Every year our town has a special day and we have a sort of carnival, some small rides, food, awesome fireworks, etc. I was on the committee a few years ago, but stopped for a while and now was asked back. This year's was so lame, almost embarrassing and they really need some ideas to get people there and to get the to participate.

We done these in the past:

horseshoe tornament
lawnmower races
battle of the bands
Little Miss and Little Mr crowning
small rides (bouncers that sort of thing)
Smokey the Bear
Fire Dept (with food stand too)
EMS
Historical Society
face painting
hay rides


I need some new ideas, or a good theme to suggest. I was thinking "get to know your neighbor" or "support your community" kind of thing. Maybe get local businesses to come?


What would get you to come? Or what does your town do that is so much fun? BTW it's in the summer so warm things are fine too.

We got to a few towns near us that do sidewalk sales. Is the place you hold the event near the towns business district? They block off the street and all the business have booths in the road. Some that are not on that road come and set up there too. They also have live entertainment and rides and things for the kids too.
They also have a farmers market at the same time. This is a very big draw and if the rest doesn't work, maybe that is an idea for you.

My sister plays kickball. She is almost 40 and overweight and she loves it! She is in a league. Maybe a kickball tournament. Most everyone should be able to play that.

I like art displays.There are always hungry artists that love to sell their paintings and art work at events like this plus a lot of people like me enjoy looking at it.
Another thing I like is barbeque rib competitions.
and Comedians

Craft vendors, scavenger hunt, raffles for prizes donated by local businesses (you can designate a charity to receive proceeds).

a big money maker hit at my dds school carnival was a booth that put casts on the kids (and adults) arms. Not a thick one and probably only 6 inches long. The booth was sponsered by a local medical center and nurses and drs donated their time to do the casts. They were put on very loosely so they were easy to get off. I think the "charge" in tickets was close to $6 but almost everyone had casts (me too). But a HUGE hit

How about the police coming and doing fingerprinting and poloroids for the parents ? In case your child comes up missing.
