How much is minimum wage where you live??

I am still shocked that the Federal minimum wage is $5.85 (effective 7-24) With the price of everything rising how does the government expect those families to be able to support themselves? I don't know about the rest of you, but the $936 they would make working 40 hours for 4 weeks doesn't even cover my house payment for the month.

I live in DE and our state min wage is $7.15....now $7.15 is still not a lot of money , but thats $1.30 more then the Fed Min wage which averages out $52 a week for a 40 hr week.

What really gets me is that companies will raises their prices to make sure the company doesn't lose any money, but doesn't raise their prices to pay their employees more.

I think it's the federal minimum wage here in GA but seems like everywhere we've lived I've seen signs for fast food places advertising much more. Here's an interesting Wal Mart page I found not too long ago:

The average wage for full time hourly associates at Wal-Mart in Georgia is $10.95 per hour.

I believe ours is what the federal minimum is here in Idaho, so I guess it will soon be 5.85. However, having said that, the Minimum wage isn't SUPPOSED to support a family. That is the wage for people barely starting out working, mostly teenagers should be the ones expecting this kind of income. People with at least a high school education should be getting paid more. My mother in law didn't even make it to 9th grade before she was put to work like all her brothers and sisters, but she's been working for years and doesn't make minimum wage. She makes enough to house herself, and have 2 vehicles (1-2 years new).

In Oklahoma it's $5.85 for non-tipped employees and $2.00 an hour if you receive tips.

Unfortunately there are tons of families out their that are only making minimum wage, who have a high school diploma or equivalent. I'm glad your MIL makes a wage that can support her, but thats not always the case. With inflation on a rampage, I believe the federal government should raise the min wage, because a lot of employers won't!

No one should overlook the word average in the quote when seeing the dollar amount. Average means 1/2 are below and 1/2 are above typically. When I first read it I almost choked that it is $10.95 until I really read it..........this is only an average, not a prevailing Walmart wage.

I am not convinced raising it is a good idea. States just need to deal with it on a case-by-case basis, as the economic conditions in one area are likely to be very different from those in another. To force, on a national scale, businesses in areas where houses are inexpensive to pay minimum wage workers a rate that would provide housing in California would burden those businesses unnecessarily.

The national minimum really should reflect the minimum in whatever area of the country has the lowest cost of living, and let individual states with higher costs of living deal with their own particular issues.

Here in OR is's $7.05 an hour. And that is what people get paid whether you are a teenager just starting out or a 50 yr old person who has worked for 35 yrs and keeps getting outsourced. It's disgusting. Who the heck can live on $8 an hour?

NOTE: A state cannot reduce the requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Most states have adopted minimums, although many simply track the FLSA. Others are broader, for example, covering workers not covered under the FLSA or setting higher minimums than the federal rate. Some states set a state minimum lower than the federal rate. In that case, all workers in the state who are covered by the FLSA must receive the federal minimum. When state laws require a higher wage, employers must pay at least that higher rate to all workers covered by the state law, whether or not they also are covered by the federal law. Some minimum wage rates in this table apply only to large companies or employers with a certain dollar amount of receipts. Smaller companies may either have to pay a different minimum wage (which is not listed here) or there may be no minimum wage requirement at all.

Incorrect; the middle value is the median, not the average. Average is the number regarded as typical of a group of numbers, mathematically it is obtained by adding each member of the group and dividing the total by the number of members.

P.S. Minimum wage is $2.65 in Kansas - wow!

Actually, she's right.

Say your child scored 100, 100, 100, and 90 on four tests at school.

The average would be 92.5.

Only one of the scores is below the average, and three are above it.
