What do you think is the worst addiction to have?

DH and I were talking about being thin, something neither one of us is, and we were saying that if we did drugs and drank, we'd be skinny. Just kidding of course.

So what is the worst addiction?

I know there are a lot of different ones, but I tried to pick the most common for the poll.

I have a food addiction, can't help myself. I did smoke for about 10 years, but quit 10 years ago.

the worse addiction is the addiction that causes the people you love the most pain and sorrow.....

I have a Sister-in-law who is addicted to Meth. She used to be cute, funny, clever, smart, a GREAT mom and wife. It has changed everything about her and made her absolutely disgusting. She really grosses me out (can you tell I grew up in the 80s?).

* She is very underweight and looks like Holocaust victim
* She never has clean clothes and rarely showers
* She has lost her home
* She has lost her DH (who is wonderful)
* She has lost her KIDS
* She picks at herself all the time
* She has open sores everywhere
* She will do ANYTHING with any guy..and I mean ANYTHING to get Meth
* She is very stupid and can not complete a sentence

(she has been in 2 rehabs and 1 out patient clinic..she has taken advantage of my inlaws, who have big hearts and wallets. They have given up on her to save themselves)

Probably drugs... my MIL died from a drug overdose, probably prescription.. and probably intentionally. And she wasn't skinny.

For me it would be food.

I know from experiance that I am an all or nothing person. I smoked for 25 years and in trying to quit I figured out that if I had ONE cigerette I immediatly went back to a pack a day. So I laid them down and know I can never touch another one. That has worked for 12 years.

So with food, I can occasionally tame my addiction but as long as a person needs food to survive, for me the temptation to overdo is always there.

I don't think there is any good addiction, but I think drugs would be the one to have the quickest and most devastating impact. Even watching Dr. Phil the other day-there was someone on there that had an addiction to exercise. As a person who rarely exercises, my first thought was to be jealous. But after hearing more about it, about how much time she spent doing it, and how much weight she was losing, it was obviously a problem. Let's not even mention those of us who have husbands who are workaholics-that's really an addiction as well. I think most people, while they might not want to admit it, have a true addiction to something.

I think they're all bad, too. But I voted for drugs. My reasoning is this. My mother has a food addiction. She eats constantly and always gains weight. But there are medicines for the side effects. For example, she is a diabetic and makes no effort what-so-ever to control it with diet. But she pops her insulin pills and takes her injections every day. 3 years ago she had a minor heart attack. She went into the hospital for a quintuple (yes, 5) bypass surgery. She came out with cleared arteries and has made NO changes in lifestyle, diet or excercise. Now she taks a ton of heart medications every day. She just keeps eating and gaining weight. I know eventually she will die from it, but the meds are there to prolong it.

With a drug addiction, there are no meds (that I'm aware of anyway) to combat the side effects of doing them. I have to agree with linnybop that they have the quickest most devastating impact.

This is just my opinion and in no way scientific, but just out of frustration watching my mom eat herself to death.

I voted for drugs, and thank God I have no personal stories. I think BeccaRose spelled it out accurately on a personal level. When you lose all control of your mind and actions, what's left?

My personal addiction is food.

However, as the mom of a son born drug affected (who we adopted from foster care), I believe the worst addiction is drugs.

Wish, I would have mentioned it before, but by far DRUGS have to be the WORST!!!! What about the poor innocent babies, born into addiction. How much sicker can you get beyond that? They didn't ask for it. Life is hard enough, for the little innocent time to be ripped away by ignorance. A tiny baby, to pay for it's mothers addictions? It should be a felony.....

I think any addiction is a bad thing. It doesn't just affect you, but the ones around you too.

I'm addicted to sugar-- I love a sugar high! Does that count as drugs?

I was surprised gambling wasn't on the list, but honestly, anything you are addicted to is bad.

OMG I can't believe I of all people forgot gambling!? My Dad spent fortunes on lottery, when we cleaned his house out we found thousands of dollars of losing tickets, thousands!! That should have been there, sorry.
