What is your favorite Salad Dressing? Tried any new ones lately?Low Sodium?

My DH and I were looking for some low sodium salad dressing the other day and I had bought a couple of the Wishbone Salad Spritzers and I don't think they are all that bad but hubby didn't like the Italian one and I have a Raspberry Blitz one and I can eat either one of them but he is kind of picky. I am trying to cut down on salt because he just got put on blood pressure medicine. He isn't minding very well on what he is suppose to do either

I haven't tried those spritzers.....not sure if I will. They just don't look appealing to me. My fave is ranch dressing, but it has to be Hidden Valley. I won't eat Kraft's ranch or any other brand ranch. Picky yes but it's what I like. My girls love the ranch too (of course they eat it with almost everything, not just on their salads!!). Dh on the other hand likes to put 2 dressings on his salad, usually ranch and catelina. Blech. If we go out to eat and the restaurant has a parmesean peppercorn ranch dressing I will have that on my salad, but otherwise plain ole ranch for moi.

I refuse to buy most store dressings as most contain High Fructose Corn Syrup. It is very easy to make your own salad dressings using condiments you most likely have in the fridge.

Cooks Recipes | Salad Dressing Recipes Page 1 at CooksRecipes.com

Believe me it will be more delicious, less fatty, more nutritious and hopefully nobody here puts corn syrup in their food.

Maple Groves makes a really good variety of salad dressings. My favorite is their Vidalia Onion, it only has 10 calories per serving (2 Tbs) and is soooooo good.

Looking at the bottle I see there's only 140 mg of sodium (6% RDA) and it contains no HFCS.

Full Circle also has a good variety of "healthier" salad dressing, too. Might want to check them out as well!

Idon't like most of the low-calorie salad dressings, but I do think the spritzers are very, very good. My favorite is the balsamic.

I like Greek dressing. I think it's either Ken's or Wishbone. I don't remember which. It's really good!

I have been on a kick with balsamic vinagrette lately. Looks kinda yucky, but nice and light on the salad.

I love ranch, but, have been trying to steer away from anything with HFCS, so I've been using olive oil and a little vinegar.

I second making your own... You can have complete control over the salt if you make it from scratch plus it tastes so good!

I'm old fashioned - I love French. If I can't get french my 2nd choice is Caesar's -- with all the fat and sugar they can put in it.

Not to start *anything* but what is *wrong* with HFCS? I'm honestly just curious...

Raised by parents who drilled proper nutrition into my head, I now try to live by moderation so don't quite know what the latest research is.

My guess is that it's that HFCS is "empty" calories - sugar carbs - and many try to avoid them in these days of high-protein, low-carb diets....but that's just my guess.

HFCS Article

Another HFCS Article

I try to avoid it as much as I can but I still eat some things that contain HFCS (Yoplait Light Yogurt, for instance). I think you're right on track, Cuthie, when you say that moderation is the key.

What I like to do is mix ranch with Italian dressing. I guess that would cut down on the HFCS.

The list of recipes is a great resource---thanks so much. I do agree that making it yourself is a great idea---no chemicals, extra sugar or salt

The Double Danger of High Fructose Corn Syrup

(I tried to paste article in but it's too long)

(HFCS metabolizes through the liver. It should NEVER be eaten when it's listed among the first five ingredients. It has nothing but negative effects on the body unlike fat and carbs and salt and sugar which do have a place in our diets)-Anna

I've been using the Salad sprays for a long time now, and am now addicted to Ken's Honey Mustard salad spray. I don't like my salad dripping in dressing. Just a smidge of flavor is ok for me.

I'm with Crittles--I mix Italian (usually Zesty Italian) with ranch (but at least I use lite ranch ). My DH and both kids think I am nuts, but I love it!

I make my own celery seed dressing. 1 c. Mayo, 1/2 c sugar, 1/4 c apple cider vinegar and a dash of celery seed. I keep it made up all the time and use it for deviled eggs, egg salad, tuna salad, macaroni salad, waldorf salad, and for tossed. It rocks!

Thanks for the replies on NFCS...

I make my own ranch dressing.

The key of course is buttermilk. I use equal parts buttermilk (1/2 cup), sour cream (1/2 cup), and mayo (1/2 cup) then mix. I use lowfat mayo and sour cream but regular can be used!

Then I start adding seasonings: garlic powder, onion powder, cracked black pepper, parsley flakes and anything else that grabs my fancy -- but these are THE necessary spices!

Wisk or shake in a salad dressing shaker (I have the Hidden Valley Ranch one! but Tupperware makes one as well...) and then let it sit for a couple of hours before serving.

This does have to be stored COLD and used by expiration dates on the sour cream/buttermilk.

I actually do add a little bit of salt but you sure wouldn't have to since the mayo has some salt in it or maybe your tastebuds are accustomed to low salt?

It takes less than 5 minutes to make it.

I just picked up a bottle of Trader Joe's Fat Free balsamic vinaigrette and it is so delicious! Not real vinegarry. I am making pear walnut salad tonight (if the pears have ripened up enough).

Trader Joe's has a great selection of dressings that have good ingredients.

This recipe sounds good. I always wanted to make my own salad dressing, but never got my hands on any recipes. My favorite salad dressing is Kraft South Beach Ranch dressing. The sodium is 300mg per serving. I think that's alittle high. I usually measure my dressing portions, though. Anyone got any other homemade salad dressing recipes to share?
