Southern Tornadoes, Were you affected?

I have been away from the computer and Tv all day and I just saw over 54 people lost their lives yesterday due to the Southern Tornadoes. How did you, your family and your towns fair during the horrible storms yesterday?

My family, friends and myself are fine. The tornado hit about 5 miles down the road from me. I went to sleep around 11:00 pm after warnings for our area expired. They kept talking about a second storm coming through but I thought it was in a different area. My friend(who lives about a mile or so from me)told me today that the second one hit at 1:00 am and she had her family in the hallway. My kids and I slept through it. Scary to think it hit so close and I was oblivious to it. Today I saw the pieces of metal wrapped around poles, wood from buildings everywhere, trees that looked like they've been "chewed" up and a truck that was in a field, grass and mud stuck to the top and you can tell that it's been flipped on it's top and side but it now sits upright in an empty field.
So scary. We had a tornado almost 2 years ago, hit about 1 mile from my mom and dad's house. They watched it pass above their home. We knew people that were killed by that. When I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, I worked downtown Nashville and watched a tornado pass by my office window. I've seen enough damage and devastation from tornadoes to last the rest of my life. My thoughts go out to those who've lost family, friends, homes and memories.

That one in Nashville.. '98? We were in Madison at the time and my husband wanted to go to Nashville for something.. I don't remember if he did... I was pregnant and home that day and pretty scared but all we got was a little hail if that.

We didn't get the storms here in GA but I think one might have hit a few miles up the road from where we used to live (just read that there was a tornado there but haven't read anything since so if it DID, it must have been minor). My parents are still up there.. I remember when we lived a few mins away from them, there was a siren going off and I called to make sure they knew.. and they were upstairs in bed, not caring lol.. they just said, if it comes oh well.

I did the same thing (went to sleep when they said the worst was over). Turns out one went right over us. I was so sick/tired that I slept through it. Dh thought it was the base (sounded like helicopters to him).

My kids were so tired and jittery yesterday. Of course they had a big state writing assessment...

Yes it was in 98. I can't forget that because I was 7 months pregnant! The weather that year was crazy. About a month or 2 before the tornado, I was home sick and we had the worst hail storm ever. Hail the size of baseballs!

I'm surprised your county had school. Did your area not get a lot of flooding or damage? I know they said schools were closed because of flooding in my county but I think that was a secondary reason since so much of the county had major tornado damage and the power plant that got hit was in my county. My friend said you could see the orange glow from her house, which is about a mile or less from my house. I missed it all. I heard all the sirens but never went outside to see what was going on.
School's back in today though.

Hi everyone...I read alot but have only posted a few times. I am in Williamson county in Tennessee and we are still out of school due to the tornado. We are very rural and out of the city limits. Just our elementary school however is still out, the middle and high schools are back in session. My husband saw the tornado come across our back field. I was taking cover in the basement. I am posting asking for everybody to please send prayers to everyone hit by this storm. Not just in my area but the south as a whole. It missed my house by a mile but alot of my neighbors and friends are left with nothing. No one here however lost their life so we are so very grateful for that. Our little elementary school only holds 130 kids so alot of those kids and their families have been affected in our area. So they need lots of prayers that they can get back on their feet. Thanks so much you guys, I do love to come here and read. Maybe I will make a point to post more often. Hopefully not on such a bad topic. Take care!!

We are in NE Mississippi, thank God it didn't hit us. About 10 miles up the road a tornado was spotted but never touched down, they did have baseball size hail that did allot of damage.

I just saw a miracle story on the news about the baby that was found 300 feet away from her home. She was found alive and well. A tornado apparently lifted her 300 feet away. I couldn't imagine what the mother felt and went through when she couldn't find her child. I'm a mother of two and I had tears in my eyes wondering what I would do if I was in her shoes. I know she's the luckiest woman in the world to be reunited w/her child. This is truly a miracle!!

Is that another story about them finding a baby? The one I heard about the mother was dead.

It would be so hard to not know where your children are!!

I'm glad you're ok too. Did it hit Rutherford Co. at all? I was thinking that it was headed that way at 11:00 pm when I turned off the TV but I can't remember for certain.

I remember hearing there was 2 different children.
The one they talked more about locally was the 11 month old little boy found across the street(I think)and his mother did die.
I remember hearing about another child found but didn't hear the details.
They showed on the local news tonight, a woman in Vanderbilt Hospital with a broken back, her husband had something broken but her little girl was ok. She said they got into the bathtub, she put the little girl on the bottom, she got on top of her to shield her and then her husband got on top of the 2 of them to shield them. They're going to be OK and felt lucky to just have broken backs/bones. It's all very sad. Each day you hear another story, another miracle, a fatality or a family who lost everything and it never gets any easier to hear. (except the happy outcomes or miracles) I can only imagine how families who were directly affected must feel as they deal with the after math. Although the tornado from a couple of years ago looked horrible and was horrible, this tornado was so much worse, more deaths and more destruction.

We didn't even have tornado warnings. It just got a little windy (well, really a lot windy; it moved a VERY heavy gazebo about 2 feet over) but we are so grateful we didn't get more!

Yes, this is the same sad story. Yesterday, when I first saw the story on the news my kids were loudly playing and I couldn't hear the t.v. too good. I got bits and pieces of the story. I saw the story again this morning on the news, without interruptions, and saw that the baby was found 300 feet from his home and the woman looking for him was a female relative. The mother was found dead. This is such a heartbreaking story.

Hmm... I just saw this news story (about the baby) on the Clarksville news site (still keep up with it even though we've moved..) and saw it was in Castalian Springs... which I think is where my SIL and her dad live? I think it's near Gallatin which was torn up a couple years ago.. same storm that our car has some hail damage from? Not sure where SIL is, left a message on her MySpace about my husband being in the hospital and made sure she had his cell number but she hasn't been on. Had never heard of that town but that's where so many of her friends appear to be from, we just considered her living in Gallatin.

Castalian Springs is close to Gallatin. I think it's a different county but a neighboring one. I hope your SIL is ok.

If anyone wants to read stories relating to the storm or see pictures/videos you can go to www.tennessean.com | | news, community, entertainment, yellow pages and classifieds. Serving , and check it out. That's the Nashville newspaper website.

Yes they are! There's a picture of the 11 month old boy with his mom. (he's the one who survived and was found across the street or field from his home but his mom died) Seeing that picture just made it more real. And the girl's fiance was saying how the 11 month old(his name is Kyson)will probably now go to live with his biological father and that along with losing his fiance is devastating to him. Just so sad. So many people affected in so many different ways.
