I would say he definitely needs to see an ENT doctor (Ear, Nose, and Throat) It sounds like his tonsils and/or adnoids are enlarged and probably need taken out. They say snoring is hazzardous to your health. I would say "yes, take him to the doctor". Your family doctor can refer you to an ENT or you can choose one on your own.

Both my kids have snored since birth. We haven't taken them to be checked out. I don't think it a real problem, just annoying.

I have a 5 year old that snores. he has been to an ent and had his tonsiles/adnoids removed. He still snores not as loud but still there. His brother says he sounds like a coffee pot where he used to sound like a lawn mower LOL. I would say take him in--cant hurt.

My friend's 7 yo dd had her tonsils out last spring and she said she no longer snores. She ask the doctor about this and the dr. said her snoring had been because of the tonsils and sinus problems, they were causing her to not breath properly and thus causing her to snore when she slept. My 9 yo dd has very enlarged tonsils and has had strep throat a couple of times since she was 6. But not once have the doctors she's seen mentioned that she needed her tonsils out. She too snores and it makes me wonder.....she doesn't snore all the time but sometimes it's very bad.....

Both of my daughters have enlarged tonsils, and adneoids. We went to see an ENT this past summer. One daughter has always snored horribly. The dr said so long as she is getting enough sleep, and is well rested-it is not reason alone to have her tonsils/adneoids removed-which I completely agreed with. Is it causing your son to not get enough rest? I would definitely go to an ENT for piece of mind.

I'd say it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out by an ENT. We took our son to an ENT because he seemed to be having some apnea when he slept...scared the bajeebers out of me. They checked it all out and took x-rays and concluded that his adenoids were a little enlarged. He was only 3 years old at the time (4yo now). She prescribed him some Nasonex since I told her he's had nose stuff most of his life, too...and that he'd been snoring. So we tried the Nasonex (and propping his mattress up a little) and it helped quite a bit. We stopped seeing any apnea and his nose cleared up quite a bit and the snoring is basically gone. When we went back for a check-up she said his adnoids were still a little enlarged but that he was still young and that they weren't so large that she'd recommend removal and that he could still grow "into" them. So far so good... peapie |
