Do you read used books?

Inspired by cuthie

I buy most of my books from yard sales and thrift sales because I'm cheap...and I like to do what I can to save the earth. Although I'm a germ freak, this doesn't seem to bother me.

Will you touch a used book, or do you have to have new? Fill us in about your phobias. LOL

I buy and read used books...depending on their condition...most folks who try to sell used books have them in decent condition.

All the time. I get them at GoodWill where they are 5 for 1.00 on sundays. I also bought a bible from them, a German bible from 1719 that is worth about 2500.00 so I will tolerate the germs!! HA

I read used books all the time. My family is pretty big into true crime so those books get passed around a lot (and we live quite a distance from them so we usually get a lot at once, when someone travels up there). They're often bought used to begin with. And I usually check half.com first when I find a book that sounds interesting! May end up being a new book but those "new book" store prices are so high!

I never buy myself new books, they are usually library books, garage sale, and our library has a paperback room you can fill a grocery bag for $1. I read between 2 and 5 novels a week, so the habit is expensive if you bought new. My DH usually buys me as a gift books I would want to keep, such as Stephen King, or classics, like Edgar Allen Poe.

I will read used books but generally buy them new because I've read everything the others I like have out already & don't have the patience to wait for it "Used". I like to check out yard sales and such for new authors at a cheap price. I found 3 first edition signed Dean Koontz hard backs once (and I only found them because I was in my *koontx* phase. Not worth a lot but I only paid $1 for all of them

I buy and read used books. I get them when our library sells them as well as a bookstore that sells used books.

Wow! That's amazing! Good for you.

That reminded me that a friend of mine found $100 bill tucked in a book she bought at a used book sale. You just never know what you're going to find!

Yes I do. I go to the library all the time. I also go to second hand bookstores. I do buy new also. If it's something I will read and/or use over and over, I keep it. If not I take it to the secondhand bookstore and sell it. I had a huge box of books that I posted on Garage Sale and Craig's List and received no response but I made $80 by selling most of them.

I hate when I get a library book and it smells like cigarette. I guess people who smoke don't consider that it might bother other people. It's horrible sometimes permeated into the pages.

I read used books all the time. The only books that I do not buy used are Dean Koontz books. I collect his books and I try my hardest to get first editions of those. I have some signed first editions that my husband bought me for holidays. I also have a more rare book of Dean Koontz's that is now worth about $1800-2000. Woohoo! I think that my husband found it for about $175 about 3 years ago. And that book would count as used since I was not the first owner.

of course.

I have a friend who won't read library books b/c of the "germs". But she had no answer when I asked her how many people had already touched the book from Barnes & Noble.

I read used books all the time... I get DVD's, books, etc. at the library. Those are definitely used!

My SIL will not read used books. She spends an absolute fortune on new books. She says that it is the germs and cigarette smoking that bother her. I've never noticed the smell of cigarette smoke on library books and the germs are probably dissipated by the time I get the books?

I'm happy to read that so many read used.

Heck, since I work at the library I read used books all the time.

Germs don't really seem to be a problem for me. I've worked there 2 1/2 years and only had to call in sick once.

Once in a while we get a cigarette smelling book. People have been charged when the book stinks. They clean them out with a powder that absorbs smells.

Also, if the book has a plastic covering, just use some squirt disinfectant and a paper towel. Most of the problem is gone.

Count me in as a used book lover. There are a couple of big used book sales here that I look forward to every year. Thats where I have gotten most of my kids books. There is something sad about the thought of a book going to waste. Maybe because my mother was a librarian I think of books as being something almost sacred. You respect books not throw them away.

Good one!!!! Can germs even still be in books? I would think they are a lot less 'germy' than shopping carts, etc.... And I read used books all the time too.

I could never afford my book habit. I have hundreds of used books. I have read as many as 5 a day. There is a place right now in Baltimore City called the book thing where you can go pick out and take as many books as you would like at no cost. I am going next week and donate about 400 books and bring home atleast 200 books. All the books at the good will and salvation army around here I have already read and donated there.
I have been reading used books since I first went to school over 50 years ago and our school books were all used.

So many good books are out of print that you'd miss a ton if you stuck with new books. I'm probably weird, but I like old cookbooks, and if a particular page is stained, I'll probably try that recipe first. If a recipe was used a lot, it's like it comes rated. I'll also use any suggestions that have been written on the pages.

I just went to the library tonight and checked out 11 books for me and 3 for hubbv. I love to read. Starting a "new" book is like starting a new adventure. When it's a library book I often wonder if others were surprised or excited as I am when I read the pages. I wonder if they spilled that coffee when the certain part happened and I wonder what kinds of people read the book before me.

Last year, I found one of those free standing, revolving book stands behind Dollar Tree. (Don't ask why I was driving aound behind the plaza!) I went inside and asked if it was garbage, and they said "yes, take it if you want it." I hauled it home and had enough paper backs stocked up to almost fill it. Sad to say, my supply is dwindling...but yard sale season is almost here!

I love used books - of course I love new books too Tee Hee - basically love all books. For years our library had a big book sale in October. Most of the books were donated, but there were also books the library was cleaning out to make room for newer books. This was a large event & it was hard to see what all was there.

2 or 3 years ago they opened up their own bookstore. It is great..the books are all filed in catagories, just like at the regular library. If you like a particular fiction author, just go the alphabetical section & look for his name. This has grown from one room into 2 large rooms. Our local Walden Books went out of business in the mall & donated all their shelving to the book store. This store is ran by volunteers from the Friends of the Library. This enterprise has brought in thousands of dollars, which is funneled back into buying new books for the 4 regular libraries located around town.

I buy books at tag sales, Goodwill, second-hand book stores, will take out of the library...no problem!

Here's my weird issue, though - I don't like to read a used book in bed. I don't want it touching my sheets and comforter! So when the books are used, they stay in the living room.

My usual fear is that someone sneezed while they were reading, and didn't cover their mouth or the book when they were reading. I'm sure that is not the typical case, but it's what I worry about, anyway.

I know - really pathetic!

Count me in on reading used books all the time too. Every great once in a while I will buy a new hardback book because it is something I want to keep for a long time. For some reason I love keeping cookbooks too, although I don't cook a lot. I'm also another paperbackswap.com person too. I wish the books flew off my "bookshelf" as much as I get books from there. I have gone to goodwill around this area, but our goodwill isn't that good for books unfortunately.

That's something I have thought of too when I get library books because I see what some of people at the library look like and some of their hygiene skills aren't too good. I NEVER lick my finger to turn the page of a used book. I am glad I am not the only one. I didn't want to be the first one to say it because after the hotel thread I am afraid people will think I walk around with Kleenex boxes on my feet and touch everything with paper towels like HH did LOL.

Oh I just hate to see people lick thier finger to turn a page.
I've noticed quite a few elderly people do that.

YES I read used books.
Actually the fumes of newly printed books can sometimes can make me dizzy (allergy to ink fumes)

I was regularly checking books out of the library when I moved out here.
Then I got a bill from a collection agency saying I owed $60.
FOR WHAT?
I called and they told me it was my Library that had turned me in as owing the $60.
HUH???
So I called the Library.
It seems they don't even bother to send overdue notices but simply turn people in to collection agencies.
Well I had news for them I NEVER failed to return any book on time.
So she looked me up and told me the name of the book.
I DID return it but the computer did not reflect that.
She said she would track down it's path and call me back.
She did. She discovered I had properly returned the book and she apoligized.
They would inform the Collection Agency it was a mistake.

THAT was the last time I ever used my Library card and I won't ever check out another book.

BUT I go to the Library all the time.
They have a Free paperback book exchange rack. The rule is bring some, take some.

I found so many of my favorite authors write in the the form of a series that I decided to gather all of a series before allowing myself to start the first one. That way I can read through a series in the proper order as they were written.

I happily spent last summer filling out my series for diff authors by going the the Free book exchange racks, Friends of the Library Book Sale rooms and the Goodwill.

Once I've read a book though, I generally donate it back to where I got it.
Shareing the wealth as others have shared with me.
Even given that I find I have a couple hundred unread books around all the time.
Some paperback and some hardback.
I'm reading my way through Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Deleware series right now.

How would one know if the book they had was wanted by collectors?
I'm not a collector and would not even know if I had an "expensive collector value" book.
I'm just a reader and I enjoy it.

No, I DON'T do the lick the finger thingy to turn pages but my elderly mother does.
I complained and she said she WAS tought to do that in school.
She's 80.
Some of my neighbors are also in their 80's and it seems they all do that.
I guess that's what was tought back in that era of schooling.
