doctor or not?

My 12 year old daughter ran her nose into her team mate's knee while diving for a volleyball in her game last night. As soon as she stood up, blood came gushing out of her nose. It took about 10 minutes for it to stop bleeding. the paramedics arrived, checked her out, and said it was up to us to take her home or to the doctor. My husband chose to take her home. It's still a bit swollen today, slightly, just slightly black and blue. Can't really see any signs of black and blue eyes right now.

Think it's broken? Besides ice, what else can we do for it?

With 4 children in sports, this is about the first time we encountered any injuries. We are not the type to run to the doctor for every little thing. (like a broken toe - all they can do is tape it to the next one and let it heal).

thanks in advance.

I broke my nose once (fell off of a bike). Nothing was done at the time, and I still have a bump (not terribly noticeable, but noticeable by me. For me, I wish something had been done, totally for cosmetic reasons of course. With a boy I wouldn't worry about it, but you might want to get your daughter's opinion.

When in doubt, always see your doctor. It may be nothing but if it is, you'll be glad you went!

Def - YES - If there is a break and they repair it with 72 hours insurance pays for the surgery - if not - it is done later - it is considered cosmetic and insurance will not cover it!

I say take your daughter to the doctor. I hurt my nose diving in a swimming pool. Years later, after continuous sinus infections, I was asked by the medical staff how I broke my nose.....I didn't even know it was broken. Deviated septum repaired & two sinus surgeries later, I suffer less from sinus problems.

I would take her to the doctor. I broke my nose many years ago and did not have it looked at. Now....many years later I have problems with headaches, partially caused by bone spurs in my nasal passages and I also have a deviated septum. If I had at least made a trip to the doctors when it happened, I might not be dealing with some of the issues that I have now!
