What do you wear?

Just wondering what people wear in different areas to do the same mundane tasks.

What do you wear on a Saturday morning if you have 2 or 3 quick errands to run right in town?

Do you need to have make-up on?

Would you have your hair all done, or will you be in a baseball cap (or other)?

Are you possibly wearing sweats?

Myself, I'm probably wearing some frumpy pull-on stuff, but I'd be sure my hair is neat, and I am at least wearing my concealer and lipstick. That's probably it!

My standard uniform almost every day: jeans and a t shirt/tank/long sleeve...depending on the weather. I do my hair (5 min to do) and light makeup (cover up mostly and maybe mascara and lipstick). I don't wear hats/caps and I don't own any sweats....hate them and don't think I've ever seen a person look nice in them

Jeans and teeshirt... powder, eye shadow, and mascara. Hair done but it's easy and takes less than 10 minutes?!

I dress this way every day unless I'm subbing, then I dress up!

Hair and makeup always done - but makeup is eyeliner, blush, mascara and eyeshadow. I don't wear foundation, powder or lipstick.

I either wear jeans and a cute teeshirt/long sleeve shirt/sweatshirt/fleece shirt depending on weather or a nice sweatsuit - pants & matching jacket with a shirt under.

Usually jeans & a polo shirt and always make up. I work at a school and also live in the same neighborhood as the school is. I always and I mean ALWAYS see either a student or a parent or several of each and I'll be dammned if they're gonna see me with a naked face! LOL. Hair is normally straight anyway so its either down or up in a pony tail.

makeup, hair normally done, of course all I do, is wash it and put gel in it and scrunch the curls and away I go.
Sometimes its still wet when I leave.

I wear sweats usually on the weekend. Not the cheapy kind, I have some cute sweat suits I wear.

I don't like clothes much and usually just wear a long tshirt or nightshirt and nothing else unless I'm getting company.

90% of the time I don't like going out to run errands if my hair and makeup aren't done...You never know who you might run into!...And experience has led me to believe that no matter what, when I've looked my absolute worst, I've run into someone from high school that I haven't seen in twenty years...or an old boyfriend...LOL It seems that when I look and feel great, I see no one that I know. Murphys Law I guess. Anyway, back to the question at hand... I usually will have on something comfortable like sweats or jeans and a sweater if it's cold out. ~Lisa

To run errands, I usually wear jeans and t-shirt. My hair is always pulled in a clip. I have long hair (up to my mid-back) so I like it out of my way when I'm running errands and cooking. I usually go without make-up, too.

Hair done at leat blow dried and put back with a band if not straightened. At least cover up and foundation and lip gloss if not full make up. If wearing sweats I only own matching cute fashionable modern sweats that are outfits and I wear mules or boots depending on the weather. I never flats or athletic shoes unless going to the dog park, doing yard work or going camping. Even my flip flops (which I might be wearing this Saturday to do these errands) are platform flip flops.

Frumpy? Me? NEVER. There is no need for anyone to ever be frumpy these days.

Don't be a shlumpadinka!
Are You a Shlumpadinka?
With the internet and a global economy it is no longer out of anyone's financial reach to look modern and cute. It doesnt' matter how old you are what size you are or what your budget it.

Dr. Phil.com - Shows - "What's Age Got to Do with It?"

It's not hard work and it's not costly. It's fun and we all know that looking better not only give others a better impression but also or maybe because it also makes us feel better.

You never know who you might see or what opportunities might be knocking. And taking time for yourself enhances your life in numerous ways.

Long jeans in the winter, jean shorts in the summer. Nice pullover. Ballcap and ponytail. Moisterizer only.

Sweats?? I don't think so. Not with this body.

Well I guess I would have to admit I AM a shlumpadinka! At this point in my life it isn't my priority. I don't have the money to spend on more fashionable clothes and I have a terrible time finding shoes that are comfortable, I don't care so much if they are "cute" as how they fit. If someone wants to judge me by my clothes they can go right ahead! Those that do that wouldn't understand the toll that the time spent taking care of my disabled son takes on me. If they only care about my outside they can go right ahead and think what they want!! You never know what other's lives are like or what they are going through. I notice when other Moms at school seem to be looking down at me because of what I am wearing or that my hair isn't done but I am guessing that they didn't get up as early as I did just to get their child ready for school nor do they endure the lack of sleep that I do on an ongoing basis. At first it bothered me but they are also the same people that are uncomfortable seeing a child in a wheelchair.

I guess I am watching too much "What not to wear!" I think people treat you a certain way based on your appearance. I also have 4 teenaged children. I try to always look decent. Earrings, mascara and usually jeans - sometimes nice sweats (athletic pants). I work at one job that is very cold in the winter so during the winter I am more likely to dress for warmth than fashion - but I try to always look nice!

I feel for you. It is really hard to pull it together on the outside when you've obviously got "bigger fish to fry," as my sister likes to say.

And I'm right with you on the shoe thing - comfort is my number one priority!

The reason I even asked this question is that I like to know what emphasis people put on how they look when they are on their "down" time, but might also get *caught* - and I personally find it hard to strike a balance.

I find that when I'm in certain areas of the country, a certain level of "glam" might be expected all the time. I was wondering if this would ring true through the responses on this board. In my New England town in the winter, I think anything goes! But I personally *feel* better if I have my hair looking neat, and my lipstick and concealer. That's all I need, and it takes less than 2 minutes for these personal little requirements of mine.

Please don't feel judged. I do hope you get a little time for yourself each day. I think everyone needs that!

It's hard because people DO judge you by what you wear and what you look like! Most are not thinking that you don't get a break or even time to get your hair cut, or can afford clothes. We live in a materialistic society that doesn't place value on the inside or what we do with our lives or for others. I'm sure there are Moms out there that do what I do and still manage to look wonderful....it's just not happening here! I'd love to have a reason or the opportunity to dress nicer!

I am forever running out to the grocery or Kmart which both are just right down the road and I would never think of even stepping out my door without hair done and full makeup and wearing my jewels. I will wear sweats and jeans and t-shirts but they aren't ragged ones. I also believe that the moment you take off looking like a mess, you'll run into those folks from high school that you haven't seen for 20 or 30+ year. I am even hesitant about mowing my yard without hair done and makeup because I live on a highway and quite often when people see me out they will pull in to talk. And we need to think about if we got hurt and needed to go to the ER. I guess this all comes from working in advertising and no matter where I go, I see my clients.

I am sorry you feel judged. What it comes down to for me is not being materialistic but looking the best I can at all times. And stores like JCP, Fashion Bug and many others have not only 50% off sales but racks and racks of clearance clothes that are still in style, very very cheap and usually included in many of the sales so you can even get B1G1F on the clearance items. You must be buying clothes somewhere? Why not cute ones?

I don't mean to be petty but I really can't understand if someone is right there buying clothes why not go to the cute fashionable rack instead of the shlumpadinka rack?

I can see that you are overloaded and busy however I think also that it is an absolute neccessity that you take some time every day for yourself. Even five minutes to curl or straighten your hair. It's not just for the "judging" of others. It is to feel good. Maybe you are judging yourself more harshly than others they must know you are caring for a disabled child.

If you can somehow find a few minutes a day to "fix yourself up" you will feel better and that reflects inside to being a bit happier and more confiedent which in turn makes you a better mother, wife, sister, daughter, sister, friend.

One thing that really helped me is Bradley Bayou's book "The Science of Sexy" (unfortunate name in my opinion, it helps you look good not sexier per se)

Amazon.com: The Science of Sexy: Dress to Fit Your Unique Figure with the Style System that Works for Every Shape and Size: Bradley Bayou: Books

I would never wear sweats to the store - we consider them pajamas or lounge-at-home wear. I will wear jeans and a nice top. I usually wear regular shoes or boots but sometimes I will wear my flip flops or crocs. I always wear make-up and most times will fix my hair or at least fluff it up.

amyzboyz... in the area that I live in, no one would look down at you for the way that you are dressed. I can't imagine that people would do that anywhere but I'm sure that they would given what I have observed over the years!

I know for a fact that it is very difficult for you having a severely handicapped child. I don't know that any of us can really relate at any level unless we've lived a day in your shoes. Like the others, I hope that you are able to find a little time for YOU each day. I am sure that your son would want that for you as well even though he might not be able to express it.

Your self-esteem sounds as though it has taken a beating... hopefully, you can find the strength to pull yourself through and remember that ultimately, your health is all that you have. Your mind can play games with you -- you can't allow it to do that!

Kudos to you! My hat's off... Take care of you.

Jeans and a t-shirt, or sometimes a denim skirt, or black BDU pants, depending on what I'll be doing that day. Moderate makeup (powder, mascara, gloss), hair brushed and sometimes tied back. I tend to wear flip flops or hiking boots for comfort.

My preference is to look clean, but not sexy. Unless you're in Scottsdale, it is possible to overdress in AZ, and I'm not looking for attention.

I hate seeing people in pajama pants, because it's typically part of the trying hard to look messy look, and that annoys me. I've never judged someone for wearing sweatpants or having messy hair, especially if she's got a kid or two attached to her.

Cool

I hope you all never have to run to the emergency room or the hospital and not be "dressed at your best". Why that would just be tragic!

One Saturday morning last summer our neighbor's little boy (2 years old) fell in the rocks in their driveway. Of course his mom panicked and ran over to my house. I literally had time to grab my purse and my cell phone and shove on flip flops before I ran out the door to drive them to the emergency room. I had been cleaning my house (Saturday morning ritual) and had taken a shower that morning, put on shorts and a tank top, not did my hair, no makeup, etc. But you know what? My neighbor didn't care and neither did the nurses or doctors at the emergency room.

And last summer I also ran bottled water to our fire dept. when they had a bad house fire and it was 102 degrees in the shade and 100% humidity. And you know what - again I had on shorts and a tank top and no fireman there even complained once about what I was wearing - they were just glad to have drinking water after fighting a fire in the heat.

I think it is all a matter of perspective. Yes I do my hair if I am going shopping, etc. But not to mow the lawn - heck no. Those cows in the field next to my house don't care at all if I do my hair. Some people really need to get a real life.

Just because people have different opinions about personal appearance doesn't mean they don't have a real life. I am sure many of those of us like me who care about our appearances do lots of things for other people. We volunteer at social service agenicies, we help at our children's and grandchildren's schools, we pack holiday boxes for families we don't know.

Yes it is a matter of perspective. Just like keeping a neat clean home. Which I also do. My home and myself are neat, clean, and as up to date as possible. Hopefully that will never change. My Mom God bless her is in her 70s and she is a beautiful cultured intelligent religious woman. She also keeps up her appearance and wears modern clothes and hairstyles.

Nobody complains about what you are wearing when you are delivering H2O to a house fire that's right. And I really don't think other people judge you other times either. I honestly believe that most of us judge ourselves way more harshly than others do.

If you don't care about how you look that is fine for you. Just because some of us do care does not take away from other things in our lives as a matter of fact it enhances it or we would not bother.

Not to sound snarky but...I don't think that any of us on here would care what we looked like if we had to run someone to the emergency room or to help out in another emergency situation...At least I know I wouldn't...But just because someone wants to feel good about themselves by looking nice, it doesn't mean that they don't have a life...quite the contrary as annadrose pointed out above...If I did have a disabled child to care for or an elderly parent, etc...I'm sure that my priority wouldn't be so much on how I dressed or if I had makeup on...That would be the least of my concerns...But while I'm not in that situation thank God, I do feel better if I take some pride in looking halfway decent and not like a slob. ~Lisa

as long as someone doesnt have have bugs and stink like a skunk then it doesnt matter, people should quit judging people on how they look and treat them as a fellow human being. Just because I dont have to have the IN thing and cutsie clothing doesnt mean I dont care about myself or others, it means I have other things more important to me. I could not stand to go to have my nails done or sit in the beaty shop for an hour, i have more important things to do and no way could I just sit there. read about the celebs, this ones too fat, oh my this ones too thin, oh look at that dress it's so last year pffftt whatever heheh

I am not buying new clothes...if there's extra it's going towards medical bills. I'm not out shopping either. When I have bought new clothing I am not looking for things that are "cute". I look for what works while caring for my son and things that will hold up. That's why nurses and medical professionals wear things like scrubs and comfortable shoes. I shower and I'm clean but I have to have someone take over for me while I do that. Typically I'm jumping in and jumping out before my husband leaves for work or I would not get a shower. It's not like people are beating my door down to volunteer to take over for me even for a few minutes. I guess it's that it gets frustrating to me that what my clothes look like or my hair or shoes determines how others perceive me. My self esteem has taken a beating......I get tired of the stares at my son in a wheelchair or the guy that yelled at us the other day because I politely asked him if he would mind moving (he was standing in the only handicapped space), or the Mom that told her child not to play with my son while waiting at the Drs office.

For the people that think they need an excuse to look nice, how about yourself? Why not look good for your own self esteem? Moms tend to get into a rut and think nothing of letting their appearance go down the toilet claiming there's no time or money for them to look nice. As another poster pointed out, a person has to buy clothes at some time or another. Why not buy something that's functional and cute? It takes a few minutes to apply enough makeup to look like you care about your appearance. Show some respect for yourself.

dont have to have makeup and cutsie clothes to have respect for yourself. I dont like makeup it's not cheap and the kids would just get into it anyway, like the shampoo i cleaned out of the bathtub today. i dont need cutsie clothes to stay at home cleaning, watching tv or whatever. and alot of the stuff I see people in i just dont like. it's not me sorry

Well to each their own but as long as I am capable of functioning for myself (which if like my Mom will be as long as I am breathing) and I have a choice I will be doing my best to look as good as I can and keep myself beautiful. There's no shame in it.

And I walk tall and proud in my heels and yes I can and have run in them and yes they are comfortable that's why I try on so many pairs to find the cutest most comfortable ones.

I am also college educated, have raised a son who has never been in trouble, and spend plenty of time "contributing to the world in general and my community specifically".

To each their own.

Of couse there's no shame in your choosing to dress or look a certain way. And maybe you don't judge others on their appearance simply because you are able to do those things....there's plenty of people who do. Just because some are able to do that they seem to jump to the conclusion that it's an option for anyone and that they are somehow better because they do it.

I too am college educated and never expected for my life to be spent this way. It has nothing to do with intelligence or education. I never expected to have a child born with a disability...it can happen to anyone and anyone can become disabled...most people don't plan for it and I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else but reality is that it will.

I don't know why I think that sharing my perspective might result in others possibly changing their thinking. The shame is not in you choosing to dress a certain way....the shame is in those that look down on others because they don't or can't.

What do you wear on a Saturday morning if you have 2 or 3 quick errands to run right in town? Jeans or my lounge pants, depends on how (bloated I am from my meds) A comfy cotton shirt or t shirt.

Do you need to have make-up on? I don't even wear makeup to work

Would you have your hair all done, or will you be in a baseball cap (or other)? Hair goes in a ponytail but if I go to the farmer market (whenever it gets warm again) I will wear a ball cap (for sun protection with my eyes)

Are you possibly wearing sweats? No way!!! BUT I do admit that I wear sweats over my work pants coming to and from work. I ride the bus and get so very cold.

Funny, people's differences of opinions! I'm wearing a sweat suit right now - a cute kind, not the fleece-type pants with elastic ankles, but a velvet-type fabric with a matching jacket and shirt. I feel totally comfortable and have already ran several errands this morning.

On the other hand, I would never wear (or even own) a pair of crocs!

I wonder....if the way we dress (and those answering different ways on this thread) has anything to do with age. I know I cared a whole lot more about being stylish & trendy years ago. I'm now 43, married 18 years, 2 kids, SAHM and don't have the need to dress the way I used to. I used to work for IBM - a lot different than a SAHM. I think most people reach a certain point in their lives where they no longer care what other people think - and I don't mean that in a negative way, just an older, wiser, other priorities, come-into-yourself type of way. I could be wrong, who knows. I know there are always exceptions to every rule.

Wow. I can't believe you've never seen them.

Lot's of people wear them around here. Some are a velvety-type material, some are a slick-type of material (mine is adidas) but it's not that nylon kind, it's something else. I am not a fabric expert so I don't know what they are. I just know every day you see people out and about in sweat suits. But they're not an athletic outfit - they're a casual outfit. You'd not see someone working out in them. Very comfy & cute.

I think certain yoga-style pants (sweats?) can look nice with the right top. You have to be able to wear them though. To quote cashchik, spandex is a privilege, not a right.

See when I think of the velvety material I think of 80's velour pants suits and I wouldn't call them "cute". I wouldn't classify them as "sweats" just like I wouldn't call yoga pants sweats either.

Are you talking about something like this: Puma :: Puma Women's Embroidered Velour Suit (ID#: 546507-02) :: SPORTSANDSTYLE.com

I wouldn't call it sweats and I don't think it's cute...but I'm probably in the minority I suppose...

SteinMart, JC Penneys, and Kohls carry alot of "cute sweats"...New York Laundry makes some nice ones...There are whole entire departments devoted to them in the store...Not the sweatshirt type material ones...DH jogs and I sometimes sleep in that type when I'm really cold...You've never seen them?...They are very stylish, comfortable, and great if you are a SAHM. And lisacb, I'm with you about the crocs...I'd never own a pair and wouldn't be seen in them...they are so ugly. ~Lisa

Yeah, the one I'm wearing today is similar to that, but not exactly. I looked and it's 70% cotton/ 30% polyester. I got it at Kohls and I can't find it on their website.

The one I wore yesterday is similar to this, but black. It's polyester.

adidas - Women's Apparel: Warm Ups: 3-Stripes Warm-up

Alot of people around here wear different styles of them.

Ah, thanks for the link and pic.

I would only wear something like that at the gym. I don't see a lot of people wearing them around town

My mom (70YO) wears those velour sweats. For now, not my style.

As for the athletic apparel, I think those are OK on people who might actually see the inside of a gym every once in awhile. There's something about them that I think looks a little bit silly as suburban mom attire worn with perfectly-coifed hair and lots of makeup.

I guess I agree with sexysmurf on this one. Nothing wrong with them, I don't turn up my nose or think any less of anyone, just not my style.

I have NEVER looked down on anyone for how they dress let's just make that clear right now. I never said that nor did I mean to imply such.

There are lots of cute sweat outfits out there. I get some at Fashion Bug which has clothes of all styles.

Part of it might be age and having lived. I am almost 50 yrs old I look 35 and I raised a son mostly alone in a time when there was no internet. There were not many 50% off or B1G1F sales. I wore second hand things while I bought new for my son. I worked two or three jobs and did my best with what was available. Now I am the Mom of a dog and a cat and a husband. I still work two jobs but instead of raising a son I am paying a mortgage. I have the internet and all sorts of resources available to me. I make use of them all. I don't spend extra as a matter of fact with careful planning and budgeting I can buy things for up to 70 or 80% off still in style. Looking good is a priority for me. Being a good person is a priority for me. The two are not exclusive.

I looked over my posts and if there are any that imply that I judge someone as a less than worthy person or stupid or something for the way they dress then please accept my apology. I did not mean it. I am only trying to help in my own dumb somewhat maybe clueless way when I ask why not go over to the next rack over and buy something cute and functional? I am only trying to help when I say take some time out for yourself.

I know there is no need to apologize to "strangers" on a message board but I really do feel for you. I wish there was something I could do to give you a break or help you get some positive-ness going in your life. We have all had or are having hardhsips in our lives and somehow we all could use some support now and then. I thank God for the people who have given me encouragement, financial assistance, and fun throughout the years.
