I've been in the PTO for 9 years. I started out volunterring for way too much and got overwhelmed. One thing is for sure, you have to learn to say no and stick to it. PTA/PTO is like anything else - there's only a few people who do all the work and once they find out your willing, they will hit you up. I volunteer for the things I want or am interested in, but nothing else. They've pushed for the last 3 years for me to be on the board, but I've stuck to NO. I'm very involved, but am just as involved as I want to be. I love being involved in my girls schools. I love knowing what's going on and having a say in a lot of it. Plus my girls know how important I think school is. Lisa

Good question. I am on the MOMS Club board (but won't be as of July, I will still be active, just not on the board) and the parent board of the nursery school. Since my son is going into K this year I thought I would look into the PTA...but with four kids and other committments I don't want to get tied into too much. |

I was the President, Vice President and Secretary for the PTA. I also was overwhelmed with things. It seems that there is a group of people that LOVE suggesting ideas, things to do, etc but that group of people does not want to help with the actual activity, then you have the ones that volunteer and it seems to fall on them all the time. They get sick of it and just quit. I'm one of those people. I gave and gave until there just wasn't anymore to give. I have been a member of the PTA but haven't gone to a meeting in over 3 years, probably for fear that they will talk me into something that I just don't want to do anymore. But I think I need to start going to the meetings again, at least show my support.
