Do your kids talk about Emo people all of the time?

I am so sick of hearing so and so is Emo. I guess Emo is suppose to stand for emotional.

I have noticed teenage boys wearing their pants so tight that I don't see how they walk, they look like girl pants. I think I am getting old!!!!!!!

Okay, I've heard my DD and DS talk about a boy that's a bit different than the rest of the population. DS swears the boy is wearing girls jeans because of the design on the rear pocket. So, I guess it's true. Boys wearing girls jeans!! What will they do next?? Seems to me the front of the jeans might not be cut adequate enough.

Yep. When I was picking up my son two year ago at high school (9th grade) there was this boy walking down the street with jet black hair, kinda hanging over one side of his face. Then I noticed his jeans being sooo tight, especially in the front. When my son got in the car and we drove by him I said something to him and he said "oh, that's an emo". I said what the heck is that and he said it stands for emotional. I said you've GOT to be kidding. So he explained the girls jean, how they cry easily, etc... Man, I'm glad he's home schooling his jr and sr year! Goth, emos, druggies, sex at school etc.... What a world.

Yeah, Emo is the thing now.....work in a middle school and the Emo thing starts here about 7th grade...and it carries through high school. Boys are definitely wearing girls jeans. We have to stop and think though, our parents thought our clothes, music, hair, etc., was weird when we were these kids' ages.

My daughters are both out of high school now (purely by the grace of God), but they have commented on guys wearing girl jeans. From what I can gather, it's a skater thing. Disgusting to me. Why do kids have to be so weird????What happened to good looking teenage guys???

Emo, Goth, I hear it all the time here with 4 teens.
I don't get the Emo thing, but I'm a mom, so it figures.
The goth thing is confusing to me.
When I was younger *goth* meant a lifestyle, now my kids tell me it's just a way of dressing. Goth also meant a style of makeup (for guys and gals) when I was younger. Evidently, according to my kids, goth doesn't mean the makeup anymore.
2 of my teens have informed me they are going to dress *goth*... to them it means wearing all black clothing. I went through that phase in the late 60's/early 70's, but we didn't call it *goth*.

I guess I was something like punk in high school, black boots, black/white spandex pants, a skirt over them like something Cindi Lauper would wear <around waist black jean material and the skirt part was lace> and some kinda tshirt, metallica or something..... what was I thinking, good lord I'm glad there's no pictures for my kids to see!

Now Marilyn Mason isnt he Goth? to me he's like CREEPY

Oh yes. I prefer an emo look to the ridiculous baggy pants/butt hanging out scene. I was into guys wearing eyeliner in the 80s, so it doesn't bother me nowadays when I see guyliner on a male, lol.

Marilyn Manson was 90's goth, with Nine Inch Nails, and a bunch of other groups I should probably remember, but don't. Anyway, that all boiled down to clothes, bad eyeliner, and a tendency to hang around smoking and moping. I don't think anyone committed any crimes in the name of Closer, but I know parents hated it. I tended more to the mod thing, so I got away with that.

The emo thing does involve girl pants, and it does involve whiny music, but I don't think it's hurting anyone either. It doesn't seem to involve as much smoking, or nail polish, and I'm not aware of any problems with emo gangs. Just as well, since there aren't too many colors they could use. Have any generations passed without at least a few bad fads?

It seems the norm around here is these kids supposedly cut themselves too At least they claim to. Alot of kids say they are cutters for attention. What a way to get attention.

I don't mind baggy pants but I will agree I don't want to see the butts hanging out.

I can't get use to the guys wearing girls clothing. It makes me wonder if they stand in the mirror and wonder if thier butt is too big.

the emo's are in abundance here also. boys wearing tight girl pants, those emo hairstyles, and guyliner (which is what you call it when guys wear eyeliner). And yeah most Emo's are cutters. The emo kids to me are kind of funny b/c they sit around thinking of how they are miserable or how emotional their life is.

*Cutters* cut themselves for a thrill. Usually with a razor blade. It's actually quite popular right now.
If you have preteens/teenagers, ask them about it.

Although this thread is proving that emo dressing and cutting go together, it's not always true.
I know a very nice, pretty, smart girl who is a cutter. You'd never know.

I had to ask my daughter to explain Emo to me at the beginning of the school year, because I wasn't sure exactly what she was talking about.........and cutting is big here too.

Many teens claim to cut not for the thrill at all, but for the feeling that they get that confirms that they can "feel something real."

I think that is so sad. This is not a small group of kids - all trying to feel something in a world where they have become so de-sensitized. Apparently the cutting gives them some sort of "relief" that they are not completely numb.

I think there are a lot of copycats out there at this point - just want to look like they have this deep need to feel something.

I will never forget when we were at bush gardens a few yrs ago. there was these 2 teens dressed in goth clothing right down to the long black shiney coats.you know they were burning up since it was liek 90 that day. they walked around looking like they were at someone funeral. They were in line with us to get on some water ride and when they came off the ride, their makeup ( white pancake face make up and lots of black eye liner) had ran all over their faces! every one around there was laughing at it. we watched them on the ride and they never smiled or laughed the whole time. just sat there like zombie.

There are degrees of Emo. Some kids just like to try the emo clothing and hair style. Some are more hardcore and are also cutters.

I saw a funny t-shirt it said "I wish my lawn was Emo so it would cut itself." , I'm not morbid just easily entertained.
When my daughter was in middle school/JR high I think I heard more about it, she is in high school now and I don't hear much.
I do know that here emo people are usually skaters, and the jean they wear are boys and there called Krew jeans, Krew is the brand. They type of jeans are called "skinny".

My husband used to wear girls jeans in the high school, as well.

He did it because he rode BMX bikes professionaly, and while his waist and butt were incredibly skinny, his thighs were not.
Girls jeans were all he could find that he could wear (that were tight of course!).

Maybe it was BMX'ers that started this fad and we don't even know it!

That is so sad about the cutting. And scary. I can't even imagine. My next door neighbor (upstanding, uppity, wealthy, do no wrong) have a daughter that turned emo in 8th grade. She started cutting herself last year and they put her in the mental hospital.
Now, other people were *gasp* shocked, and they were embarassed. I wasn't and never said a word. I will be the last person that will ever judge someone for their child having to go to a facility, HOWEVER.. I had NO CLUE that cutting went along with being emo!!! I am wondering if they know this as well.
If it is, I am sure that would make them feel much better, rather than thinking that she really has some emotional problems deep rooted that they might not be able to help.

Why is it, that a fad, can turn into something so dangerous? Crazy.
