Angry Silly Games people play

I hate to ban users and delete threads but creating a username that is virtually the same as another user for the sole purpose of being annoying can only result in that username being banned and threads created with that name being deleted. If you notice that some threads are now gone that's why I deleted them.

If this kind of silliness is going to continue, I'll have to figure out what I can do to completely block the networks these folks are visiting from, I sure hope I don't have to do something so drastic and that people can just be somewhat civil and not create new accounts for the sole purpose of causing pain to other members.

We won't let the actions of a few ruin things for everybody, so there are no worries about shutting this place down.

I apologize for adding to some of the drama........I just felt enough was enough. Plus I was bored and had a glass of wine which is all it takes for me!! Thanks for reassuring us that you won't shut down this board.

Great job Greg. I, for one, appreciate your willingness to help reassure us that this type of foolishness won't be tolerated.

Way to go. I have some pretty strong opinions about certain things and am very vocal about them. I have never used another screen name just to troll or stir up trouble. If I have something to say I will say it and thats it. But this name thing is low, way low.

Greg can't you ban through an I.P. address?

No, anyone change their IP address and banning an entire network could result in a lot of innocent people not having access to Mycoupons.I think things should settle down a lot now.

dolly you are exactly right. IPs change too often today, heck if you use AOL your IP can change during a single session. So if we block an address it is very possible for an innocent to get blocked. I sure hope things calm down a bit now.

Hi! I was gone for most of the day. I guess things got pretty rough. So glad to see that things are calming down. I appreciate the efforts being made on behalf of The Cafe. Thanks Greg.

Thanks Greg,
I do think there is a time to ban the problem people, just like they used to do here!
It never got this nasty before, so I guess it had some merit!

I am glad to see that you are not going to let this board turn into a complete war zone.

Am I the only one not bothered by any of this stuff?

I am not even sure exactly what it is all about but from what I have skimmed through it doesn't really amount to anything.

thanks Greg, I would really miss the Cafe if it were to shut down. Glad to see you are aware of what is going on and that you have taken an active role in trying to keep things on track.

Ditto, I love coming to mycoupons, But I could do without all the sparring that goes on, I have been coming here for years, I read the posts that I find interesting, not looking to see who the poster is. I know a few poster names, but that is it.

This is a really tricky one. Having multiple moderators would help a lot, but I've seen the problems that happened there. Blocking IP addresses isn't much help, since those are recycled so often. Moderated membership helps, but it's a PITA.

I think the best solution, if possible, would be to bring in more moderators who don't post under their moderator names for anything other than administrative purposes. That should preserve some anonymity, and avoid feelings that people are being singled out. It should also help balance the workload. Obviously hostile posts should be deleted, since there's really no nice way to settle some fights. Anyone who's picking on one or two people, but otherwise a decent poster, should be warned. Personal attacks should be deleted right away, and repeat offenders, or new users who start out with attacks, banned.

I've moderated message boards aimed at kids and teens, and the one advantage there was being able to pull the adult card. Dealing with adults is a lot trickier, and the solution we finally went for was moderated membership, and anonymous moderators. Obviously, this is for a much smaller board. Even still, we've dealt with DDOS attacks and email harassment.

It's not a fun position to be in, but if you're paying for the server, it is okay to make the rules. You should try to be fair, but at the end of the day, it's not a democracy, it's a private website.

That's a great thought, however, when the moderators use only their screen name for personal posts and then their mod name for administrative purposes, it can create problems if the ones with the screws loose are the ones in charge.

There was an instance a while back, where a moderator was saying hurtful things using her screen name and then forgot which name she was under..and in the same thread blasted someone under her mod name Up until that point, no one knew that she was the mod. It was kept hush hush...which led to some people being in charge that might not have all of their bearings in tow.

I was pleased when I started coming back on more regularly and saw the mods post regular messages under their mod names. You know who they are, at least!

I don't know what a solution would be and honestly I am just SO happy to see that the bad crap hopefully is being stopped.

I didn't realize, however, that you can not ban by IP address because they change so often. Thanks for clarifiying that. It is too bad. You could really get rid of the riff raff if that could be done. The sad part is, these are posters who have been a part of our community for many years and have contributed much in a good way-only to let their anger and self loathing get the best of them to hurt and strike out to others.

Okay, I am done with this subject. I feel as if I am preaching and I don't want to do that. I, for one, am glad to see the board moving away from these discussions and I surely don't want to keep bringing it up.

Thanks again, to all of our MC staff. You are Awesome!
