Anyone else crochet or knit?

Just wondering if anyone else here does this. I hate to think this fine craft is going to the wayside. I crochet lots of lapthrows for my clients and donate them to the shelters and the nursing homes. Its a great stress buster and its something you can do while watching tv. Just wondering if anyone else does this?

I love to crochet......I have been teaching my oldest DD how to do it. I would love to learn how to knit, that is actually my goal for this year. Some of my fondest memories of my Grandma are the days we spent where she was teaching me how to crochet!

I do I do!

I LOVE to crochet baby afghans for any friends/family that has a baby. I used to knit when I was a little girl, but I gravitated towards crocheting. I've been thinking lately, I'd love to re-familiarize myself with knitting.

I like to do counted cross-stitch too, and some other crafts. I have two felt stockings I need to work on for Christmas next year, one for me, one for my husband. Felt appliques, sequins, beads, etc.

I have some watercolor pictures (Thomas Kincaide designs) to do as well.

Unfortunately, I don't have much time to do it as much as I'd like. I'm one of those people that NEEDS a creative outlet. Hopefully when I'm done with the current course I'm taking, I can figure in some more time for it.

Good question, OP!

Me Me!!!

I love to crochet. I got started years ago making blankets for babies that came into the foster care system with nothing of their own. Now I make blankets for everyone that is having babies and also for friends as gifts.

I love doing it and it is very stress relieving for me. I sit, watch tv or a movie and just crochet the whole time.

I am semi self taught. My mom tried to teach me but gave up when she couldnt show me what she wanted me to do. I am left handed and it just made it more difficult for her. I then just watched her and learned about 4 stitches. I cant read patterns but I dont really want to learn. I like to make my own pattern and just repeat it. If I had to count stitches it would be much more stressful for me.

It seems knitting is alive and well, considering how many of the moms in my due date group knitted their babies stuff. I never really learned to crochet but used to play with it, and a couple months ago I bought some knitting needles and yarn and sort of learned to knit and purl but haven't touched them since basically learning lol.. I'd love to knit sweaters for the little one!

I learned to knit one kind of stitch last year. Now I'm addicted to the ONE thing I can do! I'm also a lefty - very hard for my mom to teach me. I don't do it well, but I enjoy it!

Wanted to mention that A C Moore has "magic scarves" on clearance for $1.00 - our store has tons! They are actually so soft, and I'm considering buying extra to rip and reuse the yarn!

I knit and crochet, but nothing complicated, just things like scarfs, doll blankets, afghans, pot holders, no complicated stitches or anything. My mom taught me when I was a kid, I taught my youngest DD last year.

I also sew, and throw on a potters wheel for hobbies too. Also taught my 12 year old to do those things too.

I crochet a lot for friends and I used to crochet baby afghans for a non-profit group that helps families , I donated them to the local Hospital for needy families and at one time I also donated burial gowns I crocheted to the hospital for woman who lost their babies. I used to crochet "Cancer Bunnies" as a Fundraiser for our local hospital's Cancer Centers Chairty fund. As my diseases progress its harder for me to complete projects in the same amount of time as before, I could crochet 5-6 baby afghans in a good week and now it takes me two weeks (sometimes more) to do one all depends on if its a good week with my hands.

I have never mastered knitting nor can I seem to figur out quilting.

I cross-stitch, do plastic canvas and other crafty things mostly giveaways now used to sell stuff was hoping to this spring but since I had to get a real PT job I dont have time or energy to do anything for craft shows.

It is sad to see some of these old time "skills" go by the wayside I learned to crochet from my Aunt Jennie who will be 90 this year and from a Korean Girl in my 4th grade class and I have never stopped. DS does Plastic Canvas its supposed to help with his Dysgraphia and he wants to learn to crochet so after tax season I will try to teach him.

I crochet and have made a lot of nice things.
I can knit some but not well and I go back to the crocheting.
It just goes so much faster.

Yes, I am impatient.

I can crochet, but don't like it much. I love to knit and sew - I like to knit funky socks and sew renaissance fest garb.

For a wedding shower gift, I recieved a very nice crochet'd (using doily thread??) our last name matted and put in a frame. It had to take my aunt a very long time but its still hanging on the wall after all these years. I have seen these at craft shows and they sell for $5 a letter. I'm not sure where the pattern is, but if your into homemade gifts - this is a great one!

You all just inspired me to start yet again to learn to crochet. I used to make chan=ins and single stitch with my mom, tried it again a few years ago but never quite got the turns right. I always ended up with a triangle shape! I can do chain, single and double stitches just fine, but those darn ends make me crazy!

I went on youtube and found a few videos- much easier than following drawings and pictures. The Knitwitch has the most clear explanation for me. Just taught my dd to do a chain stitch and single stitch. She's all pumped up too. She went to bed crocheting.

My grandmother was terrific at crocheting. She made doilies, table cloths, bedspreads, wall hangings, etc.... She could make anything. She even crouched the Last Supper in a big wall hanging. She mostly used the thread but made a few afghans with yarn. We would paint a room and I would call her and ask for doilies to match the new paint color. She died 8 years ago and really miss her. At least I have enough doilies to last the rest of my life. LOL I just don't starch them like she used to. The only thing I can crochet is fridge towels.

I really don't think the old crafts are going by the wayside. The yarn sections in the craft stores are always packed with people picking out yarn. I think it's become popular again. I quilt, crochet and knit and after making things for family and friends it is most satisfying to make items for charity. I've taught both my son and daughter, although after childhood only my daughter continued, lol. My dd is 19 and knits and crochets, and actually started a small business making "shabby chic" quilts that she sold and used the money to go on a mission's trip.

But I really believe there has been a resurgence of knitting and crocheting---especially if you see all the new fiction novels that are out. (As well as quilting novels.) "The Friday Night Knitting Club" is a new novel I've just finished and has just been made into a movie with Julia Roberts and it due out in June 2008!

I crochet, knit, cross-stitch, sew and quilt. Of all of those, I prefer to knit or cross-stitch. Every new baby born into the family gets a cross-stitched Christmas stocking as their first Christmas gift from me. Also I knit alot of baby afghans. Hubby is in the military and someone is always pregnant where ever we go. This last tour here alone (3 years), I've knitted and given away almost 20 afghans. LOL! It takes me about 2 weeks to knit one since I usually only knit in the evening while we are watching TV.

My great-Grandmother taught me to crochet and my Mom taught me to knit and sew. I'm always doing some kind of project.

My 19 year old can knit and crochet.
I like to crochet, never learned how to knit. I love to sew tho. If anyone is really bored you can see some stuff I have made here mindid/fabric - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I think I made all of the clothes in there except the red dress, I just made the leggings to match.

When my son (now an adult) was toddler, my grandmother tought me to crochet.

At the same time she did "Broomstick Lace" for herself and made my son a big afgan.
My little boy's comment was
"Why did Grandma make me a blanket with holes in it?"
Needless to say I didn't bother learing the loose "Broomstick Lace" method of crochet

She was left handed and I was right handed so I did buy some printed instructions too.

During the 70's my friends and I must have crocheted tons of afgans, shaws, hats, mittens and scarves.
My son refused to wear the crocheted vest I made him so began making them just for me!

Then life got in the way and my crochet fell by the wayside.

In the 90's I developed sore wrists from computer use.
I found crocheting in the evening made them feel a great better.

That's right, crocheting does excercise the wrist in an opposite motion from computer use!
I crocheted myself 2 very nice afgans that I still use today.
That was all because it's all I needed and the cost of yarn had gone so high!
Buying a thorw was cheaper than making an afgan but the wrist excercise really did help me a lot at the time.

This winter I picked up my crochet hooks agian and made myself 3 new winter scarves.
The reason was I wanted new winter scarves and the cost of the yarn was less than the cost of good scarves.

I never bothered to find out how to knit since crocheting did what I wanted to do.

My mother used to crochet with thread but I never did that.
From thread she crocheted doilies and nice really nice Christmas decorations like angels and snowflakes.
