what are you guys doing to save water?

We are in a drought and I was wondering what you guys do to save water.
we have rain barrells that collect water for watering the garden, flowers and such.
we catch the cold water that comes out before it gets hot and put in in jugs for watering flowers inside.
limit the flushing
use bath water to flush with.
put a bottle of water in the back of the toliet
low flow shower head
anything else you guys are doing ?

we need to save every bit that we can. give me your best tips! thanks!!!!

The one thing that has saved the most water at our house is buying a new front loader washer. There is no comparison between the amount of water used by the old one (a top loader) and the new one.

This is a big expense initially, but we put in dual-flush toilets about a year ago. Our water bills are half what they were.

What is a dual flush toilet? And how much do they cost?

Other than turning the water off when brushing our teeth nothing. And I will never go to a water saving shower head.

You sound like my husband lol... he actually pulled out the water saver piece out of one we bought recently!

Hmm.. we have a washer that is supposed to be excellent on water, and I run the dishwasher on water save mode... but I think everything else makes up for it, like my daughter wanting to bathe a LOT...

I have a front load washer and run the dishwasher on water save mode. Other than that, I am embarrassed to say, not much else.

In the summer we do not water the lawn or landscaping.

Dual flush toilets have 2 buttons, so you can choose whether you use a lot of water or just a little...if you know what I mean. Even the full flush uses less water than a standard toilet. Dual flusher are quite popular in Europe and Asia.

This isn't where I ordered mine... I'm just adding this link so you can see what it looks like and check the price.

We get billed for so much each month whether we use it or not. So NO, I don't conserve water. If I pay for it then I'm going to use it and use it all . Our bills just went up. I don't think its fair but..... what do you do?

There's no drought around Oregon this year. We have had record snowfalls which melt down into our water supply. Other than taking normal water conservation steps we do nothing but dance in the rain.

if its brown flush it down, if its yellow, let it mellow (just kidding)
we have a well, and are almost at flood stage, so we just do our standard things, like full loads of laundry and turn off the faucet when brushing)

We tried to collect water in barrels and got wrote up by the community manager because it was "an eyesore" worse aprt about it is DH works for the complex ! We had the barrels behind the house where you cant see them unless you come into our yard and look for them since we back up to another community with a big wooden fence separating us and we have fences around our property, sure sucks to try to do something and cant. We pay water quarterly and they just raised the cost.

I have had soda bottles in my toilets for years. Water-saving shower heads and thats about it, wish I could od more we had a draught last summer and I dont want my lawn to die again this year but if it happens it happens.

We use less than the minimum amount for which you get charged in our town, so I guess we're doing something right. We don't water the lawn in the summer. We don't take long showers. We don't let water run. We're lazy and don't always change the sheets every week, so they don't get washed every week!

we also dont use the dishwasher , wash it all by hand only when there is a full load. that saves some. I do dishes a little different than some folks. I use the new dawn foam. I run just a little water in the sink. get the foam and the sponge and go to work on them. then I have a dish pan that has water in it that I have saved and heated on the wood stove. i dump the dishes in it and rinse them that way then pour the water that is in the dish pan on my flowers on the front porch. the soap does no harm and actually kills some types of bugs and aphaids and such.

I would love to put in some type of in ground rain storage system but thats in the future. We only put as much water as the girls need for their baths then we use the bathwater to water the plants. We had to quit watering our lawn by law. We try to only run the clothes or dishwasher when we have a full load and then run them on the shortest cycle needed. I don't know we could cut our water usage down by much.

One of the big water wastes is long showers.

We know 2 gals that take half hour showers!
They both shave their legs in the shower and they are very slow.
One gal empties the hot water tank each shower. What a waste!
I don't think the lighting is that great in most showers so why shave in there??

Our lawn is made of gravel, which is pretty common around here, and DH and I tend to shower together. Sounds naughty, but it means I can shave my legs while he washes his hair.

We don't really conserve water either, sorry to say. We don't own, and I never have, so someday maybe I'll own a house, and have to pay a water bill, so it might change. Although, where I live now, apparently in this town, the more water you use, the lower the rate you pay, so our landlord likes us to use a lot!! I did have to pay a water bill at an apartment I rented in AZ and it was never more than $35 a month, don't know if that is average, or what, but I thought it was okay. We don't really waste water, but we do regular things. (washing machine, dishwasher, showers, baths)

Nothing. Our water/sewer bill is so minimal, and there is a minimum charge per quarter which is what we are almost always charged.

I don't live in AZ, so it probably makes a big difference, but the water bill for our house is $30 for 3 months.
