Unhappy Wisdom Teeth.....HELP

For the last week or so, I have had this sore in my mouth that I first thought was just a canker sore or cold sore, but my hubby said by looking in my mouth I wasn't an open sore. So then after a few days of pain on that side, He thought maybe it could be my wisdom tooth coming in.

Well I haven't been able to eat on that side unless it's something soft. SO i haven been eating less lately. (of course I need to lose a few pounds so It's not so bad BUt I haven't been able to eat at places when we have been invited out to eat, which kinda sucks.

But what i need is some advice. I have done searches on WebMD and others and found out they normally come between teenage years and until about 24. I will be 28 this year!!! Why has it taken this long. ALso it says most of them come in ok, while a majority come in the wrong way so they become infractered. When I feel the area now, I feel like a bump but can't feel it until I look at it in the mirror. It's hard to see but it looks like it could be coming in sideways or so?? I don't have any insurance!!!And they say it can cost as much as 340 dollars to get it pulled out. My husband had pain in of of his but it was after it had come in and had wanted to get it taken out but after awhile he started using a different toothbrush and it went away.

SSOOO....has any one gotten theirs in and have any advice? Or know where I can go without insurance to get this looked at if it doesn't stop hurting. How much longer should I wait UNtil i need to worry???

ANy help would be greatly appreicated.

If the tooth is not through the gum - it is considered impacted - and there could be an infection setting up - causing the pain - this is nothing to fool around with - the infection can get into the bone - and then that is a major problem

My daughter is having hers out in March - they are still under the gum line - no tooth showing - it is going to be about $1500 to have them out -

Your medical insurance may cover some of the cost - I know you said you don't have dental insurance

You need to think of your health first -get it taken care of

Can you take money out of savings - or - borrow from a family member?

Ask the dentist is you can make payments-

Do you live near a School of Dentistry? They might take care of it for low or no cost - if you don't call the local school of medicine - they may also be able to help - if none of those-- call the local hospital and see if they have a dental clinic.

Then when you get this all taken care of - get insurance through your job.

Thanks for that advice!!!

Although As much as I would love to get insurance thru my work, I don't qualify and even if I did, it would cost almost half of my income a month, so its not worth it. I normally don't go to the doctor unless its needed. I had to go last month due to the Strep Throat and i have a bill for that now that i will have to pay out of pocket for. The only cheap thing was the $4 medicine for that.

It could be a wisdom tooth or it could be an abcess. If the pain persists, you have to see a doctor.

Hi,

I am 35 and i just got my first wisdomtooth last year. I thought I was going to absolutely DIE when it was coming in and it came in right for the most part. Only one side is all the way through the gum but I have no more pain unless we have a drastic change in barometric pressure. I think mine took about a month to come in and I took a lot of tylenol and advil together to deal with the pain. When mine came in it caused a lot of pain in my ears when I would lay down to sleep or if I sat with my head tilted. I swear it felt like my head was going explode but heat helped me a lot. I have one of those bed buddy things that is filled with barely or something like that and I would heat that in the microwave and lay that side of my face and jaw on it. I drank a lot of hot tea and slept somewhat propped up.

I did not have a lot of sympathy for my daughter a year ago when she lost her first molar and complained that the new one coming in hurt. Now she has every bit of my sympathy including an apology and I will make her anything soft I can think when she or her sister lose another.

I got me wisdom teeth pulled out in my mid-twenties. Dentist pulled them out just like regular teeth. Unfortunately, when they came in, the wisdom teeth shifted my other teeth. I had braces as a teenager, but could use them again.

You really should have some medical insurance. What happens if you get injured and must go to the hospital?

Now we all know how come babies are so fussy when they get their teeth. When mine came in I chewed a wad of bubble gum on that spot. Yes, it did hurt like crazy, but it helped get it through quicker. Then it got all the way in and I was eating ice and broke it off and had to have it pulled.

I had my wisdom teeth out at 16. No big deal, and I thought nothing more of it. I started having pain about a year ago, age 25, and it turned out I had another wisdom tooth in one spot. There's an age limit to when you're meant to get them, yes, but tell that to your teeth! I'd seek out a dentist who's willing to take a payment plan, and make sure it's not an infection, or anything dangerous. The mouth is one of the worst places to have nasty bacteria.

Perhaps you could use your income tax return on the dental issue? I'd definitely take care of that instead of the LCD/HDTV....(recalling another post)

It does sound like it is your wisdom teeth. I have mixed feelings about having wisdom teeth extracted. I think if you are having issues, then it might be necessary. Several years ago our dentist insisted our teenage daughter have all four of her wisdom teeth out (they were not bothering her at all, but the dentist said they might in the future, and it might be at a time in her life when she was without dental coverage). Well, like a fool...we agreed and she had them out. She missed a week of school and lost about 15lbs. She had a very difficult time. I started to notice that at the High School I worked at, there were a lot of teenagers getting their wisdom teeth extracted by the same oral surgeon. Most of the kids were not having any issues with their wisdom teeth. I just thought it was very strange that so many kids were getting their wisdom teeth pulled when they were not having any dental problems. Even with our dental coverage, it still ended up costing us about $750. I guess I look at it this way....I am 45 years old, and still have my wisdom teeth and have never had any problems. Not to say that someday I won't, but I plan to keep them where they are until/if they need to be removed.

Well thanks for the advice on my tax return, I see you remember my other post.

I would love to use that tax money but unless my tooth can wait until May or June, it will only get worse by then.

Our taxes get offset due to my hubby's past student loan, so it takes longer then usual for us to get our taxes back since they take longer to process. Trust me I would surely get my tooth taken care of before the TV.

She made the post about a TV a little over 2 weeks ago and you still remember it??? And have the audacity to bring it up? How strange--almost stalker like even.

Anyway--back to the OP: For temporary relief try some of the numbing medications (like Oragel), and take Motrin to help with any swelling/inflammation.

I'm 37 y/o and have never had my wisdome teeth taken out. Of course, I had several permanent teeth removed by my old school dentist when I was about 10 or 11. He didn't think braces were the answer, thought it was cheaper and easier to just take out a few teeth. Thus I don't have an overcrowding problem--maybe that's why my wisdom teeth have never bothered me.

For inexpensive dental care, check w/ your County health dept. They do provide medical and sometimes dental care at a greatly reduced rate or on a sliding scale. You do need to get it checked out just to make sure that there is no infection going on.

Maybe it will work out anyways even with the timeframe on your return. I think that a lot of dentists will set up payment plans especially for expensive procedures. Sometimes, these procedures are expensive even with dental insurance. I had to pay a bundle for a crown. However, I don't think it's a place where I'd cut corners. Reminds me of the Jeff Foxworthy bit on low-cost vascetomies.

cj/

ETA: Yes, I do have the audacity to bring it up. OP was looking for ways to be able to afford to take care of her health, so it seemed like a good place to look for some $$ relief.

Speaking of stalkers laying in lurk to pounce on people....LOL.....pot meet kettle.

I've had three wisdom teeth removed, one in my teens, one in my 20's and the third in my 30's (just last May, in fact). The pain was nearly UNBEARABLE at times for all three of them, all of mine were impacted and were trying to come in under my back molars.

Is it a top wisdom tooth or a bottom? I know that the top ones can be extracted with local anesthesia while the bottom ones sometimes require IV sedation--so I'm sure you're looking at a difference in cost there, too.

The last one that I had removed was on the bottom and I was IV sedated. I think the total for my consultation, extraction and follow-up was around $600. Of course, you'll have a few prescriptions, too. I think I had three, one antibiotic, one painkiller and one for nausea. I didn't use any of them except the antibiotic so you could always skip filling the others.

If they offer you IV sedation, TAKE IT!!! I barely remember anything!

You know? I find it extremely odd that you can remember a specific post from over 2 weeks ago. Apparently you have more time on your hands to troll the boards than the average person. Apparently you have a photographic memory--it's just freaky how you seem to be able to pull old posts up to use against a person...

Photographic memory? Probable not. I think she just clicked on the OP's user name and looked at her recent posts. Not too freaky.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out, at the same time, when I was a teenager-one of them was partially thru the gum and the others were impacted. Something that helped with the pain before I got them out was for me to take something firm, put it on the sore spot and then bite down on it, putting pressure on the tooth I was "cutting" (I used a popsicle stick for this purpose). It made the pain worse for a few seconds but then it was better. My mom used to joke that I was acting like a teething baby-wanting to chew on everything.

Get the tooth out if it really is your wisdom tooth. I've heard of people having the problem where the tooth comes thru the gum, then goes back under, then comes back out, creating a never ending problem until it gets pulled.

I had mine pulled at a School of Dentistry. I was part of a study for a pain killer!!! I got the pain killer thank goodness. They did give a back up prescription in case I got the placebo. The best thing was, it was free. It was a regular dentist that pulled it, students just watched.

and once again--why would anyone do that? Why does a person find it necessary to go and read a person's previous posts just to use it against the person?

I mean really? I can count on ONE hand how many times I've clicked on a person's name to read their prior posts. And 99% of the time, it was in instances like this (a prior post is referenced in a current post).

I stand by my original post--CJS' post was rude, condescending and stalker like.

I had mine out a couple years ago, but they weren't impacted.. oral surgeon was I think around $600 before insurance, and we paid around $400 out of pocket, so I think I would have been better off just paying cash and not waiting that year until we had insurance! I also had the IV sedation and woke up about halfway through but didn't feel a thing. He had done the bad tooth by then. I drank Coke and ate pizza later that night, never had a problem with anything. I also saw a dentist before that so I don't know how much that helped... already had the x-rays and stuff done. It's possible you can get some kind of loan for paying for it, I think a lot of dentists use CareCredit? Seems like I was taking Excedrine Migraine until I had stomach issues from it (about 1 month of use) and then took Ibuprofen which seemed to work almost immediately but Tylenol took a good hour to do anything.. and of course Anbesol.. went through soooooooo much of that. But mine were all out and had one falling apart so those may not help you.

I only had one, and swore it was coming in.... My dentist said no, it was a bad filling nearby. A week later I was at work and it finally came in. I called my dentist and yelled at him, then called dh's oral surgeon and they had me in quick as a wink.

I would also recommend sedation, and do whatever they tell you. I am one of those people who are up and about right away, and probably shouldn't have been. Dh takes days to get over the sedation.

My son was 6 months old when I was told to have my (4) wisdom teeth cut out. I had it done all at one time. Wasn't so bad until about 2 days later. they turned into dry sockets. I wont go into what that felt like, but if you have any kids, then think 10X worse...... ! My only advice is to go see your dentist. If he or she will take payment then do it. Don't let time go by and then you will need surgery (more money). Better safe then sorry. Good Luck . Keep us up to date . Irish

I had 4 molars pulled when I was in High School, and I think that allowed my wisdom teeth to come in with no problems, so I really don't know about the pain of it, etc. I know several people that had to get their's cut out/removed.

I would do as several other posters here have said, and try to find a dentist (oral surgeon) who will accept payments if you aren't able to pay all at once. It is very important to take care of your teeth.

Good Luck, keep us posted on how it goes.

P.S. I know someone who had a tooth pulled at Sears Dental Center, in case you have one of those in your area.

Yes, according to the person I talked to. I have not seen a dental center in a Sears store, myself, but, it wouldn't surprise me.

I have one coming in right now...I'm 28. I actually only developed 3 and all were impacted until this year. I have absolutely NO pain, but still want it taken out. Anyways...if you're having pain, it's best to see a DDS now. It's quite possible there is an abscess and that can start eatting away at the bone and eventually, could effect the tooth next to it. Then you could be looking at having 2 teeth extracted instead of just one. I've seen it happen over and over again...guys in there 30's having their wisdom teeth come in, they aren't brushing good way back there and next thing you know, there's an abscess, the bone support is gone clear to the next tooth and we're extracting both the wisdom tooth and the tooth next to it.

my son needed his soft tissue impacted wisdom teeth out when he was about 16. OP is self diagnosing, because it could be a jaw infection or something even worse. I think she should first bite the buttlet and get an opinion from a dentist or dental surgeon. When DS had his pulled out, none of the oral surgeons take any insurance at all, so I put it on my credit card, files a claim, got part of the money back and paid the rest off. not much you can do when you need dental attention. It cost about 1200 (for two teeth). When you pay the bill, remember all of the money you have saved by not paying insurance premiums, you are still way ahead of the game. My employer takes about $400 a month out of my pay for an 80/20 plan, so I make sure I have enough money sitting in the bank to cover an emergency expense, or at the least, credit on my card.
As for the TV issue, its no one's business, but I personally wouldnt buy one yet, because I would rather have a bit of cash in the bank...jmo

hi
my wisdom teeth came out during ages 25 to 30 .
and i also had pain like canker soars when they come out, but not on all sides at the same time thankfully. the pain was not continuous, they would "flare up" once in a while.
do you have swelling, if yes that may be an abscess, you have to see the doctor and take antibiotics for it.
if they come out ok (not sideways) you don't have to take them out unless there is decay.
one of mine was extracted because was decayed a month ago, i am 40, was very easy, did not hurt, didn't even have to take tylenol. i did get 3 shots tho.
someone i know took his out, with no insurance, paid $105.
another option, if you have free clinic around.

Thanks

I do Appreicate ALL the good advice on this topic. And I will be making some calls on MOnday I'm sure when I get time to find out what I can.

AS far as the post on my "tax return" I did feel that was kinda rude, but just didnt say it at the time. I am glad I wasn't the only one thinking that. I have never went and looked up info to put against someone else.

I came here hoping ongetting some ideas from others, since this is what the board is about right?
I don't want people to look at me as if I'm trying to make everyone feel sorry for me.

So again THANK YOU ALL for your kind words and ideas.[/i]

The one out here sucked. I would not even think of recommending them to anyone. Their hours are terrible and very hard to get an appointment. Sorry no advice on the wisdom teeth. Just (((HUGS)))

Just wondering what happened with your teeth??? I had some dental work done last week, and was thinking of you.
