Wink Great books?? What are you reading, or waiting to read?

I was so happy with all the visitors over the holidays as I was able to bring out all my books and let my friends & relatives choose a bunch to enjoy. They really were happy to get them! (And I was delighted to get them out of here!)

I am reading Steve Martin's book, "Born Standing Up" now, and really enjoying it. Two of my kids are reading Colbert's "I Am America", which I plan to read next. I have a few bookstore giftcards to use, and would love some ideas!

I just read a bunch of good ones:

The Time Traveler's WIfe (AWESOME, but REALLY LONG)
The Road (fast reading and good, but a bit strange)
A Thousand Splendid Sons (then went and read Kite Runner) both GREAT!
some older John Grishams

I can't wait to read the new Stephen King one coming out! Dean Koontz has a new one too.

I tried reading The World Without Us, but couldn't get into it, I'll give it another try since it was such a best seller.

I would love some suggestions too! I try to get books at the Salvation Army or somewhere since they are so expensive, I am saving my Borders GC for Stephen King.

I still have books from last Christmas that I haven't been able to get to. I think I have Lissey's Story from Stephen King and at least 4 Jodi Piccoult books. Guess I should get off here and go read eh?

What book is Stephen King coming out with?

It's called Duma Key and coming out on Jan. 22. He also released Blaze under Richard Backman that I read just recently, that was a pretty good one too, but you could tell it was some of his older work.

I love to read! Unfortunately I go on reading binges and then I can't remember what I read!

Our library has an online system where you can log into your account and put books in your queue. When the books become available you get an email notice-then all you have to do is go to the front desk and give them your card.

I like to take the book section of the Sunday paper to find books to put in my queue. I'll also go to Barnes and Noble online or Amazon and look through their bestsellers or their what's coming section.

I have these on my waiting list right now:

Away : a novel by Amy Bloom

Look me in the eye : my life with Asperger's by Robison, John Elder

Manless in Montclair : a novel : how a happily married woman became a widow looking for love in the wilds of suburbia by Edelman, Amy Holman

My kids are huge readers as well, so lots of times I'll put new books on my list for them.

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Piccoult was good; also Memory Keeper's Daughter (I think that's the name of it); I couldn't get into Water for Elephants, although I should try again - I've heard it's so good.

both the Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns were great; I haven't seen the Kite Runner movie yet.

Last night I started "Rhett Butler's People". I'm about half way through. So far, it doesn't suck.

My mother always reads books before giving them to me, and vice versa. sometimes, if the book's really awful we just don't pass it on. We really liked the Amazon.com: The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (Book 1): Books: Alexander McCall Smith series, but hated the guy's other books. I just ordered Picnic At Hanging Rock, and one of the Foxfire books, both of which were a bit of work to find, and if I like them, I'll either send them to her, or find additional copies.

I'm waiting on The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing and The gathering by Anne Enright from the library. I just finished A Virtuous Woman by Kaye Gibbons. It's been around for quite awhile but I just hadn't read it yet. I liked it and it was a quick read.

I'm so looking forward to reading that. Waitlisted at my library where there are almost a 100 holds so it will be a while. Glad to hear it doesn't suck. Messing with GWT is tricky as an author a number of years ago discovered -- that book did suck.

Lol - I'm glad to hear that too. I just added it to my list of books to read.

Right now I am reading the cozy mystery series from Joanne Fluke - Hannah Swensen. I hadn't heard of them before until I heard other people say they were good. It is very unbelievable, but still at the same time kind of fun for me to read.

Ok. I LOVE this thread.

I read Steve Martin's book "Born Standing Up". It was good and interesting to follow his career. A Thousand Splendid Suns was my favorite book of 2007. I gave a couple of copies as gifts at Christmas. I also loved The Kite Runner (same author).

Look Me In the Eye was very good. It was written by the brother of the guy who wrote Running With Scissors (which I have not read or seen the movie --yet). "Away" was a book that I had brought home but never got a chance to read it. It was due back at the library. Let us know if that is good, Skipperdee. Memory Keepers Daughter -- I also didnt' get a chance to read before I took it back. I seem to get all my library holds in at the same time and because they are popular, they are due back in two weeks.

Water For Elephants was good and different. Loved "I Feel Good About My Neck". I'm almost the right age, and I love New York.

My Sister's Keeper was very good with a twist. Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult (same author) was also good with a twist.

A book that I just finished this week was Sue Grafton's latest -- T is for Trespass. It was very good. She had a very well thought out plot. I would recommend it!

I'm waiting for James Patterson's Double Cross to come in. I think there are maybe 4 people ahead of me on the hold list at the library. Anyone read that yet, and did you like it? Sometimes he puts them out a little too fast and they aren't as good as they could be.

I am close to getting Rhett Butler's People also. Maybe 4 people ahead of me. I'm looking forward to that one.

Also, did you all know that Janet Evanovich has a new one coming out this week? It's called Plum Lucky and it is another half step book. Check at your library and get a hold on it. Hopefully she didn't put this one out too fast. I was a little disappointed in Lean Mean Thirteen. Not as funny as some of the previous series. Fabulous Fourteen by her comes out this June.

Now you all know why one of my New Years resolutions is to read less!! I read a book on average every 2 - 3 days. A couple of newspapers everyday, and lots of magazines too. And I work at the library!!

Is it possible to read too much?

I am the same way and actually could go broke buying magazines and books!? Maybe a job at the library wouldbe the best thing! Our library is about 30 minutes away and I just don't make the trip.

My resolution is read as much as I can as long as I don't have to buy it! I try to look at thrift stores, and to friends and relatives to keep my stocked up.

Maybe next week I will print this thread and head down there and get some of these listed, thanks everyone!

I'm a fast reader, flipper!!
And it takes me 2 - 3 minutes to get to work by car!!
Does your library maybe have a bookmobile that comes to your area?

I forgot to tell you all (who might be interested) James Patterson has another new book coming out real soon called 7th Heaven. Put it on reserve now at the library!!

Have you checked to see if you can have books mailed to you. Our library will do that very reasonably. The books are sent in special packaging and returned in the same packaging. Even if it costs a few dollars sounds like it may be cheaper then buying gas to drive 30 miles.

I just finished reading the Almost Moon by Alice Sebold. After I read that I had to read her other two books; Lucky and the Lovely Bones. All three are excellant books. Sebolds style is very fluid. She attacks subjects that rest in the darkest part of your heart and brings them to the light with honesty.

I am no in the middle of the Memory Keepers Daughter. In my opinion it moves a little slow, but I still love it.

Yes, James Patterson's Double Cross is very good. But The Quickie is even better.
Lisa Garnder's "Hide" is very good to!
Joy Fielding's "Heartstopper" very twisted!!
Harlen Coben's "The Woods" great book!!

Usually to get the good books fast, I read a magazine and when I see the book club order forms I just look at all the new releases of my fav authors and go straight to the computer to reserve the books at the library.

I just finished "Eat, Pray, Love". My husband gave it to me as a Christmas gift. I would recommend it - it was a very quick read (nearly all are for me, anyway). Easy to get into and kept my interest I don't remember the author (Elizabeth something maybe). My husband saw the book on Oprah. She did a two-part show on it and I guess she just ranted and raved! It is not overly religous and she does not push any agenda. I was hesitant to read it because of the title, but very glad that I did . . .

I also read a ton. There is a book swap program that you might be interested in. My DH complained about it at first because he does most of the post office runs but I love it. Check it out!! You can post your read books and someone will request them. You pay postage, get credits when it is recieved and then you can go to the web site and request a free book for yourself.

PaperBackSwap : Your source for swapping books online!

It is certainly worth checking out and I love it!

I just finished Dean Koontz's new book... The Darkest Evening of the Year. It was a quick read and I really enjoyed it. I got the book for xmas and I LOVE that my hubby had it signed by the author. I collect Dean Koontz books and was so happy!

I always recommend these two books when we talk about good books, so I might as well do it again. I loved My Sisters Keeper by Jody Picoult (not sure about spelling of her last name). I also really enjoyed The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I read The Almost Moon by Sebold too and found myself not enjoying it at all. It was very dark and just strange.

Okay, these are all great suggestions, but 7th heaven already has 56 holds! But there will be 34 copies, so it shouldn't take too long to get it once it comes in. Thanks for all the great suggestions... Also, I just started "Gathering Blue" by Lois Lowry... It's interesting, so far reminds me of the movie "The Village" We'll see how it turns out. So do most of you belong to book clubs where you get together to discuss the books? I've never done that, but I have a friend who is in one. I just ask her what they are reading to get more ideas.

Funny, I really liked both of those as well and hated Almost Moon!!
I hated Lucky, too.

I just finished Manless in Montclair-cute, and a very quick read. I own The Kite Runner, guess I'll start on that while I wait for another on my queue to come up.

My son brought me home the new Patricia Cornwell book - The book of the dead. I started reading it Fri. night and finished it last night. He bought it so I would have a book to read on the plane when I leave this Fri. that didnt work so well lol. I am a book addict I can't slowly read a book once it grabs me I have to finish it.

I am going to grab Tess Gerishams (sp) new book when I am at the airport to read on the plane I like her books as much as I like Patricia Cornwell.

I read constantly, but some I finished recently and loved were
Ken Follett "Pillars of the Earth", and the sequel "World Without End"
Allison Weir "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" (non fict) and "Eleanor of Aquataine" (it was interesting to see real events from this book merge into the fictional "pillars of the earth)
Dan Simmons "The Terror"
also cant remember the author, but "Empress Orchid" and "The Last Empress"...a fictional portrayal of the last Chinese emprees
I really liked "Water for Elephants". Not only do I love elephants, and the story, but I am Polish, which is the language the elephant understood.

I am reading My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Piccoult as well. So far I am really enjoying it.

I also just got Bob Woodruffs book, In an Instant: A Family's Journey of Love and Healing. I am going to read that next. I'm really intrigued by his whole story.

Sophie Kinsella has a new book coming out next month-- "Remember Me?". I can't wait to read it!

I'm currently reading: "I'd rather do chemo than clean out the garage." It's pretty funny.

Finished Rhett Butler's People a few days ago.

Two big, fat thumbs up!!! Way better than that crappy Scarlett. This was an almost seamless addition to GWTW. It made sense and it fit. You could almost imagine MM writing this at the same time as GWTW.

I started Patricia Cornwell's "Book of the Dead"

But then my friend gave me a couple books for Christmas. And I started one of those, "CSI MIAMI ~Harm for the Holidays Misgivings" by Donn Cortez. It is quit good. I will have to restart "Book of the Dead" after I am done with this one!

I have read just about all of Patricia's "Scarpetta Series" I love them

I am in the middle of RHETT BUTLER'S PEOPLE and love it. Would love to read the new Kay Scarpetta book if somebody who is reading that one wants to trade.

Are you talking about Book of the Dead? I have it here. I'll probably start it tonight after I finish Double Cross. I'd love to trade with you but it's from the library and I think they'd frown upon that.

I read so much I rarely buy books any more. I'd be broke!

I just finished that OJ book I was reading now I am looking for something new to start. I have THE ALMOST MOON by Alice Sebold, WHAT MATTERS MOST by Luanne Rice and THE QUEEN OF BEDLAM by Robert Mccammon to choose from. Anybody read any of these and was it good?

Thumbs up Hp

Harry Potter. The hype is real. If you have not yet read any, I suggest starting from the beginning and reading the entire series. You'd be surprised how good they really are. JK Rowling is a genius and I can bet you find yourself getting wrapped up in what everyone is talking about. It doesn't matter if you're 8, or 88.. read Harry Potter.

I love Sophie Kinsella! I just read my first book of hers and loved it! I also really enjoy Jennifer Crusie, in addition to Janet Evanovich, of course. I love mindless reading....
