Spelling and grammar that drives you crazy!

Yeah, I know, I fret about insignificant things - but it drives me crazy to see spelling and grammar errors - especially on posters, flyers, signs, and writing that is supposed to be professional As I get older and my brain doesn't function as well as it used to, I am making them myself, which drives me even more crazy - ooohhh, I get so mad at me!

Anyways, what spelling and grammar mistakes do you see that drive you crazy?

For me, it's the use of an apostrophe to make something plural.

At work, some idiot put up signs for the Toys for Tots drive all over the building that said TOY'S FOR TOTS (Note that the person wasn't even consistent in their mistake)

I'm also bothered by the use of YOUR for You are.....this one is really big.

(Gosh, I hope I'm not the only one that is bothered by such little things )

Thank you for this post.

Yesterday I was reading a post and saw "prolly" written for probably. It was not the first time that I have seen probably spelled that way. It stops me cold.

I agree that I get irritated with the use of an apostrophe to pluralize words and for incorrect contraction usage.

My daughter had a preschool teacher that would always spell Thursday "Thrusday". Hello! You are teaching our children! (Look at the big calendar on the wall)

OMG... I am bothered more and more by these things. I have to stop myself from correcting my sisters, nieces, daughter, etc on our MyFamily page because they think I'm being picky.

The misuse of YOUR and YOU'RE makes me crazy. I worry about the younger generation in there places of work. If they're making these simple grammatical errors at work what are their bosses thinking of them? But, it's possible the bosses don't know any better either.

I am so with you on the teachers that send home newsletters and such with blatant errors in them. Drives me nuts and scares the bajeebers out of me at the same time!

It concerns me with all the texting and shorthand notations that kids use nowadays that they have no clue how to spell the full words!

Things like that bother me too, but lately I've been trying to just ignore it and not let it bug me. With Inernet, IM, and texting *shortcuts*, people tend to use them everywhere. Unfortunately, times are changing.

However, I'm a teacher and I do not accept those *shortcuts* on papers. The kids honestly don't know why "b/c "and "prolly" are not acceptable. They say that if I know what it means, it should be OK.

Homonyms and lost apostrophes are bad, but invented words are worse. My brother had a teacher actually talk about 'fictitional' books.

They ALL sound like fingernails on a chalkboard to me!
The two things that annoy me the most are................

1. Using the word IDEAL for IDEA

2. Using which to refer back to a person.........
EXMPLE....
My brother , which is a farmer...........instead of..............My brother, who is a farmer

Spelling doesn't bother me quite as much for a couple of reasons.
First of all .........this is such small printing on here that it is too hard to see what you've written to be able to correct mistakes.
Second........My spelling is getting worse every year that I get older! By the time I am 100, I won't be able to spell at all!

Add me to the list....

they're, their and there
your and you're

There's more but those are misused A LOT.
Also, newsletters from school or a place of business....SPELL CHECK. I know we all make mistakes but I really feel that letters sent from schools or any business should be checked.

I'll tell you a really good one....when my oldest daughter was in second grade, they had a substitute teacher on Monday which was the day they received their new spelling words. The teacher always wrote the words on the board so the sub. did the same.....the kids were allowed to collectively come up with the last 5 spelling words following the pattern for the week. That week the pattern was plurals ending in ES. Well, the kids came up with words that did not fit the pattern but the sub used them and MADE them fit the pattern thus spelling the words wrong. It became humorous after a while! Sad though.

I saw that "prolly" too...I don't like it either! I also can't stand "jury" for "jewelry" and "lairwair" for "layaway". Being from Philly, we say "you know what I mean?" alot. Down here in the south I can't stand it when they say "Bless your heart". I think there was a whole other thread on this one time. ~Lisa

The school system here DOES NOT concentrate on grammer and spelling. They are too worried about "feelings" and political correctness. I HATE it!!!!
One of my biggest pet peeves is "anyways". That makes my skin crawl! I don't even think it's a real word!!! Take that "s" off people!! lol Seen for saw bugs me too.

There are times when it is done on purpose, especially on signs and community bulliten boards and sometimes flyers, it attracts attention and chatter, exactly what the advertiser/promoter wants.

"Did you see the sign at the firehouse, they spelled spaghetti dinner wrong!?" When in fact you just spred the word about a community event that would not have come up in conversation if it was spelled correctly.

My biggest grammer error is using a plural pronoun with a singular noun, or vice versa. For example
"The team is having their banquet." instead of "The team is having ITS banquet." Team is singular. I just heard Randy whatshisname from American Idol do this on a promo spot, he said MTV is getting read for THEIR instead of ITS newest show.

My biggest pet peeve with speech is people who say they "could care less" when they mean they "couldn't care less."

I feel sorry for the people who bought keyboards that don't have a period or comma.
Some only have capital letters

it is so hard to read those posts that go on and on with no punctuation!!

I once knew a woman who actually said the word "prolly" instead of probably. Drove me nuts.

My biggest spelling pet peeve is Voila! Its NOT Walla! its not even pronounced like that because there is a v sound in there.

I remember also about a lot. My English teacher in grade school taught us that and I haven't forgotten it.

Ditto here. I finally went in to preferences two days ago to enlarge the font size. I was actually using a magnifying glass on some of the sites.

No one seems to be able to spell separate. I have seen it spelled wrong so many times that now I have to stop and think when I use it. And the fact that site and sight have two different meanings seems to be a problem for many. To, too, and two are evidently a difficult concept also.

And I really really dislike the term hubby. I don't want to be called wifey and I will not call my husband, hubby. Is it really going to kill people to type those two extra letters? I guess that is my age showing too.

Generally speaking it just drives me crazy that people speak and spell however they want to.

And misspelling when you have spell check is just plain lazy.

It's the end of civilization! LOL only half joking!

Walla.....I crack up anytime I see that and I wonder how the person pronounces it. It's French, folks, upper teeth on bottom lip and blow - Voila!

As someone else mentioned, it is a web*site* not a sight. That's another good one!

There's some funny ones here - thanks for sharing them!

Oh, you tapped into a real issue for me - punctuation errors!!!!

I really can't stand when my Christmas cards come to "The Smith's" - I mean, they know that there are about seven of us living here, and they also know that we don't own anything. If they wanted to actually write the card to my house, then I guess I'd be okay with "The Smiths' House" but why write to my house? Didn't they just mean "The SMITHS" in the 1st place?

Also, on a grammatical level, I can't stand "SHOULD OF" instead of "should have" such as:

I should of just left the party by myself.

Ugggghhh! Thanks so much for giving us this little forum to voice these horrible language/punctuation problems!

All of the above!! I'm a former court reporter and everything had to be spelled correctly, so things like this really jump out at me.

One to add to the list is when people use the word "to" when they mean "too". Example, "I am to tired to go to the store."

All the others everyone has mentioned -- including the your/you're, they're/their, lose/loose.

Another one is ending a sentence like this -- "Where is the store located AT?" There's no need to add AT to the end of the sentence!!

One that really bothers me is when people say Heigth instead of Height. That drives me CRAZY! Around here, so many people say that (including my husband!) Just today we were at The Home Depot and the woman there that was working with us to design our kitchen remoldel, said that, and this is her profession! Ugh! Drives me nuts!

Regarding "a lot"... when I was really young, my big sister taught me a way to remember the correct way to spell that. Think of "a whole lot". There is a "hole" between the two! THat has always stuck with me!

I am also a teacher. The over use of pronouns without a noun. My students will begin an answer to a question with he, she, it, or they. For example: He did that to them. Who did what to whom?

I`m so afraid of posting on this site anymore. I know I probably said that wrong. A lot of times I will rush something. So I am apoligizing now for all my back posts and future ones. I`m not good at spelling or grammar. I try hard.

The only spelling errors I hate are my own.I always type in the dark so 75% of the time I will absent mindedly submit my post before checking for spelling errors, then once posted try to hurry up and edit and correct them before someone sees how stupid I am.

I haven't read the replies so these may have been posted but the two I hate are

when someone uses OF instead of HAVE. I should of gone to the store earlier. Should be I should have gone to the store earlier.

And the other one that bothers me is when people type/write a contraction and put the apostrophe in the wrong place, they put it between the words.
Like do'nt or does'nt. It goes where you took the letter out, don't doesn't.

OK I had to add one more thing, Rediculious is always spelled wrong all the time, it is getting to be ridiculous. LOL!!! And yes I know the correct spelling is with no E in it!

It doesn't bother me when people spell or use bad grammar on the boards. I can usually figure out what they are saying and just go on reading. I figure they are in a hurry or they just type as they speak.

What gets me the most and makes me stop reading a post is when people do not use punctuation. It just hurts my eyes to much to try and make it all out, so I usually don't read those posts.

I just assume you have children that won't be quiet when you're typing. That's my excuse!

My DH and I have a running quarrel with his use of the word "seen". He says "I seen that". I reply, "No, you saw that"

He disagrees.

So help me, which is correct?

TIA!

I'm pretty sure it's "saw" in that case. You would use "seen " with have, had, has, etc. Like, "She has seen him every day this week." My daughter has an awful time with verb tenses like that. This site will help.

I live down here too, I like that one.

"Bless your heart" and "Sweet pea". I don't know, just makes me feel warm inside!

I lived in the Philly area for a time too. I had a list of things operators had heard in that area. I about peed my pants! LOL! If I find it sometime, I'll post it, it's hysterical.

I cannot stand 'off of'. What the heck is 'off of'? I find it more and more often in books, I hear it in speech, I see it on signs. Drives me nuts.

I also do not take 'pixtures' with my camera. I take pictures.

The misuse of apostrophes is rampant, especially in advertising. Since these signs/ads must pass through many hands, I find it hard to believe not one person catches the errors.

Ain't I really dislike that word. I will not correct adults. But I do correct the kids in my class.
My husband is real good at saying ain't........ he is the only adult I will correct. Actually I think he says it to just get a rise out of me.
