Best places to eat across the country

I love watching "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" on the Food Network. Well watching that shows makes me wonder, what place(s) have you eaten at that you would recommend to anyone. My DH drives semi and I often ride with him across country and we stop at a lot of neat food places.

Some ideas from NJ

If you like hot dogs with potatoes peppers and onions, I would suggest Jimmy Buffs in NJ they are on RT 22 (not sure of the city but they are right outside of Bocraft amusement park) *****Edited, I googled it, the city is Scotch Plains, but they also have locations in East Hanover and West Orange

Pizza --- Scorrintinos in South Amboy

Burgers-- Cheeseburger in Paradise

My dad also drives, so I will give him a call and ask him if he can recommend any places, altho he will probably tell me truck stops

Edited some other places I thought of...

Harolds NY style deli in Edison (I think they may also have another NJ location) The food is portioned for 2 but very yummy

Roadside diner in Wall NJ ( Bon Jovi used it for the cover of Crossroads)

Nonnas Italian family restaraunt on rt 9 in Ma*****o

Menlo Park Diner Edison

Reo Diner Woodbridge

I will edit again if i think of more

Primanti Bros. in Pittsburgh. It has the BEST sandwiches! It's always rated as one of the best restaurants for sandwiches in the country.

Any In-N-Out is good. When we were telling disgusting stories from previous jobs, the coworker who'd worked there had nothing to say, which seemed like a good sign, and the food is excellent. They're in CA, NV, AZ only.

Old Smoky's breakfast place in Williams AZ is excellent, and a good place to stop when visiting the Grand Canyon. It's cheaper to stay there than in Flagstaff, too.

In California try the Tommy's Burgers in San Pedro. We loved it when we lived there, its an order at the window and eat at the picnic table or take it to go place, but it is terrific!

Jimmy Buffs and Hot Dog Johnny's are two different places. (Maybe I misunderstood your post)
Hot Dog Johnny's is about 5 minutes from my house and I just don't understand the appeal -- they're not that good and they serve buttermilk (blech) . I think lots of people grew up going there and so they have great memories of it. I ate at Jimmy Buffs once -- that was enough. It was good but talk about unhealthy! Everything was deep fried and dripping in grease.

I love Five Guys for a good burger.

Five Guys-it's a burger place, and there aren't too many of them as of yet. I know of locations in Washington DC, Northern VA, and PA but there could be more by now.

They have the best burgers and fries. The burgers are not fancy but they are great-big patties of real beef that is never frozen. The fries are made in peanut oil and still have the skins on. If you ever stop in one, get a small/jr. burger(I recommend cheese, bacon, bbq sauce on mayo on it)and get a large fry-the fry order is huge and will easily feed 2 people.

Five Guys is no frills but they know how to make a mean burger!

Honestly, I think the best place to stop for a meal on any given day is at the home of ShoppinAZ who posts some of the most awesome meals on the LGC board and his website. Everyday something above and beyond the call of kitchen duty! Oh, and there are several other great cooks over there who'd I'd chose over a commercial kitchen any day!

But besides that, I make it my personal mission to try BW3s in every city I visit that has one!

I know it's a chain, but Cheesecake factory has the best food! Everything on it's menu is SO good, and it's a LARGE menu! Plus then there is the cheesecake! Also, in SLC there is a place called Rodizio Grill, (it's in Denver too) it's a Brazillian grill where they bring the meat around on big kabobs and cut you off slices of ALL kinds of meat. That on was really good, and pricey too!

I have to make myself NOT go to Five Guys for their fries. Their fries are soooooo good.

I like Foster's also. Their chicken cheesesteaks are SOOOO good.

Here in Manassas, there's a place called Dave's Chicken & Seafood. MMMMM!!! The BEST fried chicken wings!

If you're ever in WAYYY south Alabama, try Mary's Place in Fowl River for local seafood. It is close to several fishing areas, and it is all FRESH. You would really have to try it to believe it. Also, Original Oyster House on the Causeway is killer. You can't beat the seafood down here.

Like 30 + years ago my grandparents use to take me to Tony Packos in Toledo, Ohio. I have such great memories of the food there. I have not been there since. I dont know if it was the food or just the memory I have of being with my grandparents who have long ago passed away. I am planning on makeing a trip up there this summer to see.
If anyone has eaten there more recently can you please tell me if the food is as good as my memories

I do remember all the pictures of famous people on the walls. But the last time I was there I was around 10yrs old. I can't wait to go back again.

Alton, Ill. Fast Eddies Bon Aire. Opens at 1 PM until I don't know when. Get there at opening or you might have a wait most days. It's a true dive, but great and cheap food. You can't go in if you are under 21. Bugers, ($1), fries, peel and eat shrimp, chicken kabob, pork kabob, beef kabob. They may have onion rings also, not sure. I think I just covered the entire menu. The most expensive thing on the menu is the beef kabob and that I think is under $2. It's called the Big Elwood. Generous amount of spiced beef and green peppers on a skewer. The other kabobs are a little smaller and run about $1.30 or so. Peel and eat shrimp are 25 cents each. Drinks are very reasonable.

Alton is just north of I 70, up river from downtown St. Louis. Worth the trip. Fast Eddies is famous for a reason. In fact, it was a stop for Alton Brown when he did his show on his motorcycle a year or so ago.

If you are in St. Louis proper, go to what's called "The Hill" around here. It's an area dominated by Italian families and Italian run restaurants. Almost any of them are really good. Zia's, GianTony's, are two favorites.

If you are near the brewery, there is a great place called Fraziers Traveling Brown Bag. Often people call it Fraziers or The Brown Bag, not the whole thing. Great menu, with a nice mixture of upscale type items, without the upscale prices, and downscale items, all prepared in the kitchen. It's just west of the brewery but it's one of those "you can't get there from here" places. You have to get to it from the other side of the highway that runs north and south along the edge of the brewery. There's a walking bridge, so the people at the brewery can get there but driving is a no go from that side. Also, I'm not sure they take credit cards. They didn't used to.

Edited to ask. What places do you like? You may have a found places that we aren't aware of in our area. Are there places that you just can't miss when you're on the road?

Last edited by wildwood; 03-04-2008 at 04:24 PM. Reason: Edited again. I was at Fast Eddies the other day and it seems that they are now opening at 11 AM

We were in Long Beach recently and ate at Bubba Gumps.
It was fun and the food was good!
In Missouri, we love Lamberts.
In Louisville, KY area, Buckheads and Rocky's are great!
In Florida, try The Roaring Twenties in Ellenton.
The food is good, but the Theater Organ is GREAT!
I love Whataburger in New Mexico and Arizona. (maybe California and Texas too? can't remember and I was just there!)

If you are ever in Atlanta let us know. There are so many amazing places around here. If you like to try great ethnic foods we have just about anything you could crave. There are some really great Indian, Japanese or Ethiopian places. I agree Doc Chey's is great for noodles.

Other classics in the area to try .....

The Varsity-chilli dogs, onion rings and a frosted orange. (the french fries are good too)
The colonade-veggie plate to clear the arteries after the grease from the Varsity.

Outside of Springfield MO, Lambert's Cafe! Home of the Throwed Rolls! TO DIE FOR!!!

My last visit to Arizona about a year and a half ago, I was staying at the Marriott in Mesa. Anyway, I found out ther ewas an In N Out a clip away from the hotel.
I asked if their shuttle would take me there. Sure enough, NO PROBLEM!
I could have died and went to heaven. This is absolutely the BEST place to get a burger in the whole world! I wanted to take it all home! lol

Upon arrival back, I was given a bill for $50 for the ride to and from In N Out. I was completely shocked and was like.> Oh crap, hubby is going to KILL me. LOL

That was the most expensive Burger I have ever had, lol, But worth EVERY penny! (I even bought a T Shirt while I was in line..LOL)

They're at least as far south as Richmond, because we have a couple here.

Be prepared for mega-grease if you get their burgers and fries. SO greasy. We don't like it, but if you don't mind a real oil-bath, it's a lot of food for a good price.

On the drive from Phoenix to Las Vegas at just about the half way point in Wikieup AZ on Hwy 93 is a place called Eat at Joe's. It's a BBQ joint that has great food and often times entertainment.
Home Page

And in Flagstaff is Beaver Street Brewery a brew pub with good micro brews and food reasonably priced.

I haven't been to Mastoris in a while -- my SIL was involved in a horrible accident there trying to get out (IIRC, it kind of sits on an island almost, in the middle of the highway?). Very good place, though -- and huge!

Although I'm not sure there's such a bad thing as a bad NJ diner, is there? I've enjoyed the Galaxy in Rahway (?), the Red Star near Princeton and The Princeton Diner itself. There used to be one up on Route 17 north of Paramus that was good, but darned if I can remember the name.

I love watching Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, too. Y'all are mentioning alot of great sounding resturants. It's like MyCoupons version of the show. LOL My favorite place to eat is Dwyer's Cafe, a locally owned and operated diner. Everything is made from scratch....the omlets, biscuits, hashbrowns, burgers, etc. They even have homemade plate lunches of cajun cuisines like: crawfish ettouffee, fried shrimp or crawfish w/fries, crawfish fettucine, etc. It's been open for over 50 years and run by the same family who opened it!! It's a great place to hangout w/your family and kids. Great view of downtown area and a great atmosphere. A must-stop place if you're in the area. It's located in downtown Lafayette, LA. The food is to die for!! The prices are awesome too. My family of four eats there for breakfast for right around $20.00!!!

Hey, I've probably passed your house, then! My mother grew up on W. Scott Avenue , one block over from the Rahway River, right near Roosevelt Park and her sister still lives there. My father worked at the Chicken Delight (?) on St. Georges and my mother also used to go to meetings at the Girl Scout house! I still can't believe Huffman Koos is gone . . .

One of my favorite places is in San Antonio. It's a Mexican place called La Fogata. We don't get down there very often, but we eat there every time we're near.

I have kin in both Prescott and Chino Valley and we have been saying it's time for a drive out that way. My SO would like to do some photographing in Prescott and/or Jerome. We will be sure to check out Prescott Brewing as brew pubs are always our favorites.
And that should sound strange coming from someone that doesn't drink beer but tastes it.
I like the taste of micro beers but not enough to drink a whole one.

Be prepared for mega-grease if you get their burgers and fries. SO greasy. We don't like it, but if you don't mind a real oil-bath, it's a lot of food for a good price.

We ate at the one near Williamsburg, I believe. I agree, it was okay. It is a splurge---meaning if you eat there you might need to compensate with something light for the next few days. Maybe a few extra trips to the gym, too! LOL
