Off Brands

My family got me to thinking. I was wondering if anyone prefers certain off brands over the name brands.

My family (this includes both dds and dh) prefers cheap Always Save sliced dill pickles for hamburgers. I have bought Vlasic before and they complained through the whole jar that they were too thick! I've also tried other brands and they are always too thick or "taste funny." They prefer only Always Save because they are thinner sliced and bigger around. I am assuming the bigger around is due them using the less desirable larger cucumbers.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone elses family prefers a cheap off brand to the name brand. We've had the topic before about what are you name brand loyal to, but not what are you cheap brand loyal to!

I really like Harris Teeter's brand (H.T. Trader) for rice. They have the best flavored rice-- Jasmine rice, basmati rice, etc.

Whole Foods 365 brand is good most times. They have some 365 cereals my kids like and their pasta sauces are great. I am not "loyal" to them because it's a half hour drive to the nearest Whole Foods but I would make them staples if one were closer

Amen to that!

We used to shop at TJ 13 years ago in San Diego, we then had a store in Virginia open near us. 5 years ago we moved to Texas and no TJ!!!!! I shipped with our household goods a huge box of TJ stuff. Any time we go to a state where there is a TJ we bring a bag full back with us, last year we went to Chicago on the train (20hrs!) and shipped a whole suitcase of stuff back with us. My family has even sent it to us as Christmas presents. Just love it.

Trader Joe's is way too good to count as a store brand. I really should go there soon. A lot of Canadian store brands are really, really good. I miss stuff from Loblaw's and Price Chopper, including an incredibly cheap brand called Mr Goudas. They had exactly one product I didn't like. In the US, Wal-Mart's own brand is really good. I like the salsa a lot, almost everything else is good, and even the pregnancy tests worked better than more expensive ones.

We do too it is so much better than kraft !

We seldom shop anywhere but Aldi, and I sure will miss it when we move to Florida unless they hurry up and get that warehouse distribution center built outside Orlando and build a bunh of Aldi's in FL. We fully intend on stocking up on cases of non perishables before we go our manager here has told us when were ready to call him and he will be sure he hs what we want on hand, he has been tapped to manage the warehouse in FL and has told my DH he has a job there when it opens should DH not stay with who he is with now.

I also like Bottom Dollar for certain things I cant get at Aldi, I love their catfish nuggets.

I love Kroger's premium select ice cream. Their chocolate is so good, I'll pay full price for it.

I miss Harris Teeter!! They moved out of our area a good 5 years ago and I've missed them ever since. I have no idea where the closest one is, I know they're around somewhere. I still have a small bag of HT decaf coffee! I've kept it in my freezer since I bought it, it's only for when my in-laws visit...but it's some darn good coffee and I'm NOT a decaf person.

This is what replaced HT for me. An Ace Hardware moved into the old HT place and Kroger was right across the street. Most Kroger brand items are very good. I know there's one thing Kroger brand I don't like, but I can't recall what it is right now.

Fry's Kroger brand pasta/spagetti sauce is really good.
Safeway store brand instant oatmeal is IMO better than Quakers.

Fry's also had a clip on car deodorizer unit with refills. It attached to the air vents. I loved it but now they don't carry it anymore (of course!). The vanilla bean scent smelled great.

I live in the St.Louis area. We have two chains here that are fairly local. Dierbergs and Schnucks.

Diergergs Toasted Oats, (Cheerios), Mini Frosted Shredded Wheats and Frosted Corn Flakes, I am positive are put out by Kelloggs. Dierbergs also has a great ice cream. The flavors are limited to vanilla, chocolate and perhaps a neopolitan, but the vanilla and chocolate are all we buy anymore. There is also an onion soup mix that is as good as any of the other brands. I think the brand on that is Flavorite.

I don't drink coffee, but my husband swears by the Schnucks brand Colombian coffee.

Almost all of these items are at least 1/2 the price of the name brand products and at least equal in taste and quality.

And we also hit TJ's for bread and eggs, if nothing else and of course there is always something else.

Great topic! My family really prefers Safeway's brand of Mozzerella Cheese and Colby Jack over brand names. When it goes on sale I stock up and freeze it.

I will eat pretty much anything Western Family. I think it's because my Mom always bought WF and now as an adult that what I know. There is only 1 local store here that sells it. I go out of my way for a few things like the canned and frozen fruit and veggies and the dairy.

My grandkids prefer Meijer mac and cheese over the kraft brand.
I see that others like a store brand too.

You have to wonder who makes the store brands of mac and cheese?

We like the WalMart brand of "Thick & Creamy" mac & cheese - but I buy both. I actually buy 3 kinds - some Kraft, some WalMart brand and some Annies brand. They like different flavors by each brand.

I very much prefer the Great Value brand (Walmart) of pop tarts than the real Pop Tarts. The GV brand seems to have more filling and they don't have the gritty granulated sugar on top of the frosting! Pop Tarts brand were on sale for $1.00 a box last week and I bought some. I ate one package and remembered why I liked GV pop tarts better! Needless to say, the pop tarts are in the pantry for anyone who wants them and MY GV ones are by my toaster!
