Now I have an abused/lost dog story. What to do?

We went over to my son's apartment last night for his birthday and found he had a Female Pit Bull living with him.
Knowing that he is not to have dogs (he already received an eviction notice for having one and he got rid of it), I asked him where the dog came from. He said that some guys were beating it with a lead pipe, so they (he and his girlfriend) took it away.
The pit was very well mannered, and very sweet, but emaciated and had diarrhea. I noticed that she had a collar and a tag. The rabies tag was from Whitewater Wisconsin, which I was completely alarmed by. I told my son that someone must be missing this dog and so I took down the info and called the Vet listed this morning.
They had record of the dog. Her name is Peggy and she is only 15 mos old. I told her that the dog had puppies, obviously, because her teets were hanging down. What a shock to be so young and already bred. She gave me the name of the owner, and both phone numbers. I called the owner, got in touch with him, but he only speaks spanish! We could not communicate at all. I hung up, called back the vet, who then sent me to animal services of two different counties. Neither had spanish speaking associates. Then they directed me to the police department in Whitewater because they have a spanish speaking cop. They could not help, because of jurisdiction (only want someone to call that speaks spanish!! lol).
The animal services in one county that I talked to brought up a good point, that maybe she was sold for drugs or whatever. It does strike me as odd when I did talk to the owner and I tried to communicate, I said "como estas, Peggy?" What I meant to say is where is Peggy.. lol Not how is Peggy! He answered me Bueno!
Uh, your dog is gone.. why would he say she is fine?

Soooo, now I called the animal services here in my town, and they are going to call him (they have a spanish speaking employee).
They said they would let me know the outcome.

My fear is that they will go pick her up and if I remember right, they euthanize all pits instead of giving them for adoption.

I wish I could bring her home, but I have a blind Newfie that probably wouldn't appreciate a spry young thing bouncing all over him. Plus I don't have a fenced in yard.

Since my son had no food for her, I did go buy some food, so hopefully that will help her.

I am worried about her, but hopefully all will work out okay for her.

What would you do?

Go to AltaVista - Babel Fish Translation and you can translate what you want to say into spanish. Maybe this will help when communicating with the owner. Hope this helps. However, you might not understand what he is saying back. Hmmm...

How sad, I wish I lived near you, I would take her. I hope they don't give her back to the people you spoke to, it sounds like she's already had a hard life and just needs a family who will love her.

I would try to find a home for her without involving anyone in animal control. If they call you back, tell them you dont' have the dog (you don't, your son does).

Hopefully you can find her a home. I'm afraid if you let animal control have it, they will put her down or if they give her back to the owners -- well, she'll either end up dead or abused. Wonder what happened to her puppies?

Is there a no-kill animal shelter nearby? Give a call to a vet in your area and ask about a place to take her. I wouldn't give them much information, though, just enough to find out what you need to do.

Thanks for the links to the animal rescue.

A spanish speaking employee called the registered owner and he said he registers dogs for his brother, the dog is not his and he doesn't want it.

My guess is, she was used for fighting and probably didn't make the cut. Just a hunch though.

There are not any shelters close by us, and the one I did call in Rockford, IL (Noahs Ark) has too many dogs.

Animal services said they would take her, but not sure about the red tape involved since she is registered to this guy, but he says it is not his and they would need someone to reliquish rights to the dog in order for them to proceed.

This is so sad! She is such a sweet girl. I am just not sure what to do now, and not sure what my son has plans of doing with her, but I do know that if the landlord finds out, she will be on the streets again, or in the hands of someone that might not take care of her.

This poor dogs fate does not sound good.

Hi, I know EXACTLY how you feel , my prayers are with you and I hope you ( as well as me ) can both find GOOD solutions to this all too common problem.

Irresponsible pet owners are terrible :-(

I will post an update on MR. Doggie soon.

First I would like to thank you for at least trying to give this poor girl a chance. A lot of people would turn their head because it is a pit bull. I would definitely try to find a rescue, explain the situation and surrender the dog to them. I think this would be the best thing for her at this point granted she is not aggressive with other dogs.

It shouldn't be hard to find a home for a pit bull, but that's half of your problem. People who adopt potentially dangerous dogs often don't do it for the best reasons. I've heard about people having decent experiences placing pets on Craig's List, and it might be worth considering, but I'd contact a rescue first, to ask for advice. Even an out of state one should have some information on looking for a new owner.

That is a great idea. Thanks.

ohhgodd,

What's happening with this situation? I would love to take her (and I know we are close enough I could do it), but like you, I have a dog now that I don't think would adapt to the situation too well. And even though I don't believe that pit bulls are born aggressive (we have a friend that owns them and they are very sweet), I know a lot of people are just plain scared of them. I don't think a pit bull would go over very well in my neighborhood with a lot of young children.

I'd really like to know if you've found a solution to this. I'm hoping for the best possible outcome for this poor little girl!

Linda,
I haven't talked to my son since Sunday, so he doesn't know the outcome of what happened. I plan on stopping over there this weekend to let him know what happened and see what his plans are.

I will keep you posted. I keep trying not to think of her, because it just breaks my heart You are so sweet!!

Speaking of Dekalb, I will be there tomorrow working at the good ol Wally world!
