| I know this is going to sound cliche', but it's like anything else - you have to WANT to do it. My Mother has tried so many different stop-smoking methods. None have worked for her because she doesn't really WANT to quit. She hems and haws and basically skirts every issue - it's so obvious. Don't get me wrong, I know it's hard and if smoking weren't bad for you, I'd be puffing away right now! I have total sympathy for those that have quit or are trying, but it's so worth it on many levels. I quit because I was starting to have medically issues. My thoughts to myself were "Do I want to keep on feeling like this and ending up in the E/R for the rest of my life?" That was my personal push. My husband will say I quit because of him, hehe! But that's not the truth. It's almost impossible for most folks to do some major life improvement for someone else. I did use Nicorette. It's been about 10 years for me and they have different flavors now. It helped, but I think I just wanted so badly to quit, I probably could have done it without the Nicorette. The power of the mind is a very strong thing. How bad do you want to make that committment to yourself? I know, I just threw in some total cheese to this thread! LOL!! But, I do believe in it. My will to quit was what got me through.

Congrats Chelmo! I hope you can soon say "hey, I'm smoke free for a year now". It's not an easy thing to do, and yes, you HAVE to want to quit for anything to work. I have been smoke free since last May 25. I took the Chantix pills and I couldn't have done it without them. It sure is nice to not cough all the time. I do still get the urge quite often but after all this time I WILL NOT GIVE IN.

GREAT JOB!!! I still miss it after 9 years! I wasn't ready to quit at ALL, but I got an upper respiratory infection and it went right to my lungs, I couldn't inhale if I wanted. I had to go to the hospital for treatments and just figured I didn't have a cigarette for a whole day I might as well quit. I really wasn't ready, but I am SO glad I did. I got lucky, the decision was made for me pretty much.

| I too want to say CONGRATULATIONS!!! I did hypnosis 5 years ago this August after smoking for over 25 years and it worked for me. I tried many other times and would always start back up. I agree you have to really want to quit smoking. The nicotine leaves your system within 3-5 days, it's the habit of lighting up and actually smoking that is hard to break. The hypnostist told us one thing that I really believe worked for me and that is if you even THINK you can have just one, you will never be able to quit for good. I know to this day I can never have another cigarette and now can not even imagine wanting one. I have no desire nor do I miss them. I did do something totally different also and that is I did not give up my "habits" that I normally did while smoking. I did them without the cigarettes and I really believed that helped me. An example is every night before I would go to bed I would sit on our front porch (in all seasons) and have my last "smoke" of the day. I enjoyed this quiet time to reflect my day. After I quit smoking, I would still go sit on the front porch, but without the cigarette, after while I was able to quit doing that and haven't in years. Same thing at work. We would all step outside at 10:00 to have a smoke break, after quiting, I still stepped outside, just didn't light up. At first it was weird, but after while it was normal. I no longer do this, but at the time I needed to keep some kind of normalcy, plus I didn't want to miss out on too much gossip! Good luck and remember, never light up that first one and there will never be a second one!! |

Congratulations!!!!!!!!! I have never smoked but I can imagine how difficult it is to quit. Both of my parents were smokers. My dad eventually stopped because the doctor said either quit or die. Unfortunately, my mother never stopped and it was a contributor to her death in 2006. peapie |
