One great gift card frustration

I recieved a visa one great gift card a year ago. Went to check the balance and 350 days from the day it was purchased they deducted a 2.00 monthly charge. The card states that beginning the 13th month they start this monthly charge. So I called adn they were going to reverse the charge (but was told to not use the card until they had this fixed.) Well I looked today and they reversed the 2.00 charge BUT they took off a charge for March. I am so frustrated. The guy on the phone said I bought this in December of 07 even though it was Feb. (computer even shows Feb. purchase) What a mess, I can't believe I spent over an hour arguing over 2.00. Guess I am going out to spend this now!! That is what I get for putting it in a safe place and forgetting about it! Any one else had this happen?

Yep, and I decided it wasn't worth arguing, so I immediately dumped all that remained on the card into an Amazon gift certificate. Otherwise, you end up with $1.14, or some other amount that's too small to spend left. My company used to give these cards out sometimes, but stopped, for no reason they'd tell. If nothing else, you can keep the card, and use the number for free offers that need a credit card, where you figure it might be hard to cancel. I used mine to try eMusic, which turned out to be not too hard to cancel.

I think some states have made this illegal, but I don't know which ones. They used to do this on AMC movie cards but I guess there were so many complaints that they stopped. At least that's what I heard. I always try to use any cards up quickly. Even if I have to buy something and then return it for a refund.

I think most gift cards have a monthly fee after a certain amount of time.

California is one of the states. Gift certificates cannot expire either, even if they have an expiration date on them. I got into an arguement with a gal at a local nail salon over a gift certificate that had expired and she didn't want to take it. Luckily the manager was there and agreed that she had to take it.

I noticed a blurb in the paper about Sharper Image gift cards, I had never realized this before but since Sharper Image has declared bankrupty you cannot use one of its gift cards. I hadn't thought about that. I was planning on starting to get Home Depot gift cards and just keep saving them for when I bought my house but you never know when a company could file for bankruptcy and then you are stuck with the cards. GC are considred debt so I guess you get in line with the rest of the creditors. All the more reason to use them quickly.

Hint though if you have a GC for a store that is going to expire and you don't want to spend it yet, buy a new gift card with it.
