My poor son!

DS has had an earache, which is VERY unusual for him. Last night we noticed some blood coming from inside his ear! He has an appt in about an hour. Has anyone had this happen before? My childhood was full of nasty ear infections and I would have been deaf by age 9 according to one specialist if I had not had an operation. Even now at my age the dr's look in my ears and say "wow, lots of scar tissue!"
But I never remember having blood! That worries me.

Poor guy! It is possible he has ruptured that eardrum, which will cause a discharge of pus and/or blood. Don't panic--it will heal. Once they treat the infection, it should heal in a couple of weeks.

Hope he feels better soon--though if he ruptured the eardrum, it usually reduces the pain!

That happened to us once when my oldest was little (she had lots of ear infections - tubes twice, adenoids removed) - I can't remember if the eardrum actually ruptured or what, but it was no big deal. It was way more scary for us, but it didn't seem to bother her. Actually if the eardrum does rupture, it takes away the pain because the pressure is gone.

Well we are back from the Dr. Poor thing is in SO much pain. There is an infection and blisters and bleeding. Dr. said no rupture, but pretty bad blisters. DS's motrin wore off while we were there and he was in so much pain, they had nothing to give him, and I didn't think to bring any, so when we went in for the prescription I got a new bottle and opened it right up and gave him some there. He's on RX ear drops and an oral antibiotic as well. Thanks momshops and lisacb for your support, I appreciated it.

I hope your son feels better soon.

I don't blame you for opening up the motrin right there....I've done that too!

My dd had blood coming out of her ears a few times, but she had tubes in her ears and when she would get an infection it would bleed, but she did not have pain.

That is hard when their pain meds wear off while you are at the doctor. I have learned to take some with me.
Once when DD was a baby, she had a bad infection and was in a lot of pain. The doctor had prescribed drops to help with the pain. While I was waiting at the pharmacy for my meds, they were way backed up, the pharmacist called me over and said everything is not ready yet, but lets get that baby out of pain, and went ahead and put in drops in my dd's ear. She had beenreally crying hard. I was so grateful for him.

Bless his heart. I hope the meds help make him fell better. Keep that motrin "on board". It's going to be a long night for you.
