Absolutely horrible news! I heard about this a couple of hours ago and now they are featuring it on Nightline. He is a former student. That is all they are releasing about him. Sounds like they had a good notification system perhaps averting more injuries.

What a sad epitaph on today's society, no place is safe...not schools, not malls. etc....

I work at NIU and I can tell you I was scared to death! The director of the office next to mine came down, closed our door, and said "We are on lockdown. There has been a shooting at Cole Hall." That's all I heard. Until they called and said "THEY WANT EVERYONE OFF CAMPUS NOW!" We watched ambulances from towns that are not really close to us coming down the street ... which made it even scarier, because we really didn't know what was going on ... but if ambulances from towns 50 miles away were coming, it wasn't a good thing.

5 innocent kids killed for what reason? I just don't understand this! I'm still shaking, and I'm sorry if this is incoherent. It was one building away from me and it affected me A LOT! Please say prayers for those who were taken from us for no apparent reason.

Ifaivre, this is such horrible news. I was completely engulfed in the news when I heard it on WBBM about 3:20pm. Actually, I heard it on ZOK first, then turned to BBM to see what was going on, because ZOK only had bits of information and didn't know much.
My heart stopped. My schedule got messed up this week, but I was to be in that area yesterday working. I normally head down Annie Glidden, or head through the area where Cole Hall is when I travel between stores. But nothing, nothing that I would have seen, or experienced, can even compare to what those poor kids and the staff went through that were in or near Cole Hall.

Linda, I am so sorry you were affected by this. It does make me so sad to think that our world is just so crazy and so many people are hurt for senseless reasons. It doesn't make sense. I hope they find out a motive, or what influences the shooter was under, that he made the decision that he did. So tragic.

All I could think about was the parents of these young people who's lives have been taken. Here we are, celebrating Valentines Day, and forever this holiday will represent a day of so much hurt, loss and pain for so many. My heart grieves for these families.

Linda, one thing that wasn't clear on the reports, that you might be able to answer, is the professor and assistant okay?

As far as I know, the professor and assistant are OK, but details are still a little sketchy. I do know that there are now 6 victims (plus the gunman) that have died. ABSOLUTELY SENSELESS!!! What in the world is going on in this world?

OhhGodd, I'm so glad your schedule got messed up for the week. It was absolute chaos out there on Annie Glidden.

When many of us were growing up, a scenario like this would almost be unheard of. Today, unfortunately, we're like, "oh no, another shooting in a school or campus". Some drastic steps need to be taken regarding gun control. It's just too easy to acquire a gun these days.

You are so right about the reaction that we all have. It is becoming such a complacent issue.

Just the simple fact that there are only 6 replies on this thread, takes me aback, and really does show that we are becoming used to such tragedy in our world.

Where do we, as a society, decide what is sensational, and what is not? Peterson has received much more concern and interest than I think this situation has, and it makes no sense to me. Is it all about the shock factor?
I just don't see how that could be more shocking than what happened at NIU and other schools around the US.

No, we don't need 'drastic steps' to be taken regarding gun control. We have the laws in place and background checks. Obviously he was like Cho and his psych records weren't public record. That's what needs to be changed. I guess since the guy in New York hacked up that psychiatrist this past week with a meat cleaver and attacked another psychiatrist, too, we should probably do background checks on people who purchase knives and meat cleavers, too, or take drastic steps to make sure people can't acquire these weapons.

I'm just saying that if someone wants to kill, they're going to find a way to kill.

It is horrible that this happened. I'm so glad it wasn't 32 like at Tech. The Tech community is holding a memorial on Monday for the victims of the shooting from last week and they've put a Hokie stone painted in the school colors of NUI at their memorial for the April 16th victims.
