Anyone watching Oprah today?

Oprah has people who dumpster dive for food?

I think they call them selves "Freegans"

Interesting segment, but I am not joining them.

OHMIGOSH!! That sounds nasty! Did they do it because it was something they enjoyed or was it a money issue?

I have an uncle who does this. He used to always give me stuff he found, then I would throw it away. I tried just refusing it, but he acted like I was hurting his feelings. He brought all sorts of things. Even Strawberries.

Yuck!

I find it disgusting but its great for the environment and great for their finances. I wonder if it costs them more in medical bills than they save.I hate waste but ugh.

They were not poor people. The one lady was some executive makng a big salary,
One couple was an Engineer and a Doctor.

I guess it would be easier in NY since they put the stuff at the curb in boxes, not a dirty, smelly, dumpster

Still not for me. I can just see the stares you would get from people as they pass you .
With them it is the waste , at least that is what they said.

Although I know people do get good food from the garbage I will continue to buy mine from the inside of the store or at the farms.

No, I wouldn't eat any fresh or exposed food, but I imagine that a lot of it is in a bag or can and probably would be safe to eat. I do see people at Aldi's quite often rummaging through their dumpster. I imagine that they throw away a lot of produce. And fresh produce most likely is the thing that stores throw away quite a bit of because it is perishable. Too bad the grocery stores can't set up an arrangement for a shelter to come and pick up anything that will be tossed.

A couple of years ago, I used to pick up apples ( a big box) that would be discarded and brought them to the horse stables. I asked a few stores, but only one said that they would give them to me. It's easier to throw away than make arrangements, I guess.

It is sad that the stores waste so much food. It should go to feed the hungry.

They said if one egg breaks they toss the rest of the package. Milk was still sealed in cartons. Cans that had no labels on, etc. Coffee beans had gone out of date.

These are ALL things that should be donated to soup kitchens, homeless shelters or food banks.
BUT they dump it.

My friend used to work at Kroger's and one of his jobs was to tear open the bags of buns, bread, etc. before it was discarded to discourage dumpster diving. Disgusting wasteful, if you ask me.

Most of the restaurants and grocery stores in this community donate to the Food Rescue Express. They are with the county food bank and they go around at night and collect up all the useable food for the food bank and soup kitchens.

I agree, throwing it all away is such a huge waste with all the starving or near starving people in the U.S., not to mention the world. I do know though that a lot of large corporations will not donate it to shelters, etc., due to the liability of it (the food being past the 'dates'). It still makes me sad too that it's wasted.

It's quite ridiculous that liability laws and our sue-happy nation makes it impossible to donate past-dated food to the indigent or others in need. I buy scratch-and-dent and day-old all the time, especially from the Pepperidge Farm outlet nearby.

Shakes head.
