My oldest is years away from college (she is 11), but I have to chime in - it has been an ongoing joke that whatever college she goes to, I will have to go with her, because she never brushes her own hair!!!

All 3 of mine wanted smaller schools. Two hated dorm life and chose to use the $ they would have spent on room and board and bought a car to get back and forth. The oldest had it down to 2 schools and the one with the best finacial package won. The middle want the best graphics school with out moving cross country. The youngest had visited 6 schools. The moment she stepped foot on campus, she knew that was her school.

dh picked UofA because it was close but not too close to his parents lol friend of mine , her youngest daughter picked UofF because family was there, then being the first time ever away from home she missed Mom SO much for the first year and now she's doing great. I dont think oldest will go unless he gets his act together. 9 year old probably will he's constatly on honor roll, except last report card he didnt realize he didnt make it til i showed him and he was so upset over it. I'm sure he'll make it next time. 5 year old not sure. 3 year old if he stays the same build he is now he'll probably be a football player somewhere, he's just a few inches shorter abut a thicker build than my 5 year old.

Im sooooo glad the college thing is mostly over for us we signed the papers 2 nights ago. My dd and we picked the college..... my dd liked the coach for the sport she is in, looks like a safe area although we never know, she is going in as undeclared because she doesnt know what she wants to do in life yet, they gave a excellent financial package to us, and the dorms are good too and I thought they just updated them with the blue light for emegencys, and maybe next year we will let her drive there but this year I dont feel the need for her to have a car she needs to do her sport and study. now on to the loans.......

My DD picked it because it is here in town, "not bad", and almost any college will do for the first 2 years anyway ![]() Here is a funny: One of DD's friends picked out her college by going on Google Earth and looking at several schools in the South - and picked the one that was the greenest. Well, she ended up in Mississippi and doesn't like it. She'l go to our local MTSU next semester. I thought that was so goofy! |

My children have all graduated from college. DD picked hers because she got the best offer for playing soccer. DS picked a college nearby he could drive to because a good friend a year before ended up with a roommate who was gay and had his friends over often. Other started assuming this boy was also gay and had quite a while to wait until rooms were changed and had some unpleasant experiences. My DS said he knew who was in our house and didn't want to share a room with anyone he wasn't 100% sure of. DS picked Ohio State over Ohio U because they had a better football team - yes, being in the education business I felt I had failed in my role to parent when I heard that. |

Update for us.....I guess I would say that the choosing started with the applicaiton process. Since DS was interested in engineering (civil - wouldn't have been my first choice, but it isn't my choice), he spent a lot of time researching the top engineering programs. He also looked at overall university rankings in the event that he didn't end up sticking with engineering. Created a big spreadsheet with all the data....(that's a clue that engineering is a good fit...LOL). He ended up applying to stretch, target, and safety schools for a total of 8. He did not get into 2 of his 3 stretch schools. He ended up choosing University of Illinois - Go Illini! - for its engineering program (civil is #2 in the country), liked the campus, its his mom's alma mater , and probably the deciding factor was that 2 of his buddies from HS are going there (Rather unusual given its 1200 miles away....but it is an outstanding engineering and comp sci school!). Other things that he thought about were athletics as a spectator (Michigan was attractive for that) , cost/value, and dining halls. He turned down UMichigan, UVA, RPI, Lehigh, and one other. Long story short, academics were #1 and overall comfort with campus and students #2. Anyone else have updates now that May 1st has come and gone? cj/

cjs...my Aunt (dad's sister) is a retired music professor at Univ of Illinois...she has a house on campus still, even though she is retired... My DS chose Penn State, because we have a local campus, so he can commute, they are huge, and terefore have much to offer, and the best reason of all....he got an academic scholarship, which is difficult to get in a state school. He even started a volleyball team at the local campus. He claims he stinks, but lots of kids showed up and were thanking him for taking the initiative to put together something that would be fun for him and others...they have jerseys and all now. Of course, his number is "1" |
