Does your kid break out in hives?

Mine has started to recently. He does have asthma, but this hives thing has been just the past few weeks. It must be something he's eating that he's just now showing an allergic reaction to (or at least I hope it is). Can a person be allergic to sugar? It seems that if he eats something sweet, here come the welts and bumpy rash. It looks really bad, and we just have to wait for it to clear up. It gets really bad on his arms and even though he tries to wear long sleeves, it rubs the rash and causes oozing. We don't get to see the allergist for another 2 weeks. He's 11.

Wow! The causes of Hives can be really hard to figure out sometimes.....I have one who was breaking out all the time, and it took us forever to eliminate everything so we could find the cause.....Is he eating anyting relatively new? Are you using any new soaps, shampoos laundry detergant's or fabric softener? Do you have a water softener? (new chemical mix maybe?) Anybody wearing a new perfume? Has he been around anyone new? I hope he finds some relief soon, poor guy!

My 8 year old dd broke out in hives after taking amoxicillin for strep.
Strange though, she had taken amoxicillin several times in the past with no problem. She is now considered "allergic to penicillin" too bad, because that is such a widespred, useful, affordable drug!!

Since he has asthma, my guess would be a food. They will probably test him for top 8 food allergies (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish and shrimp). If he is miserable maybe give him Benadryl. It's a staple in our house. We have the stuff stashed everywhere!

My DD (17)last year broke out with hives for a few week/months I cant remember, but they treated her
with a allergy medicine it kinda worked but we tried a food journal and thought it was (hot sauce)
she eats it with everything....... but it ended up just going away, the dr said we could have her tested
but we may never find out .
They did want to try steriods but I declined. This year she doesnt have any hives and she has more stress
Job, college stuff and school, sports .

I have had hives every day for at least the last 4 years. I take meds to be able to deal with the itching. I have been tested for everything under the sun and nothing comes up. The only thing we've come up with is it's stress induced. It's actually got a name for having them for so long, chronic utic.. something I can't remember now. I take and insane milligrams of zantac at one time plus claritin. When I miss a pill or something has me agitated I take an Allegra and that helps in combination with the other meds to calm the hives back down.

Mine has never oozed though. Poor thing I know he is just miserable.

My son breaks out sometimes, In the spring and summer he breaks out from grass, weeds etc.. A couple winters ago he broke out really bad in December. We to this day have no idea what broke him out. We had to put him on a steroid to get rid of it. 2 weeks later it came back and we had to put him on it again. We stopped putting anything on his skin, other than dreft and Ivory soap. A couple months later we started adding things back, but nothing else broke him out, so we have no idea what it was. I definently do not like him on steroids, but at the time, was not sure what else to do. He really made him Hiper and he can be anyway!!!!

Maybe it's not the sugar, but the high fructose corn syrup, aka corn allergy. My son has several food allergies and corn is the only one that causes a skin rash. Check your labels, it is in everything! Good luck until your allergist appointment. And on the Amoxicillan allergy, this can happen at anytime at any age!!! I was 18 and taking amoxicillan and broke out flushing from head to toe which then turned into itchy hives EVERYWHERE!!!!! The ER had the hardest time figuring out what was wrong with my because I had taken penicillan antibiotics many times before with no problem. That's when I was told it can develop at anytime. Years later I had an even more severe reaction to sulfa antibiotics. Just be careful, and don't give antibiotics unless REALLY NECESSARY.

Mine, too...when she was 2. She's 12 now and also allergic to Bactrim. She had huge nasty hives that took several days to go away after we stopped the medicine.

She breaks out occassionally now. It was happening a lot this summer. The doctor told us to keep a food log for 3 weeks of everything she ate and when she broke out. She got tired of doing it after a few days, but we think it may have been fresh peaches. I guess we'll see when they come back in season in a few months!

She just deals with them. She takes Benadryl if it really bothers her, but usually doesn't do anything.

My oldest DS has asthma and used to break out in hives if he ate or drank anything with red food coloring. We figured it out after a couple of incidents--it was his Friday treat of Code Red Mountain Dew one week and then Grapico the next. Sure as anything he'd start breaking out after he'd gotten halfway through the can.

We treated him with Benedryl and that would usually clear him up--but it always ended up knocking him out, too.

He's on Singulair now and that makes a huge difference in his allergic reactions and asthma attacks.

My oldest ds has broken out from amoxicillin and bactrim, both times were when he was around 2 yrs old.

There's been a other times he's randomly developed hives. We've never been able to pinpoint a cause. I keep benedryl with us at all times.

You should ask your parents to take you to an allergist and see if they can pinpoint the problem.

For some people, stress can cause hives. When my son was little he would sometimes get them when he was upset. I have a fiend that breaks out whenever she's nervous.

Benedryl is pretty much the best otc remedy for hives. Ask your parents before taking anything.
