Red face Early school dismissal due to weather WTH

Ok it is getting nasty here. We had predictions of sleet and freezing rain for today and tomorrow. So when I woke up this morning there were already so many schools closed. I emailed my dh to see how the weatehr was for him driving to work. So he replies right after the kids had left saying the roads are bad and to keep the kids home.
SO I figure they would close school early. I get the call at 11:30 saying yep school closing early. So I am figuring the kids would get out around 12:30-1. Nope they are getting dismissed at 3:10 instead of 3:30. A whole 20 minutes early, whoopee!
Luckily my dh just called and he gets to leave early. He works at a community college and they have canceled classes for the rest of the day. So he is going to go pick the kids up. It is getting really bad out, sleeting now and has been for at least the last hour. I just thought it was so weird that they are only letting them out 20 minutes early!

Some times it is due to the buses having to service more than one school - and the trickle down affect is that one school may only get out 20 minutes early

I figured as much. We are a fairly small town area tho , just one high school, 2 middles and a few elementary.
Just seemed not worth the effort to me.
Just lucky & happy that dh got to leave early.

We are in Lexington KY. Our entire district let out 3 hours early today. The weather started just after we picked up the kids at 11:30 and went for about 2 hours covering everything in a layer of ice. We had to run an errand or two after the girls got out of school and traffic was horrible, it took us an hour to get across town, a trip that normally takes about 10 or 15 minutes. Now most of it is melted and I'm staring at the remnants of a pile of ice melt on my porch.

I'm in Western Kentucky and ours never even got there today. It started here somewhere between 4:30 and 6am. By 6:30am there was a solid sheet of ice on all the roads.

Seems to me when I was young (and I'm old now-class of '74) it was a come if you can make it but if you can't that's ok, stay home. I would assume lots of things have changed-lawsuit risk being a big one. Also all the fairness crap-it's not fair that I can't go to school today because of the weather but you can. That sutff didn't happen in my day! lol

We were okay this morning. The Principal made an announcement at 11a that we would dismiss at 12:50p. hadn't started anything yet. But by the time we were leaving the school (I am an aide) we had ice on our windows and had to scrape. The road were getting a little slick. IT has either rained or sleeted for the last three hours straight.

I can remember one fine winter day walking home from high school, way back in the late fifties. We took public transportation in those days and that day the buses weren't running on time and when they did show up they were already full. The walk is about 10 miles. Today, I'd be dead after the first mile...lol..

It's like that here too.......but that kids don't get extremely excited, since there are no increment weather days here, any time they miss, they make up.... I know my parents, who are both teachers back in Ohio, have already gone past the 5 days they can miss........

We are on our 5 days mark. We had snow and freezing rain last week one-2 hour delay and 2 full canceled days.
Today another snow day with snow and freezing rain, upper Ohio (Cleveland ) and Ind, has been hit real hard so they are getting most of the salt. Our city ran out of salt yesterday so they had to shut down 2 of the main roads into the city. They are real nice hills, so that left the one main road that intercepts our road. We have a level 2 emergency enforce now. I hope we don't have anymore snow days, they will take away our spring break and I will have to call off to go to Bristol NC for the Nascar race ! drats

Here in PA I woke up - saw the snow and knew - we would be closing our schools... :-( Today is my cleaning day!!! (I should I say WAS). This is our fifth snow day this year - one of them was just last week and with Presidents Day this week - well he has been home more than gone! This day also marks the start of when we run our school year late to accomidate it...
