We bought our pop up!!

Thanks for all the advice on pop up campers. DH and I looked tonight and we pick up our new camper on Wednesday.

We struggled a bit because, we were not wanting to take on another payment, but I think it will be so worth it in the long run!!

I am very excited!!
Now, to figure out when we can go camping

They had a couple used ones in, but I did not feel they were selling them cheap enough, considering you do not get a warranty with those. We bought a 2008 yearling palamino.

Thats awesome! Congrats on your new camper. DH and I are looking for a trailer camper to pull behind our truck. We are really looking forward to going camping this summer.

I know exactly what you mean about taking on another payment, but I think a camper is well worth the investment. We are going to refinance our house and use that extra savings to put toward the camper. Plus we are paying off our two measly credit cards and will be done with them!

Keep us posted on how you like the pop up camper...

Congrats on the new camper!

You are so right about that. We normally camp with a few other families, but this past weekend it was just us and we had a BLAST! We decided that we need to camp just us a few times a year. Unfortunately, neither kid was able to get a turkey, but we went on hikes, played cards, acted silly together and just had a blast!

Congrats!!

Now you need to celebrate by inviting a friend camping with you. Just make sure it a friend you have known for like 20 years or so. (he he he...that is me)

Hey, where did you end up getting it? I just realized you were in Indy, too. We got ours at Fun Time Campers on Pendleton Pike. We bought it during the Boat, Sport and Travel Show in February, though.

I had been reading the original post about pop-ups and I've got to say...MAN they have improved! When I was a kid, many moons ago, a friend had a pop-up and it only had a little sink and some storage in the middle - no table, fridge, and certainly not toilet. These have come a long way.

Congrats or your new purchase!

Congrats! My girls love our travel trailer, they call it our house on wheels. With getting a permanent site this year at the Vikings, I know we'll be camping every weekend. Can't wait to see pics!

Where do you stay when you come to Indy? Do you have family here? I guess since I live here I'm wondering why it is your favorite city! HAHA!

Sometimes it is nice to hear someone elses perspective to help you appreciate where you live more.

We always stay downtown when we come in. My Fav hotel is the Hilton on Market, but lately we've stayed at the Marriott, Sheraton or Crowne Plaza (kind of go whereever priceline sends us..LOL)

What DON'T I love about Indy? I even love the outkirts. Take the 465 all the way around, I love it all (except for the traffic and people that like to play bumper cars!) I also don't like the bad parts of Indy..that's scary.

But there are many things that make it a charming, wonderful place:

The canal-It's my prozac! The most beautiful part of downtown.
The Southern Hospitality-everyone is SO NICE
Always something going on in Indy, no matter when you go, or what weekend you go
Nikki Blaines
The museums
The racetrack (we are not even race fans, but we loved the museum and the excitement at race time is unparalleled!)
How clean downtown is.. it is absolutely amazing
They keep the bums in check, not too many are out.
Reminds me of a little chicago, but safer and cleaner. I feel totally safe there.
The outskirts, I love the way the towns are all circled around Indy, you can get anywhere so quickly. When you do get to these towns (Carmel, Zionsville, the area of Pendleton Pike, or any other city South even) What you find is a thriving economy with many small businesses that are completely unique. We LOVE the Colts Bar, Blue Crew, in Carmel.

There is always big city action, in a small city. All over, everywhere you go.. so much going on. WE LOVE IT!

Oh and did I mention the Colts play there? Should have been my number 1 right there.

They just finished cleaning up the canal not long ago-looks so much better without all the nasty algae and yuck in there. I used to go down there and walk by myself at all hours of the day and night. I wouldn't dream of going down there at night by myself now.

McCarty, we hijacked your thread!

Nice to hear they cleaned it up! It still was nice, either way.

I used to walk down there at all hours of the night, until someone said it was dangerous. I was like What? I mean, I would be down there at 2-4am walking....I would stay at the Residence Inn on the Canal when I was on business, and some nights I just needed the serenity of the canal.

I still don't hesitate to walk down there at night, but usually just with my husband now. I still don't see how it is dangerous. I guess I just have never come across anything that made me afraid.
Damn tourists..LOL

Sorry, I could not reply until now, I was at work.

We actually pick it up tommorrow night. I will post pictures after that.

It has a full bed and a queen bed on the beds that pop out, then it has a table with 2 bench seats that makes a bed and also a couch that makes a bed, so it sleeps 8. It has a stove and sink and refrigerator and my favorite heat and air!

It also has one of those fans that pull the hot air out.

We decided not to go the bathroom route, because of weight and honestly, I am not so sure in that amount of space I want everyone doing their business LOL!!!!

We bought it in Greenfield at Mount comfort RV.

We did look at some light weight trailors as well as the pop ups, But I liked the idea that this would fit in the garage and also, we price was better.
You can see pictures if you search under Palamino, yearling its the 4102 model( I think thats it anyway)

This is about the same one I have been pricing on the net.But I do want the shower/ Bathroom LOL. I'm not a huge fan of walking at night to the washhouse ( Think snakes, Spiders Creppy things lol )I have seen them priced from as low as 2999.00 to over 15,000 !( Sorry but for 15,000 I want a travel trailer lol ).

I keep going back and forth with a Huge tent to the Pop- Up camper,

This is a picture of the tent I really like.I LOVE the fact all 3 rooms are side by side. I can put the boys on side. the girls on the other and dh and I in the middle. The open room os Huge !!

Vanguard 6 Person Family Camping Canvas Frame Tent NEW: vanguard The Camping Equipment Company

I have also been "spying" this tent as well, I like the Multi room add ons and told DH we could even use the extra room for a potty room /changing room.

Nexus 16 Person Family Camping Tent Extra Large Rooms NEW: nexus tent+poles The Camping Equipment Company

But would much rather have a pop-up or travel trailer LOL.. again have a wonderful time camping you are going to have so much FUN !!

THanks
Yes it is a yearling model.

As far as the bathroom, the place we normally go and tent camp, has a bathroom in a brick building that is very well lit up, so I am ok with walking there. I do stop drinking late though! LOL So hopefully I wont have to walk there too many times during the night.

Personally, I like the idea of sleeping up off the ground, In the tent we used to use, I hated sleeping on the ground and we take our dog, so I was always worried about the dog popping the air mattress when we used it.

Those tents look really nice, I just think the spoiled part of me is done with the ground and no air conditioning.

I just need to figure out when we can take it out now!!!

With soccer season upon us, it may have to wait until June...Bummer.

Correct me if I am wrong but I always heard to go for one with a bathroom no matter how small so you could write it off as a second home. Have the rules changed?

Don't some fold down units have a portable toilet in an area to be used at nights.

I haven't looked at any of the units for years but they used to have one?

Are you kiddin ? You can claim a pop- up camper as a 2nd home ? I didn't know this I always thought a 2nd home had to be lived in 6 months out of the year ?

Wonder how that works ?

If you check out the RV.net forum I posted, there are many people that actually live in motorhomes, and have discussions on what you can and cannot write off as a second home. I dont think you can with any type of trailer.

Also, OP, keep the packing to a minimum...Try t o find items that have more than one use.
we have a steamer pot (I got mine at Kmart, it was about $20), you can use the pot, use the steamer pot and use the insert as a colander to save space. Also, get some good hot dog forks and a pie iron (again, the RV.Net Open Roads Forum website will give you tons of ceasy recipes). the good folks over there will answer any questions you have. Also, try to do most of your cooking outside to avoid a having to clean up. We use reynolds release, put on a tortilla, fill, flip in half and seal and make tacos on the grid we place over the fire . We dont even take a grill anymore, just charcoal and a grid.

The RV.net people also have lists of things to take, and they all recommend camp driveway for the first time, and take a notebook and write what you are lacking. You may want a hassock type portable toilet just for tinkles at night...they are easy to dump in the morning. (and about $20 at WM)

good luck, we are going out again this weekend to another PA state park. DH is working 12 hours 7 days a week now, so I did the towing, set up , parking , dump, bring home, park again etc with our 29 fot trailer. its a bit crooked in the driveway, but I did it!! My three boys caught about 70 fish (mostly panfish but some nice trout too)
I also take the kids razor scooters (they wear helmets and orange vests for safety)...easier to pack than bicycles

Wow thats great you were able to do all that yourself. I don't know about me towing by myself!
The salesman said you could write it off if you have a bathroom. Obviously he could be wrong, but he said it.

Great idea on the steamer pan.

Do you make the eggs in a baggie ? Is there a baggie that works best? I was thinking of practicing that at home before we try it out. It sounds like a great and easy idea though

You have to use freezer bags. I use quart size, but it sounds as some use different sizes on here.

I don't buy the zipper kind (with the zipper you pull across) but rather the kind you snap close (you know, "yellow and blue make green" lol) so I can see it is sealed all of the way. Having water get in the eggs is blah. LOL Also, have each person write their name on the bag with a permanent black marker (Sharpie). It's funny, cause with kids they fidn this to be a way of "owning" their creation! Also, a neat way to add bacon to your eggs, without having the bacon mess (of cooking) are the hormel jars of bacon pieces you can buy in the salad dressing aisle. I have come to love this product!

I agree, make a camping list. Make sure you outfit your camper with everyrthing you might need ahead of time.
I made a camping recipe list as well, and I have saved the same sheets (that I have added to) for the last ten years! I just cross out the ones I didn't like and keep th e ones that we all did like. That stays in the camper at all times, as well.

Oh if you plan on doing any crock pot cooking, try this recipe. It is another one of our favs! Google: Marilyns Sensational One Pot Sierra Stew

Absolutely delish!

Good luck! Have fun

Practice setting up your camper a few times at home-from start to finish. Do everything as if you are at the campground to make sure you are comfortable doing it. That helped us quite a bit. When we camped the first time, we were so excited to get set up that it was nice to have had that practice!

We brought home the camper tonight and set it up in the side yard. They had washed it down at the dealer and he said it would be good to let it get good and dry.
We got it all set up and had us and a couple neighbor kids in there taking pictures etc.. We were all on the same side and all of a sudden it tipped about 45 degrees...scared us half to death. Dh forgot the jack stands....opps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All is well now.
The kids and I are going to camp in the side yard tommorrow night, since they dont have school Friday.
