Cigarette prices...

Just out of curiosity what are the cigarette prices in your area? I understand that outside of NYC we are one of the highest in the area....

5.48 for a pack of Ma*****os yesterday at K mart...

Are the southern states cheaper or is that a myth?
Thanks!

Oh my goodness!!!! I am sooooo glad I don't smoke anymore.

I will have to ask my dad how much he pays for his cigarettes now.

So it kills you and is ridiculously expensive what more does it take to make people quit? Expensive poison.

Depending on where you buy them they are close to $6/pack here (Montana). On top of the price there is a rather hefty state tax added on ($1.50--I think)

Yeah, they're almost $6 a pack here.

I know a lot of smokers buy them by the pack rather than the carton so they would be spending (with tax) almost $50 a week if they "only" smoke one pack a day.

If a husband and wife both smoke, you're talking $400 a month!

Holy Guacamole Batman! YIKES! We don't smoke (never have) but I do know here in CO there is a per pack tax on top of the price and it's expensive. I have had 6 relatives quit smoking over the last 6 years because of the cost

Here in Indiana they run around $4.85/pk. When we were in Florida, they were $7.35/pk!

As far as quitting goes, it's much easier to say you'll quit then it is to actually do it. I've tried MANY times and ended up going back.
Dh & I are both currently trying to quit and it's slow going but we are working together on it.

Pretty hefty with our tax system here in NJ. I think they are between 6 and 7 bucks. I know a lot of people buy cartons in Delaware, which is much cheaper.

Heard an interesting discussion on our local radio this morning. A man from NJ was renting a car. It would cost him $171 to do it right over the bridge in Pennsylvania, but $264 in NJ. The difference? A tax for the state's "war on terrorism"!! More money into the black hole that is New Jersey's politicians' pockets.

I am in NJ too and was gonna say the same thing about people going over the bridge to Delaware to save money. Everything here in NJ seems to be overly expensive, but then again we have an idiot for a gov.

That is so much easier to say then do. I truly commend those who have done it...
I guess I just have not made up my mind yet that I really want to quit!

I know here in Wisconsin, the cig tax went up a dollar a pack as of the first of the year. I don't know exactly what that makes a pack but they have to be at least $5.00.

My bad habbit is eating................ thank goodness.

I know in Maryland that as of the first of the year, the state tax was $2 a pack. I think a pack is about $4 or $5.

Well if you think that you're paying a high price in the lower 48, you definitely wouldn't want to be a smoker here in Alaska. Neither my husband or I smoke but when friends were moving up here they asked me to check out the prices for them.

A carton of cigarettes (the cheaper brands) are an average of $68 - $74 dollars per carton. Now if that wouldn't be enough of an incentive to quit, I don't know what else would.

I KNOW how hard it is to quit. I tried everything that was put out as far as aids to help you quit smoking and failed with all of it. I was even on Zyban along with the strongest patch, but that as like being on nothing.

As high as cigarettes were already, last summer there was another tax on them. I'm on a fixed income and was already spending about $110 a month for them. And that wasn't the higher priced ones.

Then I heard about Chantix. There is a Dr. in Logansport, In. that was nicknamed "dr. quit" because he was pushing his smoking patients to quit. He claimed a 90% success rate of his patients who was taking Chantix.
Now I have realized quite some time ago that for health reasons, I really did NEED to quit smoking. And I also realized that the cost of Chantix was about equal to to what I was paying a month for cigarettes. I have been a HEAVY smoker for MANY years. And I knew that quitting would be nearly impossible for me.
But I asked my dr. for a perscription for Chantix and she was more than happy to give it to me. And I'm happy to say that as of May 25 I have been a non smoker.

Chantix works differently that other smoking aids. It takes the desire for nicotin from your brain. But you still have to find a substitute for the hand to mouth motions. It does take some will power to quit, BUT, if you really want to quit, Chantix is the only way to go. After smoking as heavily as I did for so long, and after trying so many other ways to stop, all without success, yet I was able to quit with it.
I do still have an occational desire to light up, but I now have the will power to pass it up. And I'm around other people smoking quite often, but I can still refrain.

GOOD LUCK TO ANY OF YOU WHO TRY TO QUIT.

Wow, Barb - great job and great advice. Can't wait until you post that it's been a year!

Do you continue to take the Chantix or do you wean off it at some point? It would be nice to get that $100+/month to do something real nice for yourself.

I took myself off of it 3 or 4 weeks ago. So far---so good.
I'll hang on to what pills I have left for a while, then will give them to my dd who can't afford them. Maybe she'll quit also.

I don't smoke. I have a friend in Canada he smokes... Benson & Hedges, I'm familiar with that brand, my uncle used to smoke it.

I asked him what a pack of cigs cost there. He said about $11 that's for 25 cigs in the pack. I asked how much a carton cost he said $96. No wonder he only smokes one or half a a one every hour or 2!! INSANE!!!!!!!

I told him how much cig are cheaper here where we grow the tobacco.. told him I wish I could send him some cartons.. but I can't. Oh well

I'm still freaking... 96 DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
