Dairy Intolerance. Know Anything About?

My 14 yr old daughter has been not eating breakfast for about two months now. She likes to eat, but says that her stomach can't handle it, especially in the morning. Lately, she has been only eating half of her lunch as sometimes her stomach bothers her. We have suspected that it might be dairy, particularly milk. Today she said that they only thing they had at lunch to drink was milk, so she had one. Within 15 minutes, her stomach started bothering her. Is dairy the culprit?

I could be...... to be sure, rule out all dairy products.... esp MILK........ usually cheese isnt the one. Buy her something else to drink for breakfast, eat toast etc... . My kids were good at eating leftovers for breakfast esp Pizza....... youngest son had dairy allergies. He is almost 17 now and can drink milk just not large quanties. We did have him tested he was allergic to about 7 things.

P.S. I dont think I could drink milk in the mornings.... the thought just grosses me out........ but thats me. To this day I do not drink milk, I do take vitamins.

I do have Chron's and it is not fun. call the Dr.. or do the ruling yourself.

We have Milk ALLERGIES here so my kids don't get milk period in any form whatsoever.

but have you ever heard of something called Crohn's Disease? ---- you may want to google and read some on it.
It's sometimes sudden onset in teens and adults....
If nothing else, some of the websites can help with dairy free recipes which would utimately help ease your way around cooking without milk if that's what you suspect is causing the problem.

Sorry for the feeling yucky!
Here's one link....scroll down about half way for the info.

What you are describing is probably lactose intolerance. Lactose is milk sugar. Intolerance occurs when an individual lacks the proper enzymes to break down the molecule into simple sugars. It can happen at any time.

Symptoms would include gas, cramping and sometimes bloating. Sometimes the symptoms can seem quite severe.

Cultured milk products, cheese, yogurt, and buttermilk, are usually tolerated. You can add lactase (the missing enzyme) drops to milk or buy milk with the sweet acidopholus culture added.

Avoid milk and ice cream.

Milk allergy is actually an allergy to the protein found in milk. It does have similar symptoms but is less common.

Thumbs up

Ganeden Biotech, Inc.

DD takes the Digestive Advantage Lactose Intolerance. This allows her to have some dairy products but still not a lot. On days that she is going to have ice cream or pizza she takes two pills.

My youngest DD seems to have some trouble with milk. We use silk soy milk for cereal or whenever you might use milk . They love it. I have trouble with the concept.

My DD is 14 and she had stomach pain with dairy as well. She uses the OTC lactose pills and has no problems. You just take one immediately before eating dairy products. The only problem is that she's not allowed to carry them to school, but she just doesn't eat dairy then.

I'd start by buying a package of those and see if it helps the problem. They're under 10.00.

I too suffer from lactose intolerance.. and let me tell you the tummy aches I get when I have eaten dairy is enough to bring me to my knees. I would back away from dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, everything dairy) and then gradually add it back in (try yogurt first, then cheese, then milk) .. do it like you did when you offered her baby food.. same item 3 days at a time.. note any extra gas or whatever then add the next thing.. keep doing this gradually and you should be able to pinpoint this if it is a dairy allergy.

I too, am HIGHLY lactose intolerent. Lactose gives me severe stomach pains, and I usually have to run to the bathroom very quickly and very frequently.

I eat a high fiber diet as that slows things in my stomach if I do have a little bit of dairy. I also use pills that you take before you eat dairy. I use the lactose free milk. If I have something that is dairy and high fat -- like cheesecake-- nothing will work. I have to suffer through it and it hurts. I just try to watch it. Of course my favorite food in the whole world is the Cheesecake Factory's White Chocolate Raspberry cheesecake. Yum. I only have it once or twice a year and I bulk up my fiber before hand.

If your daughter has to use Lactaid pills, the cheapest I've ever found are at Walmart. They are the Walmart brand Equate and they are FAR cheaper than Lactaid Brand. I'm not a big fan of Walmart, but I save a lot of money on these so I stock up on these there. The Digestive Advantage pill doesn't work that great for me but we are all different in our levels of intolerance.

Don't forget, milk is used in baked goods, cheese can be in salads and on sandwiches. Cream soups won't work. Be on the lookout.

You will have to cut dairy for a week from her diet and see if it makes the difference.

Also, feel free to PM me, if I can help in anyway. The internet and your library will have info too.

Also, my lactose intolerance came on slowly as an adult in my 20s. It didn't happen all of the time, just occasionally and then just gradually got worse. That makes it hard to figure out, but one day the light bulb went on.
