don't force him or he will rebel, that is one thing he is control of. Put cheerios in the potty and teach him to go on them. It is fun for them and teachs them to hit the spot at the same time. Unfortunaltely I didn't know that at the time. Have an older boy or man show him how it is done as ladies have no way of showing: that cleared it up for my son.

How about some songs?

I always made up silly rhyming songs for everything I taught my son. I tried thinking of some potty ones right now but I can't.

Also they love to imitate so anytime Mom or Dad or Uncle or big brother bo they should see it.

Some people swear by Cheerios to aim for.

potty training in our house was underwear and no diapers/pull ups except when we went out or overnight. They get the hang of it so much faster, yes its messier - no worse than cloth diapers. Make if a good thing...don't force, We use the bathroom every hour or so at the beginning, some kids like company in the bathroom, some like privacy. Both my girls were potty trained by 2 1/2 and my son was a few months earlier. I didn't do the standing up thing for my son first....just getting him to go was my goal. Daddy took care of that after he got the hang the bathroom.

Is he showing you signs that he is ready? 2yr old seems young for a boy.....most boys I know start around 2 1/2, any sooner and it seems like the mother is pulling her hair out. I only have a boy, but I have heard potty training a girl is so much easier!

I don't know about the Cheerios things, I just taught him to pee sitting down, once he accomplished that daddy took over. I never wanted to teach him to play in the bath room let alone but objects in the toilet.

Good luck!

We used a reward method for our boys once we knew they were ready. First, we tried to get them to use the potty to pee. They could throw a few Cheerios in the toilet and try to pee on them. It was fun for them.
Once we mastered that, we moved on to bowel movements. We went to the dollar store and we filled a bag with toys they picked out. We hung the bag on the door and each time they did poops in the potty they got to pick a toy. If they had accidents, that was okay. We just cleaned them up, said "oh well. Maybe next time." and just tried again next time.
It takes patience. Just remember, they grow up so fast. You'll look back on this and think "Wow, that was easy."

Here's my advice..........when your child says "Mom, I have to go to the potty", it's a good time to train them. Otherwise, you're pretty much training yourself to catch them when they have to go.

My DS was about 2 1/2.

My boys were a bit older as well and really only stopped having accidents when they started preschool.

As I recall, they ran around in underwear all day long, so the summer time was a good time to start.

Tell yourself, "This too will pass" as you are cleaning up the messes. It will happen. Your patience and perseverance will pay off.

My thoughts are with you. May it be a simple process with your son!

It really sounds to me like he might be a bit on the young side yet. Boys tend to train a little later than girls in general. The summer time idea is a good one too. Being like daddy can help too.

Anyway, I work at a library. We have tons of toddler books and cute childrens videos about learning to go on the potty. Have you tried your library?

At this point, you are probably going to be just introducing the idea. I suspect it will take a bit before he gets the hang of it. Try it, if it doesn't work just back off for a month or 6 weeks and try again. Repeat as necessary!!

Good luck!!

How long do you want to spend with potty training? My thoughts are, the younger you start, the longer you end up spending on potty training. I've trained 4 kids- 2 boys and 2 girls. I waited will they were close to 3 or a little more than three. Never spent more than a month or two on it. Friends whose kids were "training" at 18 months or two ended up trained the same age as mine. Some kids are able to train young, but I think that is the exception. Just my thoughts based on my experiences.
