What a strang week...

On Tues., we had some unexpected ice on the roads. The kids school bus never came, the road outside of my neighborhood was a parking lot. A 5 min. ride turned into a two hour ride for many of the staff/students and our h.s. and middle school. The city really screwed up. The roads were frozen due to a bit of snow, then it drizzled a bit, creating black ice everywhere. A two hour delay should have been called-by 10am, the temps were over 50 degrees. I tried two times to take my kids to school-the first time traffic was just too heavy, so we turned around and came home for hot chocolate. I finally got them there around 9:45-school starts @ 8:15. When we got there, the office told the boys to go down to their classrooms, and if their teacher wasn't in the classroom, just to go to the class next door-not much of the staff had arrived by then. My one friend who is a teacher (and lives 5mins. away) left her house @ 7:30am. She arrived @ the school at 9:45-and there were only FOUR teachers in the school at that time. Ok, so a pain in the butt, but my freshman son came home later that day, and said that his baseball coach had been in a car accident-iskidded off the road, and hit a tree, and was in the ICU w/ a broken back, w/ less than a 1%chance of not being paralyzed. We hoped it was a bad rumor, but unfortunately, it was true. Well, that was a big story in the news, but one even worse than that was of a guy whose car died on a major road. He tried to walk across the road to get help, but a semi slid on ice and hit him, of course a fatality. The road was closed for hours-all over the news. They just released his name-I know him. I used to hang out w/ him quite a bit. He was my brother's best friend's roommate. My brother's best friend actually married one of my best friends-he is quite in shock. I haven't seen him in several years, but really, what an unsettling week. Two of the biggest news items this week--and I know them both. We are not in a one stoplight town-our population is about 600,000. It's just very surreal-in one morning, two families were changed forever.

I am sorry to hear about your week. Is the coach improving? I wonder why they didn't cancel school when the teachers didn't arrive?

How awful!!! You know we kinda make fun of our town shutting down if one snowflake falls but it's better to be safe than sorry, isn't it?

One of the teachers I work with her DD has St. Clair Jones for her special education class, Her DD stayed at the hospital a few days last week, from what she said alot of kids were up there. Her DD also said he wasn't wearing his seat belt and his airbag didn't deploy. The accident severed his spinal cord. After the operation they said 1% of walking and he is in rehab at the hospital already. They had a money raising deal for the teachers and I guess the public that were there at Crocs friday night. I'm sure they will have alot of fundraisers for him.

The other man, that was just crazy. seeing his car on TV knowing he made it out of that mess and then to get hit by that Coke truck when he was on the phone to 911 reporting his accident.

Did you see the school superintendent apologizing on the news? I bet downtown got tons of calls that day, I know I was one of the callers.

The city did mess up that day. The Superintendent came on the news saying that when they realized it was ice on the roads, the buses were already there. Now I wonder how his ride was when he drove into work that morning BEFORE the school buses left?? In NC the same thing happen and got the same excuse. If they come into work and can't make it until a couple hours later, you would think that they would get it in their heads that maybe its a dangerous situation. I was SO upset over this that morning and I was one of the callers they had too. (only on the NC side)

I heard about the coach, that's such a sad story. It was all over the news. He is a very popular coach there. I hope the doctors are wrong and everything will be okay.

The news of the guy getting out of his car to be hit by a semi was just devasting. I hope his family will be okay. They are in my prayers.

Linnybop, I hope this week gets better for you. If not, come on down to the Island, we'll grab a bottle of wine and drink till we can't remember!!...lol. Oh that would require too many bottles of Moonrise, we'll have to rely on Boones Farm....lol.

Yeah, it was all a mess that day! The coach is doing pretty well, considering. My son was at the hospital as well, and got to see him on Fri. He said he looked "normal" meaning no bruises/scratches/swelling on his face or anything. We have been getting really good updates from one of the other baseball moms, and there are a ton of fundraisers in the works, not just @Kellam, but even @some of the surrounding schools. I didn't hear the part about him not wearing his seatbelt....The good news is that he is a tough guy-the other day they gave him three hours of PT. After the three hours was up, he told the therapists to go take a break then come back and give him three hours more! lol...They said that he has actually gained a bit of sensation in the upper thigh area, but will know more when the swelling goes down. On day two after the accident, believe it or not, he was actually writing a practice schedule for the baseball team. So, if anyone can recover, this guy certainly is up to the task-he's pretty amazing! Just glad to see all the support from the community. As far as the school super goes, he is a weeny! I think they are going to be extremely cautious about ANY inclement weather from now on.

As far as the other accident goes, I can't even imagine that scenario. Another weird thing about that day, is that the guy who was killed, it was his wife's birthday that day-can you imagine?

Tammy Boo, I am fine-my family is safe and healthy right now; I've got no right to complain. You just kind of get knocked into perspective sometimes, and Tues. did it for me. But speaking of getting "knocked," I'm still up for the wine-we'll just hit up one of your neighbor's vineyards!
