Unhappy Digital photos/printers...Help!

I have used digital cameras for years, freely admitting I am not the world's best photographer. I have a PictureMate printer which d/h bought me. I am going crazy trying to print my pix. I've had some issues before, but am usually just printing a couple of pix and never bothered too much about it.

The colors I see in my Picasa editing program in no way resemble what is coming out of my printer. All my photos are bleached out, or the color saturation is just off. I have done a test of the colors on my monitor, and they are correct. I have plenty of ink, good quality photo paper, and will need a lobotomy if I print one more awful photo. (The frugal side of me also cringes at every wasted sheet of paper & drop of ink!)

If anyone has some expertise in this and can give me some pointers to correcting my obvious lack of know-how, I would be very grateful!

Otherwise, watch out for flying photoprinters.

How old is the ink? I had the same problem with an HP photo printer that I had not used in awhile. New ink cartridges fixed the problem.

As a side note, don't delete the files after you print them. Home printed inkjet photos do not last -- they will fade over time. If you want your photos to last, you need to have them professionally printed (Snapfish, Walgreens, etc.).
