Chat Rooms @ School?

My daughter's friend (she is 15) is going into chat rooms during lunch using the schools computers.

She's talking with "guys who want her to role play" and they are "being really disgusting" according to my DD (who is also 15).

Would you do or say anything???

Just info on the school, it's a large public high school (1500 students) and I don't know the mother of the friend very well.

UPDATE: I have e-mailed the principal and will post what she says. it may take a few days, she's not known for being quick to respond

UPDATE #2: She said that they DO have filters that are regularly updated. She is going to send my question to the tech person at the school, but the tech is out until Monday. I told her that the kids must be getting around it somehow, as my daughter has witnessed her friend in a chat room "role playing" with guys.

Like Nicole, I believe filters help keep them safe, it's not censoring. I'm surprised that her middle school did not have filters but the high school does! You would think that the school district would have a district wide policy regarding this.

chat rooms and things like that are blocked at my kids schools. would think a larger school like that would have them blocked as well

I'd definitely make the administration aware of what was going on...You could even do it anonymously if you didn't want your daughter to know that you got involved...It's probably some adult men that she's talking to, getting their groove on talking to young girls...Nasty...Yes, let the principal know what's going on right under his roof...They should have some sort of block on these computers... ~Lisa

We also had a problem like this at the middle school 4 years ago. My daughter went to see why everyone was huddled around a computer, and the kids were looking at PORN!

Back then, I contacted the principal, and she said that they didn't belive in "censoring the internet" so they didn't even have a safe search on the computers. In the next school newsletter, she even wrote an article regarding her position on why they don't use any type of safe filters on their computers.

That was in the same school district, so I bet they don't have any filters on the computers at the high school either.

Geez....our stuff is so filtered I can't even get on myspace or facebook at school. The kids are censored from google images too. I think someone need to bring that to the attention of the administration of the school or the school board. There should be filters in place for that kind of stuff. Unless the kids are using a proxy site to get around the filters

I always thought schools blocked that sort of thing? Don't they monitor these kids?

I'm with Toonces here. I teach in a middle/high school....myspace, facebook, and any search imagages are blocked. Also, yahoo mail, hotmail....and are you ready for this? Mycoupons is *access denied*! Ugh. So, I can't even cheat at school and read all this good stuff!

I personally think the schools should have a lot blocked. Yes, sometimes it's a pain, but we really don't need them accessing porn. And, they don't need to be writing on facebook walls when they should be learning.

I'd call the principal, and maybe even take the matter to the school board.

I cant get anywhere at my school. I can get on MC thats about it. No yahoo mail. We have everything blocked. I use the computer a lot for my kids and for projects .
I have to download at home on my jump drive and then bring to school. I would think the school needs to be aware of this.

I learned from my daughter that even with the filter, some can get around it! One way is to google say yahoo mail - click in the link from google and the filter didn't stop them.

Just one of many ways kids can get around blocking and filtering at school.

Then that district needs some better filtering...LOL They should be able to globally block those domains even if they are going about it through another site.

I agree! I just find it funny (maybe even scary) how young teenagers figure these things out. They are so smart these days, I hope they put their brains to good use in the future

To me it's not true censoring, it's keeping our kids safe!

I know our school computers have the safe search on them, and they welcome parents to try them out.

Plus there is always a monitor in the room with the computers.

I find it scary that this is allowed!

Apparently they don't monitor kids on computers in the school library very well at all - last year at one of our high schools - there was a group of 6 kids who stole cc#'s and were able to order over $10,000.00 in merchandise and have it sent directly to the school - and yet they still haven't figured out which 6 kids did it!!! Maybe they should put in a video camera that watches computer activity - I don't see a problem with that - because they shouldn't be doing anything that they would get in trouble for.

Oh I just don't know these days - you do all you can and yet the school district sure doesn't listen or take matters seriously enough!!

And to think I just found out that they are now filming a movie about the cheerleaders from my oldest's high school - these girls got drunk, wore their uniforms and headed down to a Condom's To Go location and filmed each other posing!!! Did they all get in trouble and kicked off the squad - nope - mostly because the principal at the time - her daughter was Captain!!!

So damn disgusting if you ask me!!!
