"Please Do Not Disturb"

My husband works graveyard and has for most of the last 20 yrs. We have a sign on our front door that says "Please Do Not Disturb 9am-5 pm Thank You" so people don't knock unless we are specifically expecting them. Once a man selling meat from the back of a truck waited until exactly 5:01 to knock and I bit his head off LOL.

On Saturday I was waiting for a FedEx from work that I would have to sign for so I removed the sign. I could not believe how many people knocked on my door! Jehovah's Witnesses, salespeople. And I live in the country 12 miles from town on one side and 40 miles on the other so what the???

I think if he ever works regular hours I will leave that sign right where it is!!!

Am I the only one whose door they knock on or this something that goes on routinely?

I live in the country and don't get a lot of knocks on my door. I do get Jehovah's Witnesses from time to time and if you ever take any of their literature or listen to their message, they will be back! Other than that I don't get too many unexpected knocks on my door.

we've lived here for a year and no door to door people, where we lived before it was a new subdivision and there was kid fundraisers to witness people almost every week. I put a "Cation my dog bites" on the door and wouldnt open it. Not that she bites she'd rather just lick you to death

Nobody ever comes to my door, except expected friends and deliveries. Oh, wait a minute, one of those book sellers came by last summer.

You might consider a "No Solicitation or Sales" sign.

I put a "No Solicitation - except neighborhood kids" sign on my door. I don't want exterminators, cable, magazines or alarm system people trying to sell me stuff. But, I'll buy from the kids (from my neighborhood only) every time. You'd be suprised how many door-to-door sales adults ignore the sign and then get mad when I tell them I'm not interested or how many vans of kids from elsewhere are dumped off to sell stuff.

We get Jehova witnesses at our door once a year. The only other time anyone knocks on our door is at election time.Since we live on the corner of a busy intersection everyone wants to put their "Vote for me" signs in our yard.Bf usually lets them but I feel like its false advertising since we never vote and don't even know the politicians who stick their signs in our yards.Poor bf has to move the signs every time he mows the yard.We never get salesman at our doors though, not even girlscouts selling cookies, lol.

I was at a elderly ladies home a few weeks ago and the Jehova witnesses's was bugging her to death trying to get in when I got there. She is 89 and lives alone and she was on her back porch putting her trash in the can when they pulled up. she was trying to be nice to them, telling them she was not interested and to have a good day and they were just flat our rude to her. Thats when I got rude to them. I informed them that they needed to leave and leave now and not to ever return there again as she was not interested and if they did return, I would contact the police about them harrassing the elderly. We went in the house and shut the door. I waited about 5-10 min and went and looked out the window and they were sitting in the drive way. I went back out there and ask them why they had not left and one of the ladies said they were busy praying for lost souls. I ask them to take their praying somewhere else and to get off her property. They finally left.
My client said they had been showing up there about ever 2 days and would not leave and she was just sitting on her porch with them until they left. She was afraid if they go inside, she wouldnt get them to leave. She has a alarm and said she would be turning it on when I left.
I dont understand why they are sooooooo pushy. No is NO .

I usually just stand there with the door open and let them blabber for 5 minutes, smile and nod at them, then usually they hand me a pamphlet, thank me for my time, and are on their way.

we get lots of kids selling stuff. I buy from a couple of them but I don't really need the crap they sell and I only buy from the kids I like. I don't allow our kids to do door to door fundraising. Our school actually doesn't allow it (we go to a different school than the neighborhood kids). I'll get Jehova Witnesses from time to time. I tell them we are Atheist and they say "appreciate your time" and hand us a booklet "if we change our minds". I used to try to be nice and nod but that only made them talk longer. Now I cut them off first thing. We've also had some Morman's stop by and unlike the JW's, they want to talk you out of being Atheist. We have Morman friends (good friends in fact) and I'll say "I'd rather discuss the issue with our friends who are Morman" and they seem happy with that. Luckily, the religious stopovers are only 1-2 times a year. We've had the meat truck guy and I cut him off and ask him for paperwork from the city stating his truck is of the upmost cleanliness standards and they turn around and leave LOL We get a few others on occassion but I work at home and most come during the day. I have a part glass front door and I can see if its someone I want to see. If I don't, I don't answer the door. The hard part is if the door is opened to the screen and they see me (which is the only reason I had responses listed above LOL)

I guess we're pretty lucky because we don't get many people who knock on our door except maybe neighborhood kids who are selling something from school. When we first moved in ten years ago we got alot more than we do now...people peddling magazines and Jehovah Witnesses. I would tell them I'm Catholic and that would make them leave right away...Someone told me that they think Catholics are doomed to hell...Oh well!...We don't have any No Solicitation signs at our neighborhood entrance either... ~Lisa

my grandmom was a jehovah witness. she said that if anyone ever tells them to take them off their route list, they have to and not come back. It works. At least in El Paso it did.

I have a "no solicitation" sign on my front door/window and as far as I can tell, it keeps only those ethical salespeople away. Still get those magazine, newpaper, alarm company, meat truck, etc. people who ignore the sign anyway.

I do have both JW and Mormon people come to my door. I always tell them that I have my own bible study class but that I will be glad to take their literature to read. They have never been rude about that approach. I understand that these religious calls are made by true believers and that this is part of their religion, so, as long as they accept my thanks and allow me to just accept their literature without them trying to pester me further, I try to respect their call. I even read their literature about 50% of the time, just to see what it is all about.

check your city/county ordinances---

In our city anyone going door to door has to have a permit issued through the city. If they do not have a permit they can be cited and/or escorted out of town.

I don't have issue w/ neighborhood children selling--they are usually legitimately trying to raise money. Of course, since we have our own children, we don't usually get hit up by the neighborhood kids.

We've lived here for almost 5 years and I have yet to see a Jehovah's Witness come to my door. Have had the LDS a couple of times, but they are usually pretty good to take no for an answer and move on.

Now, the siding salesmen, cleaning products salesmen, etc. the first thing I ask to see is their permit to sell in our city. If they can't produce it, I politely tell them that they have to have one and if they continue going door to door I will call the non-emergency dispatch number and have an officer escort them out of my neighborhood. If they do have one, I tell them that I'm not interested and shut the door in their face. No, it may not be polite, but it is effedtive.

Today I changed the sign to read

"Please Do Not Disturb 9 am-5 pm
Thank You
If you are selling something for the (name of my small town) schools or for your club please come back after 5 pm and I will buy something.

WARNING:
This applies only to children and teenagers I am not interested in meat from the back of your truck, hearing about your religion, or buying anything from anyone that is not from (this small town).
Don't even bother knocking if you are not a local student or resident it's a waste of both of our time."

Only it's in a lot bigger letters and in bold black print and in a plastic protector page.
I hope the kids come back I don't mind buying their crap because it's for the schools. But I always just tell the Witnesses "I am not interested" and just close the door, not slam just close.

It seems that the JW's in both of the small towns that we have lived in will leave if we tell them that we already have a church affiliation.

Me opening the door naked would be enough to make Satan repent! Or an angel committ a sin!

I live in the mountains. I get the JW usually twice a year. A lot of people asking if I would like for them to do yardwork or buy something. Once a year as well I have people collecting for a local firedept by selling portraits.

I work from home and have quite a few people come to my door during the day - I simply don't answer it. I didn't ask for them to come and they weren't invited. It may be rude, but these days my safety is more important to me!

Since I live in an apartment complex, we seem to be fair game for any and all types of solicitors, even though there is a "No Solicitation" sign on the office door. Of course, many of these solictors don't go anywhere near the office, and often come after office hours anyway. After trying, and failing, to rebuff their attempts (most don't take a kindly, "no, thank you" as a suitable reply), I affixed a "No Solicitation" sign to my door. Still, the church groups would descend upon me, and try to "save my soul." (Apparently, they don't see "selling" their religion as solicitation). Again, polite responses didn't work, and I hated how I would have to get stern with them to get them to go away. I found myself frustrated that I would have to ruin whatever good mood I was in just to get some peace from them.

Finally I had a sign made that says "No Religious Zealots".

I've yet to have any unwanted knocks on my door!

If we get them during the day, we don't notice, because we're usually asleep too. We do have a lot of pamphlets left on/taped to the door, which I hate. I'm not sure the HOA would approve of a 'Don't Leave Your S*** Here' sign, though. At one point, when a dentist near the grocery store left a couple dozen ads there, we dropped them off at their office when we were next in the area.

DH tends to have fun with anyone he answers the door to. We had someone from 'EPA' (standing for I forget what), who left very quickly when he asked if they were trying to impersonate a federal agency.

put a "Cation my dog bites" on the door and wouldnt open it. Not that she bites she'd rather just lick you to death

Hi - long time reader, rarely post here, but I had to jump in when I read this. Before I was married, I worked in an insurance office and wanted to warn you that this sign could set you up for a major lawsuit -

Even your dog has never bitten anyone, in the eyes of the insurance industry it is like an admission that your dog will bite. The Beware of Dogs signs were also red flags. You would be much better off with a "No solicitors" type sign rather than anything warning of a dog that might bite.

As far as JW's - my grandmother is also practicing. I usually tell them that I get all the literature from her lol. I haven't had a JW at more door in a couple of years now.

We live out in the country (very rural) but I am amazed at how our house seems to draw people to it -- everything from asking directions to selling something or asking if we want to sell something (i.e., timber, antique outdoor furniture that's out in our yard). I even had a lady come to my door once asking for a sandwich. I don't even know where she came from. I've had people follow me down the driveway in my car to ask directions when I get out of the car. It's like our house has a big sign on it that says "Stop Here!" I always keep my doors locked and if I keep my wooden door open with just the glass outside door closed but locked, I have even more people stop. It's not like we live right on the road. We have a winding driveway but you can see the house from the road.

Maybe some houses look 'friendlier' than others???

Good idea about the sign, OP! Maybe I should try that.

I agree with you...well said. There are so many nut jobs out there today that it's just not safe to answer the door if you don't know who is there. ~Lisa

Sounds like our house in the past. Lately we haven't gotten too much activity but for a while we got everyone. If a wreck happened, even if it wasn't near our driveway, they managed to pull into our driveway. At 3:00 one Sunday morning we got the naked lady ringing our doorbell. Got a flat tire? Pull into MY driveway to fix it. Need to pull over and argue with your girlfriend? Use my driveway! More than once I've come home and been unable to pull into my own driveway because a car was sitting there for one strange reason or another.
But I don't get many knocks on my door.

Last year there was some raging lunatic pounding on my door shouting at me to open it.He was of the african race and it scared the he!! out of me! I think he must have been a crack dealer or something the way he was screaming and had the wrong address.I was going to call the police if he started breaking down the door, but I figured by then it would be too late,so I just stood there like a frozen rabbit peeking out a tiny egde in my curtains. He finally left .Thank god hes never been back but I was very parenoid alone in the house for a long time after that.

ITA what seeuinadrm said - I normally do not answer the door when a stranger knocks, I did not invite them, they are not welcome. I don't care if the blinds are open and they are waving at me through the window, I will ignore them and will not open the door. Possibly I might crack an upstairs window and call out to them- no thanks, have a nice day! and then close it. I never buy anything from strangers at the door, it just encourages them!

but yeah I will answer the door to neighbors even if it's neighbor kids selling junk I don't want, LOL

It's not safe to open the door to a stranger....nor is it safe to just ignore someone knocking on your door. They very well could be testing to see if anyone is home. And by ignoring them, you give the impression the house is unoccupied and then they may break in.

Answering the door, does not mean OPENING it.

Generally, rape is a crime of the moment. There are fewer home invasion rapes than home invasion robberies.

And, if you answer the door (without opening it) they don't know whether you are home alone or not!
Unless you answer with "Who is it? I am a woman home alone, please don't rape me..."

Ignoring the knocks on the door is not a good thing! At least that is what every police officer I have ever known has said.
