Question Chicken Pox/Vaccine question

Can kids get chicken pox even if they've had the vaccine? My 8 year old has a rash of small red bumps all over her upper back, chest and edges of her face. Slight fever. I'm hoping she doesn't have it, but am not sure (It's been 11 years since my son had it) and can't get to the doc till morning.

Thanks!

Yes they can. It is supposed to be a milder case though.

Yes, my DS had the vaccine and came down with chicken pox a few years later. The doc said that thet vaccine does not prevent it, it just helps them not to get it easier than a child who did not have the vaccine.

I have a friend who gave both her kids the vaccine and they both came down with a full blown case - they said it's rare, but can happen.

Does she have any other cold like symptoms? Runny nose, etc.
Chicken pox usually manifests as almost pimple like "sores". And usually show up on the abdomen, "trunk" area first.

Google rashes and see if you can find one that matches her! I don't think what you're describing sounds like how I've seen chickenpox show up, but as we well know, every kid is different.

And yes, kids who get the chicken pox vaccine can get chicken pox, but it's usually a milde case and helps prevent some o the complications.

Just an FYI Nicole there has been a lot of cases of mysterious rashes in Fairfax County schools, my son told me they sent 10 kids home from the 3rd grade today and when I dropped by the clinic to drop-off his ensure shakes, the school nurse and aide both stopped me at the door and told me not to come in because of my immune system they said they thought the chicken pox or measles were going around the school, DS got hurt in PE busted his lip open and they wouldnt even let him in the clinic because of his comprmised immune system they treated him in the office instead. From living here all my life when Fairfax County Schools get something Prince William County/Manssas PArk schools arent to far behind in the same symptoms. Sending your DD get well vibes and prayers to get better.

FYI, when I took my daughter to the pediatrician for something a year ago, they told me that a 2nd dose of the chicken pox vaccine was recommended now!

My son just had Pityriasis Rosea:

Pityriasis Rosea-Topic Overview

It is a pain!! He had bad itchies!

He was also recommended the 2nd dose of the Varicilla (chicken pox) vaccine at his well child checkup last November.

And then it could possibly be 5th Disease:

"Early symptoms are similar to the flu-runny nose, sore throat, headache-and may be so mild that you don't notice them. The rash comes several days later, first on the face and later over the rest of the body. The rash usually fades within 2 to 5 days."

I had never heard of this until I worked at a nursery school. I had the rash and bumps and the other symptoms.

OH Lord! I had that when I was younger! And yes, it itches like crazy. At the time I had it, the Dr. said that the best thing for it was sunlight. Well, wouldn't you know it was the dead of winter! (and before tanning beds were all the rage!)

Christine, I hadn't heard of the the Fairfax rashes!

Lisa, thanks for asking. We went to the doctor and 2 of them looked at her. It's some kind of rash I can't pronounce or even spell. Not contagious but could last a few weeks they said. They said if she gets a fever over 100 or if they start to turn red or yucky to bring her back immediately b/c of the rounds of staph going around here in Prince William County.
