What do you think Ds's teacher means?

DS has a project due next week which he needs to finish today as we are taking the kids on a little ski trip. He is doing a poster about Beijing, China. Part of the requirement is as follows:

a hand drawn map of the region in which the city is located, with the countries outlined, and the landform labeled

Dh thinks DS has to draw all the countries which are around China, as well as China itself. I think he has to draw an outline of China, and label Beijing. Otherwise, this is a fairly simple project, which makes me think the kid doesn't have to draw all of Asia for this map. How would you interpret these instructions? What do you think she means by landform? TIA.

I think the landforms are the mountains, oceans, forrests, etc.

I would also think he would have to label the countries that surround China - which is how I would read the outlined part...but that's just my take.

I would agree with your husband. Just make an outline of countries touching China. But you also have to label the mountains, rivers etc around Beijing. What grade is your son in, that would make a difference. If he is in 5th or higher, I would do all of the above. Ask your son if he remembers what the teacher said.

I think the teacher wants a hand drawn map of China plus surrounding countries. I think if a country is not touching China, it is safe to leave it off. Plus I assume the teacher wants larger bodies of water such as ocean, seas, lakes and rivers. Also and desserts and mountain ranges. In other words, I think your husband is closer than you are in his interpretation.

The original directions says "countries" which means more than one, so I would say the surrounding countries also should be included.

It does say countries as in plural, but landform is singular. Confusing instructions. He got the instructions onl Friday, so no chance to ask the teacher to clarify. We have called a couple kids in the class, but either not there, haven't started it yet, or have no clue . There are alot of countries that border China!!!!!! So he has labeled some mtn ranges and a desert, and a river near Bejing. He is in the process of adding on surrounding countries. That should take well over one hour!!!! Already 2.5 hrs into it.

I think the teacher wrote the instructions on the fly.

While it does say "countries", I wonder if she meant countries - plural - as in, by the time everyone in the class has done their project, a number of *countries* will have been drawn... kwim?

Had she given the instructions orally, and told the class, "Once you're done drawing your countries" I'd have assumed she meant each child drew a single country, and collectively, you end up with "countries."

Speaking from experience, I would say that the teacher discussed this in class, explained the details at least 50 times, and then wrote the instructions for the parents' benefit. Unfortunately, the students paid little attention because they knew mom and dad would tackle it! ;-) But, yes....just to be safe, I would name at least three-five landforms and label all the countries that border the area.
