Warning those wristbands could kill you!

Quote:
There are currently no standards of color choice for hospitals using color-coded wristbands, and each hospital has a different set of colors for different indications. This lack of standardization creates the potential for errors. For example, some hospitals have used yellow to signify “Do Not Resuscitate,” leading to several near-misses with patients wearing yellow Lance Armstrong “Livestrong” bracelets. If a standard color choice existed for DNR orders, the potential for errors with either personal patient wristbands or those used by hospitals would be averted.
Patients' Near Misses: Some Hospital's 'Do Not Resuscitate' Wristbands Look Like Lance Armstrong 'Livestrong' Bracelets

Wow, close calls with people wearing those yellow live strong wristbands. You would think that some sort of national standard would be needed for this sort of thing now wouldn't ya?

I thought when you went into the hospital, they made you remove all jewelry??? Also, I have seen DNR on the door/wall for people who do not want to be revived. Oh, and also behind the head of the bed.

well, since I'm a know it all, I've GOT to add my two cents:

Having been admitted to the hospital, having had relatives admitted to the hospital and having worked in hospital ERs, I can say it's been my experience that upon admittance the hospitals have either taken off all jewelery (including the cute little bracelets) or requested that all jewelery be removed.
Furthermore, if hospital staff depends solely on the wristlets to ID a patient and any treatment orders then they are negligent in their treatment of said patience. Generally, orders or important info (such as allergies, DNR, etc.) is in the pt.'s charts, written on a white board, and on the bracelet. It is usually protocol to confirm the information before proceeding with any treatment. So, I think this article is not necessarily a reflection of what occurs in the majority of the hospitals.

All the hospitals I've been to (either for myself or to visit) require all jewelry to be removed. I suppose this could be a problem in the ER though.

I think we have a winner. I've brought jewelry to a relative in hospital, though in this case, it was a number of rings that were made to be easily removed, not wristbands. They were replacements for the good jewelry she wasn't able to bring with her. This makes a lot more sense now.
