People who throw trash out their car window - GRRRRRR!

Okay we just had a discussion here at work and I am LIVID! Somehow we got on the subject of a certain guy being a "tree hugger". One of my co-workers (who I have had run ins with before!) said "oh geez he is a tree hugger." I was like "Uh so what?" "Oh", she says, "I always throw my trash out my car window. Drove my old boss crazy." I was like "Excuse me you do what? You can get a fine for that." She's says in her completely flip blatant attitude "so sue me".

NOW I would certainly not consider myself a tree hugger - my mental pic of that is someone who ties themself to a tree to stop construction, etc. BUT I do pick up trash along the county road we live on - we are pretty far out and it's amazing to me what people throw in the ditch. And HELLO PEOPLE save our earth!

So am I off the wall here? She was like just so "Yeah so what I throw my trash out the car window" that it just infuriates me more! By the way, the boss is wise to her flippant ways - it is carried out in everything!

Throwing trash out a window is weird!! Don't even know what to say about it, I just find it strange that people are so lazy that they throw garbage out the window of a car. Where do they think it goes?!? I probably would have went off on her if I were there!! Last year I was living in a small Idaho town of 2500 residents, and my daughter did a girl scout trash pickup one day, I couldn't believe some of the things the kids found!! People are inconsiderate, no matter where you are, you'll always find some winners!!

I read an article a while back about a company rep that came to town to look over a potential site for their business. Took a ride about the town and refused to locate in that town because there was too much litter along the roadways. To this company rep that meant the towns people had no pride.
What is so hard about hanging onto the trash and throwing it away in a trash can when a person reaches their destination? My family of four has allergies so Kleenex are a must have in the vehicle. I keep an empty Kleenex as a trash box in the vehicle. When it's full, toss the whole box in the trash and get another empty.
When DH was in high school he was pulled over on the way back from lunch. The passenger had thrown his trash out the window. The passenger received a ticket for littering.
To me, it's a state of mind or lack thereof to throw trash out the car window.

I will not throw trash out of the window.. You should take a good look at the inside of my car. It looks like a trash dump.
I am the only one that drives it, my hubby gets so mad at me at times, but what the hey! its my car and I don't throw out the window. If it wasn't 4 degrees outside I would go and clean it out.

That is right up there with the people who throw their cigarette butts out the window, or who stomp them out on the ground, squish them with their feet, and leave them there. No different, to me, than throwing trash on the ground, out the window, whatever.

I have learned that I can't change other people or enforce my beliefs on them. I just do MY part and set a good example for my children and others I encounter.

ETA: I have a small grocery bag, like the small freezer bags, hanging from the glove box. ALL trash goes in there, and it gets removed and replaced on a VERY regular basis. No trash gets thrown out of my car windows.

I would not be able to hold my anger back at that co-worker. Actually, a good way to prove a point would be to go to lunch or something and have her/him drive their car. On the way back, take a to go cup or box or something and then dump it out in their car and say "so sue me" LOL

Ok...that wouldn't be the best way to handle the situation but it's fun to think about

I don't understand car litterbugs either! You're obviously in transit somewhere and every business/home has trash cans. Why can't you just wait to arrive?

Nothing scares me more than when I'm driving on the highway and someone flicks a cigarette butt out the window. At high speeds (especially at night) it just looks like a small flickering flame headed straight at my car!

She might have just had a bug up her ass about something and knew by saying that it would get on your nerves. Don't let it bother you. At least you know that you are doing the right thing by not littering. I can't stand it when I see people throwing trash out car windows. I think that they are sloppy pigs. I especially hate it when people leave dirty diapers in parking lots. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. ~Lisa

I agree, I hate when people toss trash out of their car window!! I live on the side of a pretty busy street and it gets trashy around here! Whiskey Bottles, diapers... about 20 or so years ago right after AIDS was being talked about, there was about 10 or 12 hypodermic needles dumped in my yard!! :O

My ex had the messiest car I ever saw.. one summer we were going somewhere and I rolled down my passanger seat window and a piece of paper flew out! I said.. "Eddie, look, it's so trashy in here, even the trash wants out!"

In general, people are rude in tossing from a car window, leaving it in the seating area of an airport, leaving it all over at a company sponsored event, in a movie theatre, the list goes on. Just because it's convenient doesn't make it right, but people do do this all the time. I think maybe the co-worker caught your livid reaction and worked it. Or I hope so, that the co-worker wasn't that serious.

I just had to join in on this conversation. My husband who was riding his Harley one day (outfitted in full leathers) was behind a car full of teenage girls when all of the sudden a take out bag was thrown out. He decided to follow them very closely and kinda scare them and they pulled into a gas station about two miles up the road (with a trash can sitting right there!). He said he could tell they were a bit nervous when this "hell's angel type" guy came pulling up next them, He got off his bike walked towards them and said, " there is a $500 fine for littering in this town so if I were you I'd turn around and go pick up what you just threw out your window before I make a phone call to the sheriff". He said they turned around and off they went. He didn't follow them, but he didn't really think he needed to either.

I thought this was a great way to handle the situation. I don't think a one of these girls will ever litter again! At least I hope not.....

My kids are always wanting their windows down and they like to have a hand or stuff outside... talk about dropping stuff... I have to point out the landscaping and LACK OF TRASH in the area and getting fined for littering... doesn't stop them from trying though. My car is usually a little messy unless my husband cleans it out because when I have to carry a 20lb baby, often sleeping, my purse, and stuff I have to bring in (up 2 flights of stairs) I sure don't feel like grabbing an empty bottle or whatever to bring in for the trash can.

Ugh! Littering in general peeves me! I don't understand when you can find a trash can in any small radius. So you hold onto something in your car until you get to a trash can, everyone can do that! People are just lazy that do this.

That's just gross. I don't understand why someone would have the need to throw trash out the window. There are trash can EVERYWHERE. I gather my trash before I get out of the car and throw it away at the cans outside home/work/stores there is always one somewhere.

our rule is nothing goes out the window unless it is biodegradeable.. banana skin or apple core.. that is all that goes out .. and for those I 'pull over' and put them in the bushes for the possums and critters living there..

I agree.

DH's truck is always messy. He works hard, so I clean it out on occasion (last occasion being on Tuesday). Now it is sparkling!

My car gets messy, but I clean it up when I pick DS up from school, and it doesn't even get close to how messy DH's truck gets (my car could use a good vacuuming, but it is currently due for an oil change and they will vacuum it for me).

I get irritated to see the diapers, cigarettes, etc. dropped on the floor. And hate people throwing stuff out of their vehicles too. And I think because I am a non-smoker that the ash trays emptied in parking lots irritate me the most (well, right up there with dirty diapers).

I cannot fathom how people can be so sloppy. I would hate to see the inside of their cars and houses!! (Or their yards!!)

What a disgusting place it would be if everyone just threw all their crap out their windows!

The other day we pulled in to a spot at the drug store and there lay a dirty diaper. Exactly 4 ft from a trash can! What a LAZY person .

Ugh, it's really bad when you're glad it's only trash and not something burning. I have cut people off for tossing cigarettes out of the car, as much of a jerk as that makes me. If you feel okay throwing your trash at me, I'm not hanging out behind you to see what comes next.

I was always brought up to NOT throw trash out the window. Just keep a small plastic grocery bag in your car and put the trash in that. I've never understood why that is so hard for people to comprehend to do instead of just chucking it out the window.

Our house is on a corner lot by a stop sign. It seems like more people throw trash out their windows and it just seems to find its' way into our yard. Same thing with my mom's house too. It is so irritating. During the summertime it is almost a daily thing to let the dog out and then go pick up the trash that has been thrown in our yard.

I just don't understand people throwing trash out a car, or on the ground or anything.......For the car I keep spare walmart bags under a seat, and whenever we stop for gas the kids pass the bag around and collect the trash. Doing this has really helped the vehicle stay less messy......I even keep a walmart bag stashed at the bottom of my "purse" (it's more like a tote bag) for if the kids have trash while we're out, I just throw it in there and toss it when we get home, or pass a trash can.......

I handle the issue while I am filling up with gas I always use that time to clean out the car. There are always trash cans right next to the pumps and that is a great time to scour the car for anything that needs to go in the garbage. Kind of a nice little game to get the car picked up before the pump kicks off.

This has always been an issue in my famliy. My DH would almost stop the car & go back if someone threw something out the window when he ws driving. Our DD was brought up never to throw stuff out the car window. If a person can't empty out the car any other time, you can usually empty it out when you are at the gas pumps. Every gas place has large cans right there that you can use while the gas is pumping.

Like another poster, I live on a corner & people seem to think that is the best place to dump trash. Don't know why corners seem better than mid block.

Also don't like people that put oil in their cars at the shopping center where they buy the oil, then leave the empty container on the parking lot. People that leave behind dirty diapers. People that dump their full ashtrays in parking lots.

One time I was riding in the back seat of a car driven by my best friend. The a/c on the car wasn't working right so we had the windows down. She flicked a lit cigarette out the window. It blew back inside the car & landed on my lap. I was so mad at her. I just couldn't believe she would do something so stupid.

I'll get off my soapbox now...

I agree with you about throwing the trash out the car window. We also have a problem at our house. We live in the end of a row house and people walk by and just throw their emply soda cans or wrappers into our yard!!!!

On another note, could anyone please tell me how to do a post on this board? I am registered but I can't seem to find a link to do a new post. Thanks.

I already posted on this subject, but this morning there was an article about trash in the Denver Post. It is written by Frank Greve with McClatchy Newspapers, so some of you may get it in your paper too.

Anyway...it says that cigarette butts are the most common form of litter in the United States & the rest of the world.
Further in the article it says that in the state of Washington they have serious litter fines, including a fine of $1,025 for tossing a lit cigarette.

Maybe after one of those fines, some of the slobs will learn better.

I was a little girl in the 60s and a teenager in the 70s. People acted like the window hole was their own private trash can! My Mom hated it and would not allow us to throw things out the window or on the ground. She made us carry our garbage with us.

I remember one of my high school teachers Dr Ferguson (God rest his soul he was a genius) saying that people think it's okay to clean out your hairbrush and throw it out the window but if everyone did it the US would be covered with hair. I got it but some people did not.

This is one of my pet peeves. I can't for the life of me figure out how people justify littering to themselves. It's like having no respect for themselves or anyone else or their property.....and having no respect for the environment. I have actually heard some people justify throwing out soda cans as a "donation" to the elderly and others who go along roadsides to pick up the cans for deposit. Hello? If you're so darned philanthropic, why not turn the cans in yourself and make a cash donation! Grrrr...

I also can't stand vandalism for the same reason. Senseless destruction of places and things....

I recycle the plastic shopping bag just like you and keep it in the car for trash. On trash day, my husband gets in my car and takes it to the trash can for me before he takes the trash to the curb.

I don't understand why people litter-- it's just disgraceful.

I don't pass people when there isn't a safe distance to do so, but I avoid driving behind vehicles that are throwing off debris, whether it's lit cigarettes, gravel, or cardboard boxes. It's just that I make an effort to do so, when I wouldn't have otherwise. Is that any less disconcerting?

Someone I knew years ago told me this: he pulled into a store parking lot and the guy in the car next to him opened his car door and dumped the garbage from his car onto the parking lot. It consisted of wrappers, cigarette butts, and junk mail. After the litterer went into the store, the guy I knew picked it all up and put it in a big manila envelope and mailed it to the guy! (the junk mail had his address on it!).

A group I am involved with has boxes at local stores where people can drop off deposit cans/bottles, and then we return them (as a fundraiser).
One time, we had someone drop their bag of trash in there! Unfortunately for them, the person who had pickup that week was the son of a county judge - needless to say they checked the trash until they found a name.
Hopefully the person who dropped it off will think twice in the future.
