Why would a parent do this?

I don't know if this has been posted before but my son pointed this home video that some parent posted of his child at the holidays. I can't even describe my reaction. Well, I guess I can but I can't bring myself to write the words as there could be a minor reading this.

I must be either a sap or too emotional because I just had a baby two weeks ago, but that made me cry. Seriously. I can understand not being able to afford something but it is beyond cruel to tease a little kid like that. That kid is going to remember that for the rest of thier life and someday that may come back to bite the "mom" in the butt.

I kept waiting for the "real" Xbox to appear.

How mean. Excuse me but I wanted to kick her fat ass. That was just cruel. They went out of their way to be cruel and on Christmas too.
Child abuse.

What total A-Holes !!Poor little guy, I wish Parent wouldn't do things like this. What a terrible way to treat the person you are suppose to love.

That kid is going to be bitter remembering this. If they do this to him on Christmas day what do they do the rest of the year to hurt that kids feelings so that they can have a cheap laugh? I know my son would have cried!

They ruined that little boy's Christmas! Oh someone needs to send that video into the Ellen DeGeneres show!! I hope those people are ashamed of themselves.

One can only hope that at the end when they all got up and walked away that they were going to get the real Xbox.

Poor baby. How horribly cruel. It's one thing to not get the XBox but to do that...just mean, hateful & disgusting!

Mom keeps saying they did not have enough money to get an XBox, but it sure looks there there is no shortage of food for mama. (yea, I know it's Catty, but that was my first thought!)

That was extremely cruel. Why in the world would you wrap up clothes in a xbox 360 box just to torture the poor kid. I couldn't believe all the laughter I heard in the background. Shame on those people. How sad.

Man, that was low.
The little boy looked so sad. How disappointing to unwrap the gift, seeing the XBox and getting so excited. After prodding from the mom to open it, he finds it's winter clothes. On top of that, people are getting their jollies by laughing at his expense. Some joke.

Awful.

I understand if people can't afford something like that. But why put the gift in an XBox box?
And then to have the moment memorialized on video?

I'd give him a system if I could.

The little guy looked so let down and sad. He just broke my heart.

You know the type people that did that are the ones the "fake lottery" people should show up for.

My thoughts exactly. He obviously wants it - why tease him with the box? And then keep laughing afterwards. And then post it for everyone to see? Sad.

As I read everyones posts, I thought I would not watch the video because I knew it would upset me. So, what is wrong with me that I went back and watched it? Now I feel sick. I really wish I hadn't watched it.

I showed the video to my 13 yr old DD and she said that was the meanest thing she had ever seen. She has seen alot of mean stuff too.

I wonder how they got the box for it? I wonder if they had one but then sold it for a bunch of money?

My DS has begged for an Xbox360 for the last two Christmas and I couldn't imagine doing this to him. I am honest with him and tell him we can't afford to get him one and buy other Christmas for them too. I would never play a joke like that on him. That would just break his heart. Besides that, my DS has Nintendo 64 and Playstation 2, a computer and other stuff so I really don't feel that he "needs" an XBOX360 but if I had the cash to blow on it for him I would. He has lucked out because his uncles give him their stuff when they are done and they want newer. When he gets the hand me downs they are like new anyways. He is also lucky that his dad is computer savvy and knows how to build them.

Sorry I trailed off but once again I started thinking more into thins then I should!!

I think the fake lottery people ought to pay his family a visit and see what they think is funny when it is all said and done.

Did you hear the woman taking the video? At 1:27 into it, she says, "we can't afford an x-box, look into the camera and cry"

These are some sick people.

How sad.....If I had the boys address or even name. I would go and buy him and xbox and send it to him. This is going to be burned into his memory for the rest of his life. Everyone has bad memories from childhood but this one was plotted out by his own mother! Its one thing to be disappointed you didn't get a xbox for Christmas, but to be teased, laughed at, and then have your mother video tape it (which video cameras aren't cheap) then decide to show your pain on the web is cruel.

I didn't see the video because I don't want to even look at what you guys are discussing and I hate crying @ work. But if, as another poster indicated, she has a buxom backside, maybe somebody should wrap up a weight loss product in a candy box & give it to her.

Being that mean to a child is just inexcusable.

i can't

I can't believe what I just watched.
That was undoubtedly the most horrible thing I have seen.
I worked with Child Protective Services for years and this is the most heart wrenching thing I have seen.

I heard the woman telling him to look into the camera and cry....WTF?

I am so upset for this child. He will forever be marked by that event.

I am gonna pray that this child is okay, because obviously he is in a living h3ll!

I too was wishing I could buy this kids the XBOX, but that still wouldn't take away his pain of having a mother that would do that to him. My heart breaks for him and all other children who are treated cruelly, especially by their own mothers. How can this be?

After watching this video, I got the impression this wasn't the 1st time this has happened to the kid. He had to be prodded to open the box.
All the kids I know would have ripped into the box right away.
I can't believe anyone would do this to a child.

MENTAL CRUELTY.

I didn't hear any sound when I played it.
But who needs sound ?? The look on that childs face said so much.
That poor child.

I hope there is someone in that childs life that cares about him. She sure doesn't act like she does.

If these cruel people can behave like this on Christmas Day and tape it no less for people to laugh at I can only imagine what brand of Hell this poor child endures on a daily basis.

It was the saddest thing I have seen in a long time.

I cried for that little boy and I wish I knew who he is and who that rotten poor excuse of a Mother is so I could do something anything. I bet if he had an XBox 360 the bitch would sell it for crack.

Worst parents in the world punk kid into thinking he got an Xbox 360 - Engadget

From the above link:
Update: We've been flooded with email from well-meaning geeks and even Microsoft; just about everyone wants to help us hook up Jonathan. We totally appreciate the sentiment, but we've got this covered. We think we've gotten in touch with his family (who let us know he never got an Xbox, and the whole thing really was a prank on the poor kid); once we know for sure we have the right people we'll post again.

Yeah sure, then his disgusting family will just take it and sell it to buy crack or something. I hope someone hunts them down and kicks their a$$es.

except the part that says "the kid's shining example of an older brother (who uploaded the video) claims that they actually did get him the console, and that he'd eventually upload the video of the "real" unwrapping. He never did. Right."

so the brother was suppose to have sent it in and hasnt

I hate to say it but this kind of thing probably contributes to the kids that grow up and have the emotional problems and go off on a rampage and takes it out on others. I hope this little one doesn't grow up to be bitter and I hope he realizes his family were a bunch of asses and he can overcome it and make himself a better person then they are.

Okay I agree that this is a cold thing to do to a child
but why the assumption that the mom or family is on crack?

Because only someone whose brain and emotions are addled by some drug that makes people so cuckoo that they would think something so depiscable would be funny would do a thing like this.

I can think of no other explanation. It is so non-understandble to most people I can even hear abusers, neglecters, and people who have no business being parents saying "what the F&*#!!!" to this that's why.

Really?
You think only someone on crack makes bad decisions and plays stupid pranks?

For goodness sakes, the child received winter clothes. I'd say receiving the clothes would be more important than an XBox. Some kids don't get either one.

I think it was a terrible judgement made here on the part of the parents and the people involved. No question about that. It was a stupid joke, made at the expense of the child.
Parents sometimes make bad calls.
Crack is not THE reason for that.

The only thing I can think of as to why his family did this and posted it on the internet was in hopes that someone would feel sorry for the little boy and possibly email them to buy an Xbox for the kid.

Crack is not THE reason for that.

I constantly wonder at the lives of posters who pick arguments on message boards with strangers about random comments made about people that presumably nobody here knows.

Yes I am stupid so I only think people on crack made bad deicisions. Du-uh duh duh I am so stupid I am surprised I figgered out how to use this talking picture porn box.

And it more than a stupid prank. It is a snapshot into the life of this poor child. If you cannot afford an XBOX you do not put sweaters in the box and give it to child. That is just plain cruel. It's not just a stupid joke if they can treat this poor boy this bad on Christmas and put it online for the whole world to see then how kind do you think are to him the rest of the year? Do they strike you as nurturing people who encourage this child's dreams? Who compliment him? Who help him with his homework? "You know we anin't got no money for no XBOX" I believe she said. Did anything about this video give you any faith or hope that this child will not grow up and knock you on the head or something? What kind of future does this child have?

Exactly. This is a snapshot. I'm sure there are many of us here that have had a moment or moments in our lives where we have made dumb calls or reacted inappropriately.

I don't disagree. I made a comment about that already above.

Well like you said, this is a snapshot. I can't base this kids present (nor future) life with his parents and family on that. And I certainly can't say they are on crack and that's why he did not get an XBox.

Who cares if I make the assumption? Are you upset that I might be insulting crack users by aligning this family with them? Or are you upset that I said people in this family might use crack? Are they personal friends? I mean, who are you defending?

Just curious why it matters to you that I said they would buy "crack or something."

LOL. So they have to be my friends in order for me to question why you assume they are on crack?

You wrote something on a message board that I felt was a bit odd. I questioned it.
See, I was "just curious" too.
