The Melting Pot is a fondue restaurant. Its on the expensive side, but nice for special occasions. That being said, we have ordered the court bullion before and it's not anywhere as good as cooking with the oil. I'm sure it cuts the calories way down, but if I'm gonna spend that kind of money for a dinner, it better be good! We've never done the oil before, just usually do the bouillon and we like it. Might have to try the oil next time though. When we go, DH and I usually split a cheese fondue, salad, an entree, and dessert, and find there's plenty to eat. That way it cuts way down on the cost.

The first time we went, we went with another couple. That was fun...if you don't mind everyone dipping into the same food. Some people are funny about this and don't like it. The second (and last) time we went, it was just DH and myself. I think that it's more fun when you go with other people. The last time it just seemed like alot of work to me. I'd rather just sit down and be served my food instead of having to cook it myself. I guess I'm just getting lazy and grouchy in my old age! ~Lisa

I agree...not nearly as good as the oil. We have been there several times, very romantic. (by the way, if you are weirded out by dipping in the same pot, just make sure you go with people who actually have manners and know how to fondue...you do not eat off the fondue fork...ever)

Personally, I can't stand the oil. We get the coq au vin bouillon and we really enjoy it. We got 1 or 2 times a year and then we do our own at home every other month or so (the kids love it but I won't take them to melting pot)

Hubby and I have done a few of the flavored boullions and we rather like them. The oil is a bit caloric for us when you add the cheese fondue and the chocolate fondue. Also if we go with my parents my dad can't eat garlic so we find they can often make the special flavored ones without it (but not the court boullion flavor). I like the Coq au Vin and we LOVE the Mojo style one with seafood (and extra garlic if my parents aren't there). Sometimes they have a special cooking method for their signature meal and thats often good too.

I have only had the flavored boullions and thought they were great. By the way here in Virginia Beach they have a girls night out almost every month. Full course dinner for $25 a big savings. Go online and sign up for there emails and they will send you an email each month with the date and time. Maybe in other areas also.

My mom went for her bday in January and she and her DH had to stop on the way home for something to eat because the portions were so puny. She said when they brought the food, her DH didn't eat at first because he thought it was just her food. On the platter with the cheese fondue was veggies and bread or whatever-there was 2 of everything on there-2 baby carrots, 2 chunks of bread, etc. Way overpriced for the little food they got.

Thanks everyone. I'm taking my 8 year old for "girls night out", lol. It's only $30 (they said we can share since she's so little). She LOVES the oil one, but I don't know that she'd like the bouillion. I do want to try it though - esp the mojo one. tamommy, with the cheese fondue, you can have all you can eat veggies and bread, at least at all the ones I've been to.

What is all of that suppose to mean?? I sense that you are being a little racist in order to get a stir out of people. Why don't you think about doing something constructive with your life? Like grow up?

I'm of the opinion that PUM may actually be a staff member of MC and posts just to stir up controversy and traffic to the boards. Ever notice when one board get's particularly slow PUM shows up spewing the vile, hateful, crap that she always does?

we've had a poster in the past that wasnt actually A poster it was multiple people useing the same account which I was thinking was the same thing now, but the staff member theory sounds more like it and it shouldnt be allowed either way. I've never put anyome on ignore but racism isnt something I want to see/hear

| I know this is off the main topic of the restaurant and for that I apologize but I also reported this person last night. I see that their post here is now gone, but they are still a member and have several "odd" posts on other boards. I would hate to think it is a mod. Trollers are common on many message boards and I think it is just a sad person who enjoys getting people riled up. Until they ban PUM we just have to ignore them. Now as far as the restaurant goes, it sounds like they are slightly different all over the country as far as pricing, service and portions. I used to go to a similar one in Manhattan called LaFondue and loved it. We use our fondue pot every New Year's Eve with oil and the family loves the tradition. I want to try the restaurant, but the reputation of our local one is not the best.

Thank you very much for standing up for me everyone. I appreciate that. Rose, how does the oil get hot enough w/ a home fondue pot? Is yours electric or do you use it on the stove?

There is a knob for low to high heat. The cord does run across the table. I was always worried when the kids were younger, but we never had a problem. The sterno ones I don't think would heat up sufficiently. But I never tried them. And if you heat it on the stove, I think it would cool down too quickly. The electric one tries to keep it at an even temperature--and since we always do it on a holiday or birthday, we do linger over dinner. (To see if it is ready, you skewer a piece of bread and if it bubbles when you place it in, it is ready to go.) It uses a lot of oil, that is annoying (I do try to reuse it, but I don't fry that often). The family loves it. I cut up pieces of sirloin or london broil and we cook our own. I have never tried chicken. I usually have an assortment of 6 dipping sauces (after you cook the piece to dip in)---like horseradish mayo, honey mustard, soy sauce, bar-b-que, orange-ginger, etc. Then serve it with a salad and baked potato.

we use the Cuisinart fondue pots...LOVE them! Beside fondue, they are great for buffets as well to keep food warm. Ours have electric cords that have magnets to stay attached to the pot. That way, you take them off and the pot can be put in the dishwasher. We have two of them and usually do chocolate and a broth for meats and veggies

We've never been to The Melting Pot but we make our own fondue at home. We use a small cast iron fondue pot for our oil (but we heat it on the stove first to get it hot, the liquid fondue fuel keeps it at a high temp afterwards) and an electric fondue pot for our cheese fondue. Our kids LOVE fondue nights...I'm pretty sure they think it's really called FUN-due. I believe I bought both of our pots at Target. That being said, I'd still love to go to The Melting Pot. We used to have one close by but I noticed it was gone the last time I drove through the area. I waited too long! |
