone and then put it to my ear and I still have problems, often, hearing what is being said. For some reason, I don't have that problem with my landline phones. I know I could get another phone, but I really can't spend that money right now so I'm stuck for now.

Ditto what wildwood wrote. Sums it up for me except for the last sentence. I don't really care about getting a new cellphone, cuz I'm not really into it anyways. cj/

| This is the number one complaint I hear from our local dispatchers for the 911 system. I have heard so many horror stories about a small child calling 911 when something happened to the only parent in the home and they were so scared they could not think straight enough to tell them their address and there is lots and lots of stories about older family members calling from their cells and passing out before giving their addresses. All these problems could have been avoided if they called from a land phone. When it comes to emergencies, time should not have to be wasted trying to find out a address. The dispatches HATE cell phones around here.

Actually, I am glad we have both land and cell phones. The year my husband was really sick, I call 911 about 15 times to get him to the hospital. But there were a few times I called my daughter on a cell phone when we were away from the house. I have even called 911 from my cell a couple of times because we were not at home.

Where I live, the 911 system can identify where you are with a cell phone. Also, when we got rid of the landline I kept one house phone plugged into the system. Although it doesn't work otherwise, it can be used to dial 911. If you are thinking about ditching your land line, call your provider and ask about this capability.

We mainly use our cell phones and our internet is wireless but, we have to have the landline for the alarm system. We do have a wireless remote that will kick in when the landline doesn't work but I want both of those suckers in place if I do have someone trying to break in!!
