I have to start making my own Saline Solution for everytime I change my wound dressing. I need to make it every 3 days.

The Home Health Nurse told me today to use 1 quart of water and I can't remember if she said 2tablespoons of salt, or teaspoons!

I tried looking on google.. and I'm getting things like.. it depends on the strength of the solution you want yadda yadda... I have no clue!!

I don't have a clue either but I suspect the 2 tsp. is correct. Why don't you call her and ask, just to be on the safe side. Do you have to boil the water with the salt in it? I can remember doing this years ago when my MIL was here after surgery, but was so long ago and I don't remember the amounts.

Yup.. I have to boil the water to kill all the nasties. I use such a small amount on my tiny wound, but I still have to make it every 3 days.

I think I will call the Home Health Care place tomorrow, to double check.. I wouldn't think 2tblsps that would be too salty and sting the wound, I would imagine.

Had to use saline with Kerlex (gauze) for a wound my Mother had over the summer. This is the "recipe" the wound nurse gave:

Normal Saline

1 tsp. salt (plain preferred) - slightly rounded

1 liter distilled water


If you use distilled water, you do not have to boil the water. We put the solution in the refrigerator when we made it. We were told it could last up to one week.

Mother's wound healed nicely. Hope yours heals quickly.
