I'm presently typing something for work..Each time I try to correct a misspelling by inserting a letter, it starts to erase the whole word and messes up the rest of the sentence..Any ideas what has gotten clicked on?? Usually I can just insert a letter and go on..thanks..

Do you have the "insert" key on? It works like caps lock. If it's one way, it takes out the word and the other way, it lets you insert a letter

glad I could help. I remember when I took a computer class in 1993 (which is all but outdated now LOL), that was the #1 thing we should learn because like you said, people don't know what it is or that's it's there. I remember driving an hour to my boyfriends house back then because he "computer was eating his essay" or something like that and it was the insert button LOL

I was SO excited that I actually knew the answer to this!! Just had to let someone know.......I am almost computer illiterate.

I actually pried that key out of my keyboard. Seriously, we need to just stop putting it on keyboards.

What is the purpose of that key anyway? Anyone know?

Insert is used in word processors, etc. it changes the default to either type over the next character or to insert before the next character.

Most programs do not use it now.... It was mostly for older models..
