Share your Drive Thru, scratch your head moments

Okay, first a disclaimer. I applaud anybody who works in fast food. Not an easy job.

Tonight, stopped off at Sonic to pick up something for one of the kids. Was wondering why the one car ahead of me was taking sooooooo long to order. Finally after about 10 minutes I finally move up to order. I order a kiddie grilled cheese and a dc. The cashier tells me, uh that is $6.89...huh???? I said a kiddie grilled cheese is 2.89 not 6.89. She said oh that was for two, No I ordered 1. Okay that was two she said 6.89... Once again, I repeated no that was one. Finally convinced her I ordered one. Then she tells me, AWH, "Do you want cheese in your sandwich?" Do I want cheese in my sandwich, I ordered a grilled cheese. Yes, do you want cheese in your sandwich. I said, I ordered a kiddie grilled cheese. Once again she repeated do I want cheese in the grilled cheese sandwich.... Finally convinced her it was a Grilled Cheese that I want and Yes, I do want cheese. Then she repeats the order and that was a Vanilla DC you want...no I want a DC no Vanilla... she does this 3 or 4 more times. At this point, I doubted I would get the order correct....she then once again repeats the incorrect total.... URGHHHHHH!!!!

SO what has been one of your scratch your head, drive thru moments?

This happened to me in Mesa, AZ back in 1998, and I STILL remember it.

Went through the KFC drive through, and ordered a bucket meal for the family. (you know, the chicken bucket with some sides)

The cashier told me, "I'm sorry, but we are out of chicken. Would you like to order the side dishes only?"

Another time we ordered a hamburger with no pickles at McD's. Opened it up, and it was just a bun with the condiments on it, no MEAT. Brought it up front and the cashier said, "Oh, I thought you said no meat on the burger." ???

When I had stopped at Taco Bell a few years ago, they used to have like a 6 pack of taco's. So for a cheap dinner when my daughter had friends over, I stopped in and bought 5 6 pack's of taco's. So that's 30 taco's figureing these could's could probably woof down 4 or 5 a piece. Meanwhile I'm the only one in the store and he asked me if it was for here or to go. I laughed at the kid, and said Do I look like I could eat 30 taco's? I just thought it was funny, but was one of those "had to be there" moments.

Its not just drive thru's, I went into a Dunkin donuts with my ds one morning before school and had ordered an ICED COFFEE with milk and equal. So we sat down in the store and began to eat. After I took a sip of my supposed ICED COFFEE, I realized the girl gave me iced tea with milk and equal (yuck). I went back up to the counter to the same girl and told her what happened. She asked me if I got it in that store! I said "HELLO YOU JUST WAITED ON ME, A MINUTE AGO" then argued with me that it is coffee. She then refused to make me a new one. So I asked to speak to a manager. The manager came out and decided to taste it! I can just imagine if it was coffee and I was wrong, would she have given it back to me after she drank it out of my straw!!! Never going back to that DD again!!

My youngest dd likes the McDonalds "Big Kids" hamburger meal.

For some reason they have a cheeseburger, hamburger & chicken nuggets kids meal, but only Cheeseburger & Chicken Nuggets "Big Kids" meal. My dd does not like cheeseburgers.

Most of the time I have no issues, but TWICE now, in 2 DIFFERENT McDonalds, I've ordered the Big Kids Hamburger meal and they told me they don't have hamburgers. What? It's McDonalds!!! I politely tell them I'll pay for the Cheeseburger meal, just keep the cheese. Are you able to use logic?

The 1st time he actually argued with me and when she opened it, it was a single hamburger. Well we had ordered and paid for a double cheeseburger (minus the cheese!). I was quite frustrated by the time I got her a double hamburger!!!

Why does it have to be so difficult??!!

On the flip side...I was behind a huge truck that had it's wheel height almost equal with the speaker and noisy muffler (if he had a muffer). This dooffus was yelling his order, the poor kid on the other side obviously could not hear the guy in the truck over the noise the truck was making. This went on for about 4 minutes when I actually got out of my car and suggested he turn off the truck and place his order. He did and we were finally able to move the line.

I went to Dairy Queen not too long ago and I got up to the window to get my stuff and I heard the lady tell the person behind me they just ran out of ice cream.I looked at her and said "Are you serious??" She said yes and they had called the other DQ to see if they could get some from them but they ran out too. Now I was happy I got my ice cream but I bet the person behind me was a little ticked!

That is the strangest thing, the weather was warm that day and I guess this time of year they didn't expect to be that busy so they didn't order enough.

Every time I go to get take out --I have to always check my food order after they give it to me. I had MANY MANY occasions when the order was wrong or incomplete, only to drive home and then if it was bad enough drive ALL THE WAY BACK. That's happened at almost every restaurant, chinese or fast food. It is annoying, but I guess I expect it now and just check my order.
What does annoy me is that frequently the person who hands me the order either closes the window and won't respond when I honk and wave....
or who looks annoyed at me and tells me to drive away while I am still checking my order.

I was at Arby's the other day (inside at the counter) and ordered a bacon lettuce and tomato market fresh sandwich. The order taker said "so you want a BLT?" Uh yes that's what I want lady.

I always have a problem with BK. My order is always the same, it's not difficult honestly but they can never get it right the first time. (and it doesn't seem to matter what state I'm in either! ) I always order a crispy chicken salad with ranch dressing. Simple right? OMG, you'd think I ordered Welsh Rarebit. I went to BK just last week and I went thru the drive thru, ok....I ordered the salad and she had to ask me 4 times what dressing I wanted. Even asked me again at the window. Handed me my stuff and as I pulled away I looked in the bag. NO DRESSING!!! So I had to pull into a parking spot, go in to BK and get the rest of my stuff.
Even last year when we went to the OBX, we stopped at a BK to grab some lunch to eat on the road. I had to tell the girl behind the counter many times what kind of chicken (for some reason she couldn't understand CRISPY....) and what kind of dressing. Even the guy bagging our food had to ask me 3 times what dressing I wanted. I WANTED TO SCREAM at this point. So we grabbed the food and left, headed down the road and I pulled out my salad. I got grilled chicken (which IMO makes the salad runny) and honey mustard dressing. WTF????

janenga - that must be a great salad, because with that kind of frustration I wouldn't go back.

It IS a great salad, that's what irks me to no end. A whopping 4 things they have to remember to put into the bag: the salad, the chicken, croutons and the dressing packet. I wouldn't even care if they forget the napkins and silverware (I eat at my desk so I always have forks handy), as long as they got the other stuff right! GAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I am reading all of these, and the memories all come back!!

Once, I went to Pizza Hut (sit down service) and ordered a 'plain' pizza. (to me, that would mean cheese) The server asked if we wanted cheese and sauce on it!!

Then some complaints about where I live - a college town in Kansas (where I don't really want to be) I have always lived in cities, or at least very close where you have a wide variety of restaurants, and more than 1 of the same, but not here, so if they are out of it, you are out of luck unless you want to drive at least a half hour or more. Now, I have to say I was kind of excited about moving here, because before this I lived in a small mountain town in ID for just over a year, and the only chain restaurant we had was Subway. So I was really excited about having DQ and BK, just 2 examples. The only thing I ever get at DQ is vanilla ice cream with cherry shell on it. Well, guess what? The owner of the DQ here doesn't carry cherry shell!! Just my luck. My problem with BK is they never have the kids toys for the kids meals, I have even called corporate about it, but nothing changes!!

DH keeps having a problem with Taco Bell. He likes the Taquitos and orders 2. He hears ( every time)

"So do you want one taquito or 4 ?"
DH: " No, I want 2!"
He went back and forth with one girl for about 5 minutes one day. He knows they cut them in half, which I can understand why she might think of 4, but with that reasoning how can he order 1?
oh, and then when his order was $x.99 she wanted the penny.....lol
He gave it to her just to see what would happen,....lol, and then she tried to give him change for a $20 instead of a $10, oy.

My favorite was trying to get a double cheeseburger @ McD, with ketchup only. DH just has to be difficult....lol
When she asked him what else he wanted on it he said "Cheese, of course", well, that got translated into a burger with ketchup and tartar sauce....eeeew

My girls like the happy meals (they get chicken nuggets) and sometimes they also like to have a plain cheeseburger with their happy meals. You wouldn't believe how many times I've gotten home to find a bun and a hamburger patty, no cheese (ya know cuz silly me ordered a PLAIN CHEESEburger.....). No big deal cuz I have sliced cheese at home but my god...oh and why is it when I do stop at Mickey D's on my way home I always have to wait for the fries? IT'S DINNER TIME PEOPLE, here's an idea.....HAVE SOME FRIES READY!!!!

(sorry for that little vent...... )

I think the funniest thing I remember, I was Pregnant and stopped at BK for some kind of Ice cream can't remember what kind. She handed me my Ice Cream and said " Would you like Ketchup with that" . It was so funny I just told her "NO thanks"

Sitting inside a McDonald's one day, I watched an employee walk outside to their car, open the door, come back toward the building, pick up trash on the ground, throw it away, walk straight into the serving area and start bagging food.....and I think she was a manager. She had touched her car, doors, trash, trash cans.....ewwwww.....I really wanted to go tell her to wash her hands....but I just threw away my food, left and haven't been back. I know worse things happen but when I see it, it bothers me.
My oldest gets her cheeseburger with mustard only.....usually it has mustard and ketcup and sometimes even pickles. My youngest gets ketchup only on her hamburger.....you can imagine the confusion we create with one cheeseburger/mustard only and one hamburger/ketchup only, LOL. Sometimes I just order and pay separately since it seems to be beyond most employees to put that in correctly!
We stopped at chick fil a a few nights ago, trying to beat the ice/snow storm home. I didn't check the bag since normally they're very good there. Got home to find no fries, no straws, no ketchup although we requested it. I can give them a break though because they never mess up!
janenga, we've had the plain cheeseburger problems also. At one point, my dd didn't eat mustard and I had to very specifically say "I want a cheeseburger with meat and cheese only, no pickles, no ketchup, no mustard, no onions, just meat and cheese on the cheeseburger". It worked sometimes.
Wendys....oh boy.....they are notorious for having part of the order ready and asking you to pull forward. So I sit there letting half of our food get cold while the other finally comes out. That happened a couple of times and I finally got smarter and told them to get all of my food together, make sure it was hot and then bring it to me. And yes, I check before I leave to make sure we don't have some cold fries and some hot ones. Just a pet peeve of mine. I have no problem waiting but please don't give me half of my food and 5 or 10 mins. later giving me the other half.

I know some people who don't eat meat and they have ordered a cheeseburger at McD's with no meat, that doesn't seem weird to me.

I have to say that after working in food service it is hard to make a special order. Especially at a busy time. You are trying to get the food out hot and fast and you get into a routine and most of the time forget to add something or leave something off. I swear we don't do it to make people mad.

We always order 6 kids meals when we get take out. It is always just me and dh that goes and gets the food and they always ask us if it is for here or to go. I sometimes just say , guess! Or I will look at dh and say well I can eat my 3 right now what about you?

I always make sure the order is right before we leave but if dh goes by himself he never does, and it is always my food the leave out or mess up!

I was at a BK once and was inside ordering and heard an order from the drive-thru where the customer asked for a whopper with ketchup only. The person taking the order could not get it straight:
Cashier: Do you want a bun?
Customer: Yes
Cashier: Do you want a hamburger?
Customer: Yes, with just ketchup.
Cashier: Do you want cheese?
Customer: No, just ketchup.
Cashier: So you want a bun with just ketchup on it?
Customer: No, I'd like the hamburger too.
Cashier: But you said you wanted just ketchup.

This went on and on and then it got the people working INSIDE confused. All of them were discussing it. It got to be funny so we were all in line just laughing. Finally, the person at the front of the line said "The person wants a hamburger on a bun that just has ketchup on it". They all looked at him like he was crazy!!

On the other hand, my sons used to work part-time at McD's during their teen years and you would be surprised at the dishonest people. One of my sons always ran the register and he was always telling us of people coming in giving him a $5 or a $10 bill and when he'd give them change, they'd claim they gave him a $20. He knew how to handle them. He'd say 'let me call my manager'. They would count the register right there in front of the person, with it always equaling out to what it was supposed to be. He said that would happen more frequently than you'd think.

And speaking of Sonic, I love their happy hour deals! As a matter of fact, the other week I stopped by there to get a small Cherry Slush and had forgotten it was happy hour, and the cashier reminded me I could get a medium or large for half price.

I am so glad someone else said this. As I'm reading some of these stories, I am laughing, but can also sympathize with the other side to a point. (Notice I said to a point).

When I worked at McDonald's during my high school years, people can just get mean and nasty and if you don't have a lot of self confidence anyway, that just makes you even more frustrated. Plus, they do NOT make the registers exactly user friendly. Don't get me wrong, b/c I have had my share of odd to me experiences. I do agree, there are people out there that do NOT want meat on their cheeseburgers or what not, especially during lent. It is really hard to tell someone that it will be a little bit for their food to be ready and they don't realize that it does take time for the food to cook. It isn't always ready when they get there if there was a rush of people right before them. I do remember another time during the summer, we had an extra, extra hot day and everyone came through and ordered ice cream cones. Our ice cream freezer/dispenser could not keep up with the demand and we had to tell people we couldn't sell until it froze again. Wow, I've never been cursed out so much in my life.

I think until a person does work in food service, it tends to make you a little nicer when dealing with these people. Granted there are some that are dumb as a box of rocks, don't get me wrong.

I have to agree with you. There are plenty of people that do order their sandwiches with no meat. You also wouldn't believe the combinations of things that people like- ketchup and tartar sauce, I have done that one before! Also, while you might not think someone needs to ask if you need a drink holder when you have 6 drinks and are by yourself, I have had people yell at me before when I had those drinks in a carrier that they didn't think they needed. It seems much easier to ask, then to potentially offend someone by just assuming. You would not believe how terrible customers can treat employees!

On the other side, I have worked with some of those people you have been talking about. I have worked with people who just really didn't get it to the point that there was no job that they could really do (not just well, but at ALL!).

This isn't really an odd moment, just an annoying "policy". Whenever I am at the local army base I have limited choices for lunch since I am a vegetarian. The only option is a Taco Johns. They charge an extra $.35 to replace the meat on the taco with beans. You'd think they should reduce the price by $.35!

At In-N-Out, that would be a grilled cheese. They're surprisingly good. I don't go through drive-throughs often, but was with a coworker a few weeks ago while he was trying to get a milk shake. Whataburger didn't have them at that time of night, so he ordered something I don't remember now. I think we'd been sitting at the window for 10 or 15 minutes, when I finally asked how long it had been, and we just left. I'd never had that happen before.

No big deal cuz I have sliced cheese at home but my god...oh and why is it when I do stop at Mickey D's on my way home I always have to wait for the fries? I guess we're smarter in Texas...LOL! JUST KIDDING! I always order my burgers with ketchup only and my daughter gets hers plain and dry and we never have a problem.
I have only had a problem once when we ordered plain and dry burgers...it was *many* years ago at Burger King. My dad ordered 3 burgers plain and dry and they came back with a bun and cheese. The kid at the register was so embarrassed that he misunderstood.

My biggest pet peeve lately is that every single time I go through a drive through and order Iced Tea, I always specify Un-Sweetened. I would say, that about 99% of the time it is sweet tea. Even if I ask as they hand it to me, they claim it's UNsweetened. I always taste it right then and it's usually wrong.

Then they act all put out when I ask them to give me unsweetened. I'm diabetic, and the amount of sugar in a large sweet tea would send my BG's through the roof! That is my biggest pet peeve.

The whole change thing drives me crazy too. Do they not teach kids how to count change in math class anymore? Like if you bill is 7.36 and I'll give them a 10 dollar bill and 6 cents. They look at me like I've sprouted an extra head and tell me I didn't give them enough change. Even after explaining it's so I only get back quarters and not pennies, etc they still don't get it. Drives me crazy. My first job was as a carhop and we carried those little change things on our hip. We did have time to run in and out to check the amount of change! I mean, how hard is it to count backward for the correct amount?
