DH has had people coming in and calling, the shop, all morning, most very mad. Evidently last night someone called around trying to selling satellites but our business number came up as the number they called from. Some of the people even talked with the people, it must have been a good deal as some of them showed up today to pick up/ pay for, not sure which, their satellites.

I just got off the phone with the phone company, she did what she could to figure it out. Of course she couldn't so she filed a "trouble ticket" and someone else is suppose to figure it out by 7pm tonight. I just thought I would see if you all had ever heard of this before. It's very weird.

It sounds like a marketing scam but how in the world would they be able to get our number to show up?

I did a quick google on "false number coming up on caller id" and one of the first on the top of the long list was this:

Trust Who(SM): Caller ID Spoof

Sounds like the spoofing is available through some websites. I feel bad for your DH for having to deal with the angry customers when it isn't his company's fault.

I hate caller Id spoofing! I have picked up calls that "appeared" to be legit (ie: companies I would answer the phone to talk to) BUT they weren't. It's a scheme to get credit card info from people who trust hte business name. I hope those people didn't give any CC info!

not had this problem but did have a huge problem a few yrs ago when the phone company put out their new books and made a misprint in the phone number to the local social security office. one number wrong was all it took for us to get thousands of calls. we changed our out going message on the machine saying 'THIS IS NOT THE SOCICAL SECURITY OFFICE, THEIR NUMBER IS>>>>>>" but no one ever listened to it and left tons of messages . the bad part was we had to listen to each message to see if it was one for us or for the ss.

Thanks guys! The phone company has done all they can and came to the conclusion that it must be telemarketers that have figured a way to use our number.

Thank goodness, I don't think anyone gave them a cc. Evidently though it sounded like a good deal. Hopefully, they are done using the shop number now. DH has been covered up since Christmas and got really irritated. Every year it seems that everyone puts off their big car repairs til after the holidays. I finally went up and answered the phone the rest of the day for him.
