Devastating job loss

Today I sit here devastated.

My uncle Bob started an electrical company in 2005 with a partner Larry. I joined them in starting the office in Oct. We built the office from scratch, files, computers, everything. 3 years I put my heart and sole in this company. Seen the company through good and bad. My first job I woke up everyday and enjoyed going to.

Fast forward to the past 3 months... Bob and Larry started having issues working together and decide to split. Bob sent Larry a buy out offer and Larry came back and stated he would buy Bob for that amount. Long and short I show up to work yesterday and all the computers, files everything missing out of the office. Larry will not return my calls so basically I don't have a job anymore. I sent my time in and Larry emails me with Don't go to work I sent you a letter today. How unprofessional is that? I am devastated to say the least and don't know where to go next!

I'm sorry it turned out this way for you. Despite your feelings, be assured something better is around the corner. You just can't see it yet. Hang in there, because somewhere down the line, this whole experience will allow you to help somebody else. Been there myself & I just couldn't see the open window because I was so focused on the closed door. Take a brief respite and then begin looking for something else.

I am so sorry. Hugs to you. It really is devastating. Give yourself a some time to mourn but it is amazing how these things do lead to something much better than you could ever imagine. Its easy to wallow in this kind of situation but I am sure something much better is waiting for you . You just have to keep your eyes open and find your next chapter. Learn your lesson and grow from it.

DH was laid off a while ago. I had a newborn and lots of bills piled up from that. We weren't sure if we would be able to COBRA so the thought of no health insurance really terrified me. The house needed major repairs and we weren't sure if we were ging to be able to cover our Mortgage and eat. It really looked bleak. He then got a better job than we could imagine and things really turned around. We look back now and say it really was the best thing that happened to us. If it had not happened then, the new job would not have been available and he would be stuck there still. He was under paid and the environment at the old office was horrible. We needed that push to get us going in the right direction.

How awful for you! At least when you are laid off you usually have some type of notice, this must be such a shock for you. Will you be able to collect unemployment?

I am so sorry! Often, partnerships can be nasty when the friendship goes sour You should be able to collect unemployment, although I know that doesn't ease the pain entirely. I will keep you in my thoughts...

What a jerk the partner was!

Did Uncle Bob give you any indication that this was going to happen? Remember that Uncle Bob got $$$ from Larry and obviously left you out in the cold, which IMO was pretty underhanded, considering you helped build the business up. So is the business continuing but just at another place? Or did Larry buy Uncle Bob out and close it up? I would definitely file for unemployment. But I think I'd be talking to 'Uncle Bob' and asking him some questions about what provisions he made for you in the deal with Larry when Larry bought him out.

Yes I should be able to get my unemployment with no problem. I received a letter today from Larry that states my services were no longer needed at this time. I knew it was coming after the buy out agreement arrived last week however I did not think it would be in this way. I never thought he would treat me like that after 4 years of hard work. Uncle is trying to protect me as well and he has done a good job of it. I appreciate all of your support. I just needed to get this off my chest.
