My poor DS has the flu...

Yuck..Its our turn for the flu.
My poor little DS. He is 9 and woke up this morning with a 102 temp.

He has not gotten off the couch all day other than to go to the bathroom. (He is normally a very active child)

He was eating ok this morning, but since about 4 he throws up everything he puts in his mouth, including tylenol for the fever!

How long should I let him go not being able to drink? He doesnt throw up unless he swallows something. (about 20 minutes after he takes a drink)

I am thinking I should call the doctor in the morning if he still cannot drink, what do you all think?

Do you mean the "stomach flu".

Seasonal Flu vs. Stomach Flu - What is the Stomach Flu

Try pedialyte if he can keep that down. It's full of electrolytes. Even a sip here and there will do wonders. Don't have him try to guzzle a bunch, it will just come back up. Seriously, try a teaspoon at a time.

Also, there's a medication called Emetrol that is for nausea. It's over the counter.

Keep an eye on his urine output. Also, increased heart rate, weak pulses, deep breathing, and cool, mottled extremities are a sign of severe dehydration.

Hope he feels better!

I'm thinking that yes you need to get a definitive diagnosis. He could have anything at this point.
Fever on top of the vomiting can lead to dehydration. I would definitely get in to the Dr. in the morning if he's still vomiting and running the fever.

Tepid/warm baths may help get the fever down.
You can get acetaminophen suppositories over the counter---I know it's not fun, but you may have to do it to get the fever down. Once you get the fever down, he may be able to keep some fluids down.

Thanks for the suggestions. He had a really rough night, ran a fever of 103 all night and couldnt keep anything down. I took him to the doctor this afternoon and he has the flu. They did a swab test in his nose. He still feels awful, but kept down some chicken soup a little while ago. The doctor said to keep him on liquids only today and tommorrow if he did well with liquids he could try very bland food.
He said this flu has been lasting about a week. He did give him a script for Tamiflu to see if we could shorten it a bit.
Thanks again

Tamiflu for a child?? OMG, you better read up on that. Your doctor shouldn't prescribe that for him.

I read some of the things on that already. He isnt taking it anyhow, he took one dose and said it tastes too bad. Since it was not something that he HAS to have, I did not force him. I did plan to ask the doctor about it, but since he is not taking it anyway, I will just ask next time we are in.
However, I will say that most drugs to have possible side effects that are pretty rare, but like I said, I was planning to ask. I feel very comfortable with my doctor.

From the site that ilovezingers posted:

"Is Tamiflu approved for use in pediatric patients?

Tamiflu is available in both capsule and liquid formulations. It is approved for treatment of influenza in children over 1 year of age."

Looks like it is fine for kids. McCartyJJ's Dr is great and I am sure he knews the correct dosage for her son.
