Earthquake!

Oh my gravy! I was awakened this morning at 5:37am, to my 10 year old running down the hall to our bedroom. I knew immediately it was an earthquake, we don't get them often but when we do, you know immediately. He was shaking, my other 2 sons were pretty calm.

It's one of those almost surreal things I guess. They are reporting it's a 5.4 on the Richter Scale.

Oh Catt, I had just woke up at 4:30(central time)and heard this really strange sound. I honestly thought someone was breaking in. Because I was half asleep, I thought my mind was playing games on me and maybe one of my kids fell out of bed. I checked but they were sound asleep. I continued hearing vibrations and started looking around the house. My photos on the wall were shaking, vibrating. I had no idea what it was until a few minutes ago. I had the news on before taking my girls to school and they were talking about the earthquake in Illinois that some felt right in this area. They never said what time it happened but that had to be what I heard/felt.
As you said, so surreal!

(((((HUGS)))) Hope the rest of your day is calmer and NO MORE EARTHQUAKES!

It was felt about 2 miles from my place but I didn't feel it. When I heard about it on the news that explained why my cat stopped talking to me about that time.

We had an earthquake in Texas a couple weeks ago. It was small I think 3.7 or something like that. Weird. I'm glad everyone is OK.

That was the first one I had ever felt. It was so odd. It woke DH and I both up. I sat straight up in the bed holding the bed. My mind wasn't wrapping around what was going on. DH thought it was a thunderstorm just from the sound it made. The bed just kept shaking, but yet it didn't knock anything over.

LOL!! Too weird, huh?? I was reading and I thought it was my cat scratching but realized he was asleep nesxt to me. He never even woke up. I told pets were supposed to warn their owners about quakes but he was unimpressed.

My DH was already at the lab and called to tell me he was watching the news at the time and watched it happen there.

My dog was barking, my windows shook and I didn't know what was going on, I thought it was storming and looked out and seen nothing but dry, I shrugged my shoulders and went back to bed.

I'm not sure if we felt it or not, maybe that's what woke us up, but DH and I were awake when we heard a big "creak" from somewhere in the house. We later heard another one but we never did find anything wrong! I guess we should go outside and check the house from there.

I hope your son is more calm. I imagine the first time in a quake is scary. I grew up in Southern CA and I can't remember the first one I went thru. I remember that I would routinely stay in bed thru them and usually thought "no big deal" until the big Northridge quake when I was 20. I laid there in the early AM and once things started falling off the wall and walls shock...I got outside. It was 6.7 or 6.8...can't remember exactly and we were about 50 miles away thank goodness

Let's hope that no more quakes happen in your area!

I was in the Whittier quake. Scariest thing I have ever experienced! That is a pretty strong quake, mattncatt, for your area.

Glad everyone is okay.

I was awake til after 5am so I'm sure if we felt it here, I slept through it. There are some people in the general Atlanta area saying they felt it though, and they're closer to where we lived when the one I felt a few years ago happened.

I live in NW ohio and heard the windows shake while eating breakfast this morning. i just thought it was thunder, until the news lady in indiana paniked a little when her chair was moving. then i knew it was something more than thunder.

We felt it in Iowa this morning. My teenage son and I were still up. I was trying to go to sleep and I thought I was having some kind of shaking fit but it kept going on and I then decided it wasn't me and talked to my son. He said his bed was shaking too! I got all excited. I called the local news channel and I was the second caller. Pretty excting!!!

I didn't feel anything here in Ohio but bf got off work early because of it.He said all the big companies had to quit early because there is a power shortage due to the earthquake and they don't have enough power to run everything.

tag1114, I am in Wilson County TN - fairly close to you I think - and my reaction was almost identical to yours! I was preparing to go to work around 4:30 and thought I heard high winds - felt the house shake - but looked out and no tree limbs swaying or guide wires moving. Truly felt like I was going crazy! Checked to see if I had the washer or any machine running - negative - but had to go into work so I forgot about it. Sometimes we forget the New Madrid fault may hit us with a big one someday!

I live in Clinton, IA and some people in town felt it, and others didn't. A lady I work with said it shook her bed, and her blinds!

A lot of people here felt it, but DH and I slept right through it. He heard that bricks were falling off of some buildings in Chicago.

Well I felt the second round yesterday and I have to say I wasn't asleep and didn't just shrug my shoulders I had a more dazed and confused look on my face and then realized why my body felt like my soul was going to trying to jump out of it to free itself I laughed when it was over though. It was different.
